Bradley Central's Jackie Pickel tops 2000

Jackie Pickel notched 20 points against Baylor on Saturday night to reach 2000 points for her career. This places her in the top echelon of Bearette players and adds to the many accomplishments this young lady has earned and been awarded in her stellar career at BCHS.

In a huge District 5-AAA game last Friday against McMinn County she logged 25 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 6 steals. That seems to be a typical game for Pickel.

But as good as she is on the floor, it pales in comparison to her character and Christian life that she lives and the way she leads others, not just teammates. She spoke last week on Monday night at the annual FCA banquet in Chattanooga before 1300 people, one of only two Chattanooga-area athletes asked to speak. John Smoltz of the Atlanta Braves was the keynote speaker.

Last year she was the first junior, male or female, ever named as the National Christian Athlete of the Year by Sportsquest. She was also the first player in Tennessee to be accorded this honor. She is once again nominated for the award this year.

She was a member of the 16-under AAU national champions her junior year and was on the team that made the final eight this year. She was named to the AAU All-American team this past year. All-State honors are sure to follow from several sources during the post season.

You just know that she'll be successful in her adult life and I'm betting you'll see her coaching somewhere down the road. It's great to see young people like her develop into outstanding young ladies, but it's even greater to know her and call her friend.

Best of luck to Jackie and the Bearettes as we move toward tournament play.

    • West would be a good team to get behind if they can pull it off again like last year. That championship game last year was awesome.
    • I say that because he stepped out of a MUCH better situation on his own than he would see at least his first 3 years at DCA and it would take at least that much to bring him back to coaching. There are other fish in the sea, but again money talks. Need to fix the girls hoops too. Now I'll try again. Who has Pierce locked in for his staff? Hearing a McGavock man but not the Iceman.
    • I’ve heard mostly good things from the gridiron. Lots of optimism. It sounds like the portal has mostly helped, though there are a few expected defections. Comeback year!
    • Rudesell 1 year at Crockett. Coach Tate 2 weeks a Bradford. South Gibson supposedly going with jcs middle school coach. Which isn’t who I thought would get it, I know the top 2 was between him and Obion girls head coach.
    • Looks like Trent Noah was released from his NLI at South Carolina with intent to pursue playing closer to home. Kentucky and Louisville both reported to be in the mix for him now.
