I would also like to thank Brentwood Coach Barbara Campbell and all the Brentwood parents for another excellent tournament. The parents kept the central scoreboard updated very well and the food was great. It was a great way to spend the weekend watching some of the best teams in the state have at it. Good luck to all these teams the rest of the season and I bet we'll see most of them at the State Tournament.

I've had to edit this thing about 5 times as my errors are really bad tonight.

Good night.

Another positive thing about the BIVT was their program showing the team rosters, Pool set-ups for Friday and Saturday, and the bracket on the back cover. All tournaments should have a program like this as it really helps fans enjoy the tournament more. I saw several people updating the scores in their programs during both days. Thanks to whoever did the great work with the program.

Congratulations to the Brentwood team for winning the tournament. They won 10 matches and only lost 1 game to a tough Germantown team. I know there were several other teams who wished they had done better, but some had players missing because of injuries and some just had off games in their matches. By season's end, they should be recovered and reduce their errors to elminate those close losses. Serving errors were very costly to some teams and as one observer noted "You can't score if you don't hit the ball over the net".

Final Comment:

Cost of admission - $5

Chicken sandwiches - $3

Seeing the Brentwood parents wearing those bear/bruin head caps - Priceless

And the growls before Brentwood's serves! I got a real kick out of that whole group of dads.

The final was spectacular. The first game (27-25 Brentwood) was maybe one of the best technically played single games of volleyball EVER played. Ball handling was nearly flawless, attacks were smooth, digs were great, ball chasing was amazing, and efforts were exhaustive. In 30+ years of officiating, one of the most senior officials in the state said it was perhaps the best single game she'd EVER seen or watched (and she's had some excellent collegiate matches over the years). Same official noted a single play:

This is a true rarity in our sport. Taylor Parrish had a kill that can not be described any other way besides the fact. Brentwood floated a ball over (big mistake) that Taylor promptly crushed. She jumped very high and just hammered it. And where did it land, you ask? If the floor was measured and marked in precise measurements, it landed at the foot of a Brentwood player at approximately the FOUR FOOT LINE. The ball was spiked almost straight down! To paraphrase what the official said, her eyes widened (read: popped open) and gave her partner one of those "Did you just see that?!" looks. THAT, in 30+ years of doing volleyball, was a first. (Wording is mine, but facts are at face value.)

Although HH lost the final, I want to say thanks to Brentwood and Harpeth Hall for a real treat. It was one of the best matches, and especially that first game, that this fan, official, line judge, and spectator has ever seen regardless of level or what's on the line. Taylor & Co. fought for, and almost took away, a game from Brentwood. The tournament was well thought out, well organized, and as always, well enjoyed. Until next year...

While injuries are a part of any athletic program, the sight of Carrie Parrott of Siegel, on crutches with a soft cast, at the tournament was partcularly touching knowing that she has been particularly instrumental with the six seniors on this team of motivating the teams performance. Hope you get back and continue the good work on the rehab and keep that foot elevated.

Thanks, Judge, for doing the math - now we don't have to. It's interesting to look at how each team did and compare the numbers. The 10-0 match record for Brentwood says it all in the end. That really helps your overall season record. I was also surprised that East Ridge ended up at 2-5 as I know they are a better team than their record indicates. It was a tough tourmanent for them along with other teams that I know feel they were better than what they showed.

VballDaddy78, I guess I'll have that name until Oct. 28 when the high school VB season ends in Murfreesboro. I'll change to Page "Basketball" Man for the next sports season as Page basketball starts up with practices and scrimmages. I will miss VB and the old friends and new ones I have met during this season. While some parents have girls who play basketball too, most do not. In this age of "one sport specialists" who play their sport almost year round, I'll look for them and their parents next season, but some will move on due to graduation and I will miss them. But enough of this crap, there is still plenty of VB left to be played and I will do my best to let people know how the matches went.

Speaking of plenty of Vball to be played, I will try to post as much info as I can about the Tandem Tournament in Chatt this coming Saturday.

    • Wanted to see if all of you would lift up Kyle James family in prayer. Kyle was one of the best wrestlers to ever come out of Soddy Daisy and as some of you know he lost his house a few weeks ago and now his family and friends mourns his passing. Not sure if any of you were around in early 2000’s when Kyle was wrestling at Soddy, but he was a 3 time state champ and a Fargo AA along with going to Colorado to train to make the Olympic team. That goal was never reached due to medical issues, but he was an amazing wrestler and his family is as good as gold. If you were around at that time and have any pictures of Kyle, please go onto Alexy Winesburgh FB page and post. Thanks, Doug Benton
    • My opinion the 8 teams will be-  Greenback, Wartburg, Gordonsville, Jo Byrns, Eagleville, Bruceton, Dresden, and South Fulton. Gordonsviile is probably the favorite but I wont say it will be an easy road. With the right draw any of the 8 could win it.
    • I understand Gibson Co. will be announced tomorrow with a familiar name. Not sure about So. Gibson.
    • A huge addition to the staff today! Former Hardin Valley legend and Richmond College running back Aaron Dykes was announced as the running backs coach. Rushed for over 3,000 yards at HVA, with 35 total touchdowns. I loved watching in Hardin Valley. I can’t believe he’s at Bearden now. I know he was trying to get a HVA job, I don’t know what happened there and how he ended up at Bearden, but I'm glad he’s here and believe he will be teaching art class as well! What a good get for the staff!!
    • Thoughts? Gordonsville won it last year with a sophomore pitcher and returned almost everybody. Can anyone beat them?
