The Coffee Pot

it is very funny how some of precieve coffee county football and seem to know everything about bill price and his coaching staff. coach price has done an excellent job at coffee county. going on his 3rd year at coffee county he has won 14 games and has lost 4 games by 2 points or less. 2 of those losses have come to tullahoma by 3 points total. he has also beatin every team in the region except for lincoln co. Also, how can anyone say that coach price has problems with other region coaches. it just happens that he is very good friends with all the coaches and if anyone would like they can ask any of the coaches and see what they have to say!! Now knowing that all this fire is coming from someone in the tullahoma area, the score at halftime was 14-3. tell me where tullahoma dominated the first half. 6 of tullahoma's points came off a punt return that was brought to coffee co. 7 yard line and then a punt that was kicked off another coffee county player that put the ball inside the coffee county 20. where is the domination at? tullahoma had the one drive at the end. if im not mistaken just like tullahoma coffee county fumbled on the goal line which would have made the score 21-3.

anyone having to say something about coach price's coaching im sure he would love to hear from you and not off a board with a hidden name. coffee county use to be everyone's homecoming game, thats not the case anymore. they are a contender year in and year out. not to mention they lost to the region champs last year by one point. Also coach price has open many doors for his coaches at coffee county that have a toatal of 6 years experience between 5 coaches. he consistantly has the leading rusher in the mid-state and as of today william le hawkins is the second leading rusher in the state. coffee county has one of the most disciplined teams in the state in which coach demands alot from his coaches and players. if anyone from a neutral school says anything about coffee county they will tell you that they are physical and in your face and the offense is always high tempo from getting the play in to the huddle and running it. by the way coffee co. has gone for it on 4th down 21x and has converted 18x. also 2x they did not get it were off of a fake punt and on all 3 tries that failed no points were scored by the opposing team.

It's easy to blame and bash a program for it's faults. However, over the years, Coffee County has had the same problems. It does not matter who coaches their program. The problems still seem to persist. Whenever a program the size of Coffee's stays in the perennial cellar, everyone insists there is something wrong which is a total logical assumption. Naturally, the coach is on the hot seat and then, like clock work, the personal assassinations begin assuring everyone that the coach is corrupt or has major problems that's costing the program it's wins. The cycle of finger pointing and personal attacks is an indicator to the real problems at Coffee.

Location has a lot to do with their problems. It's basically a rural town suffering an identity crisis and with that comes many battles and distractions. Coffee suffers from a constant internal strife of wanting to be a major city and program in heated competition with it's sister city of Tullahoma. Most outsiders and many insiders view Tullahoma as the City and Manchester as the township. This has been one of the worst distractions for this community. They want to slay the proverbial dragon (Tullahoma) which is a healthy choice but it has been taken to a level that is both unhealthy and unfair to the locals of both towns. The louder the angst and name calling that goes on during their "Coffee Pot" game, the more it feeds the fire of what people perceive of both programs and their home towns.

Rivalries can be healthy for programs to build character and focus for it's players and people of the community. The rivalry between Manchester and Tullahoma has been nothing but ammunition to take it to the next level going from chants and cheers to name calling and fighting. To see this problem go on for so many years and nothing being done to rectify it means only one thing. It starts at the top. School boards need to take a more pro-active roll in demonstrating leadership that is healthy for all in their communities. Ending a long tradition of the Coffee Pot may seem ridiculous to those involved but at what price? Will it take someone getting beat within an inch of their life or killed to bring it to a close? If you look at it rationally, 95% of the press is usually negative about this game before it starts and after. Yes, even when they try to be positive in the papers and radio, it still smarts with just how important this game is to them and that's just the local sportswriters and broadcasters. Manchester's 5A program is supposed to beat a Tullahoma 4A program. Manchester expects nothing less. What people don't realize is it's apple and oranges in comparison. From the Pee Wee leagues through high school, Tullahoma has had a longer tradition of working together and helping their high school program win at every level. Manchester has just recently figured this out but it takes years and maybe decades to have it fully functional. WestWood Jr. High operated on it's own accord and relished the thought of being different than their local High School. That in itself spells disaster when trying to mesh the programs. Coffee Middle has had some very good coaches but there is only so much you can do coming from one school.

Bill Price has done some good things for this program just like all the coaches before him. He, like the previous, has been brought in to rectify perceived problems that no coach can correct when it starts from the top. There are some things that coaches can't control and until everyone realizes that, it will not get any better. Bill was brought in under unusually high circumstances of expectation. He brought in a staff and top running back to boot which equated to a very quick bandaid fix fulfilling everyone's justification of righteousness in their decision to make a coaching change. Yet, in time, the problems are still there only to rear their heads after every loss and as in previous years, he will be scuttled for a newer and even more nieve coach willing to put everything on the line for this community unless the community wakes up and calls for change from their school board.

Manchester has everthing needed to be a great community and program. It is full of loving and great people. They care deeply about their community and want what's best for it just like any other. It starts with the leaders. Leaders need to lead for the good of the whole community. Rivalries and finger pointing are distractions to the ultimate goal. Let's stop the finger pointing for once at the coaches and see what we can do as a community to understand these problems and fix what we can. Undo pressure with unrealistic goals can make anyone coaching fold under. Let's learn from the past mistakes and make things better for our kids and grandkids.

Manchester is a good community. I am sure after years of being a doormat they would like to compete on a regular basis and I wish them the best. From your post it is obvious that you know what needs to changed more than I.

Let's put wins and losses aside. Price will not take you to the promised land. I know that friction is abound in the CC program and it is not from one source. Is it enough to make the CC program go backwards? Time will tell. If there is one element that is needed to turn a program around, it is character. Without it, you will have more negatives than positives. That element is not a part of your varsity program's leadership.

Thanks for the good assessment of the CC program. Your points are well taken. I'm thru with this subject, I'm moving on. Good luck to the players and supporters of the CC football team.

bla bla bla again i ask how many of you have coached 5A football, or football again, how many games have you won? Bill Price is a good coach he has proved it by doing in one year what so many others failed at, taking the Raiders from possibly the worst team in the state to going to the play-offs having a winning season so unless you are Jerry Josslin, Phil Fulmer, or Jim Mora give it a rest

Hey you folks.....get behind your program and your coaches. All this bad-mouthing accomplishes nothing but to spread discontent among the players. When will you realize that YOU are the problem in CC? This coach has done well. Look at Bradley Central where he left before coming to CC....they haven't won a game in like 2 yrs and are in contention for the longest losing streak in the state. When he was there, they were contenders. He has proven that he can coach, so let the man do his job without you tearing dwon what he has accomplished.

  • 2 weeks later...

:thumb: Coach Price is a good coach " For the older days " but with football going how it is he needs to learn to throw it and that Jake Nunly isnt there

yeah put gonzales at TE let catch some passes knockout a couple of LB'S but price doesn't have the guts to do it like fitzgerald did at pearl-cohn with john henderson
