Tennessee Flight Silver went to Birmingham, AL July 10 - 13 to play in Nike biggest tournament in the early evaluation period and came home with the Gold Ball. Flight Silver defeated Boo Williams Summer League in the finals by 10 points. This event was said to be the best event in the early viewing period with 307 collegiate coaches signed in at this event. Flight Silver went 5 - 0 in pool play to advance to the championship bracket and then defeated Florida Essence in the Semis before taking down Boo Williams. Flight player Cetera DeGraffenried out of Sylva, North Carolina was named MVP of this tournament while Flight player Angela Puleo out of Maryville, Tennessee was named All Tournament.

Flight Navy was also in this event playing in the 16 under division againist some of the top teams in the coutry was elimated by the Arkansas Sirens in the quater final game.

Flight 15 under was defeated in the final four game by All Ohio Red. Flight 15 under led for the majority of this game before loosing at the buzzer by 2.

I was told last night by a Flight parent that this event was alot more competitive than AAU nationals. When asking them why they just stated that Flight beat Dayton Hoopstars by 28 points in Ohio back in May and also have beat Orlando Comets Red by 15 points and both of these teams are in the final 8.

Congratulations to all the Flight teams. Are the results of the Nike Battle in the Boro posted anywhere? How did the Flight teams do in this tournament?

Flight parents might not be the best source of information when it comes to making that judgement. Typically at a "shoe tournament" there are 4 divisions and nobody knows (or cares) who wins.

BTW, A parent from Dayton told me they only lost by single digits to Flight.

Flight player Cetera DeGraffenried out of Sylva, North Carolina was named MVP of this tournament

The fact that the best player on a Tennessee team is from North Carolina is a great example of why the "shoe tournaments" are what they are....an excellent place to be evaluated individually but not a good meter for judging team play. AAU is the better forum for team play as well as a strong opportunity to be seen by evaluators.

Both are viable options for 14-17 yr old student athletes to be put in front of college coaches but AAU has more structure and regulations(as well as clear cut winners)...something the "shoe tournaments" lack.

Lets face it, AAU and "shoe tournaments" are individual tournaments. There is no team concept at all. Players and parents are in it for themselves. Most of the time there is no defense and on offense it is a one on one show. Players pick up all kinds of bad habits that are brought back to their high school teams.

The Flight Silver beat the Georgia Metros by 3 in pool play and lost the championship by 30 to the Metros in the showcase division which was the top division.College coaches in attendance were well over 100.

FAN 2 I have a friend who has the same attitude as you concerning AAU. Could you please tell me why a parent or a player wouldn't want to as you say be in it for themselves if they can get this type of exposure??? With my friend his reason was becuse his son couldn't compete at that level.Sour grapes so to speak. As for the type of play I think that is a matter of opinion because most of these teams practice with the idea they want their players to look good and complete in front of the recruiters.

Most practices are nothing but 5 on 5 with no fundamentals being taught at any level of AAU. Most, not all, that coach are wanna be coaches that know little about how the game should be played. They let the players do whatever they want, then the players and the parents think that this is what should be accepted when they get back to their high school teams. Sure you get to play in front of some college coaches, but still its the high school coach that the college coach relies on to give a realistic view on what the player can or cannot do, grades, and what kind of person the player is. These are important things that AAU coaches know little or nothing about.

You are true in what you say to a certain degree. The successful and reputable AAU team organizations do work hard to teach fundamentals across many age groups particularly the younger ages. The results you see at the state and National levels reflect that too with clubs like Memphis Elite, TN Team Pride, KGC Pride, TN Ladies, TN Wings, TN Express etc. There are many others and I'm sorry if I left anyone's organization out. You are right that "some" coaches are wannabees and don't have the knowlege to help the kids improve their skills and their overall basketball knowledge and game. Those organizations never finish in the top like some of the ones I have mentioned. As far as the exposure teams, if the girls do not know fundamentals or have game by the time they are eligible to play on one of these teams they won't be on one anyway. By the time most of these girls reach 15 or 16 college coaches already have heard of many of them anyway. I don't see anything wrong with a girl getting with a good program like the TN Flight who already has a great game to compete against the best and get the college exposure she deserves. The trend is for college scouts/coaches to attend a major event like AAU Nationals or Battle of the Boro' so they can see many prospects during a weekend and against the best competition. In high school a gifted girl may not always go up against the best competition every game.
