Forrest 41 Cornersville 39 in a thriller.

Forrest: Shankle 23 Schnapp and Beaulieu 7

Cornersville: Nelms 11 Agent 9 Stiles 8

I'm very surprised at how close the Forrest/Cornersville game was. Eagleville pretty much had their way with Cornersville the night before. We pretty much dominated after the first quarter. Why was the Cornersville/Forrest game so close? No way did I think Cornersville could match up with Forrest.

I would like to know as well, I have seen both teams play and I figured Forrest would win by 12 or so...

I think there are a few reasons Cornersville stayed close:

1) Forrest did not shoot the ball well from outside to open up the post for Shankle who still managed to score 23 points.

2) In my opinion, Coach Mac from Forrest does not go deep enough into his bench like Cornersville does to use all the talent they have available.

3) I think the biggest reason Cornersville stayed close is that they are starting to beleive 100% in Coach Wilson's philosophy and it is only a matter of time (this year or next) that Cornersville will become a real powerhouse.

And I heard that Forrest didnt have a starter playing.

Stayed close??? From what I heard Cornersville should have won. I was told they had every opportunity to win and just didnt get it done. Shankle and his good free throw shooting was the difference. Didnt Cornersville miss a 1 and 1 free throw in the last 6 sec. that would have put the game in O.T.? Sounded like a great game sorry I didnt get to watch this one. My hat off to both teams. I did enjoy watching the Bedford Co. classic. The Richland/Cascade game was fun to watch. I agree with you mcsportswriter it takes time to mesh a program that has been down with a new coach. When they get it all put together, watchout!!

I believe Forrest shot 15 of 29 from the free throw line. Cornersville played well and is a good team. Forrest was undersized, as with all their games, and it hurt them on the boards. Cornersville has size and owned the boards. Good luck to Cornersville and don't think for a second that Forrest won't bounce back. Bad night shooting but still found a way to win, that is a sign of a strong team. Good luck rockets.

Yall must have played a different team than we did. Cornersville really struggle against us (Eagleville). They did have some good outside shooters and ran their offense well. They are not very athletic but are always hustling and play hard. They will struggle with quick athletic teams. I was impressed with their pt guard, a good ball handler if he didn't always palm the ball when dribbling. He needs to learn he is not in the NBA. They would be a middle of the road team in region 9. Evidently they played much better against Forrest. Good teams like Forrest win even when they don't play well.

Then what is your take on the eagleville vs. jo byrns game? I heard it was tied at halftime and up until the last 2 or 3 minutes of the game a 6 point game? Forrest was up 20 before Johnson went out in the third and won by 24. And you know jo byrns would be middle of the road in dist.9 as well. I mean come on forrest played bad (with a little help from cornersville) but managed to win. Why take a shot at what i said, did i offend you by that quote? Sorry!

Did you read my thread? Look at the last statement. Good teams win games even when they don,t play well. I believe yall did that. The only thing I was saying was that Cornersville is only a middle of the road team. Everybody has bad games including Eagleville. We lost a few weeks ago against Houston Co. I was'nt putting down Forrest. Sorry if you took it that way. I just think Forrest is better than a 1 or 2 pt. win against Cornersville. I did not see the Jo Byrns game so I can not comment on that, but we did win by double digits. Good luck the rest of the year. I think district 9 is pretty strong this year. It will probably be a batlle between the same top 4 teams as last year. Oh yeah I did not realize that I used the same quote as you did, I'm a little slow I just now caught that as I read your thread again. I guess good mines think a like.

Cornersville is improving but still has a ways to go. It will come with time. As

far as Forrest though, they are not as strong as in years past. Honestly, they

was lucky to get the win against Cornersville. Eagleville, has talent and speed

to burn, however I don't think they will go deep in tournament play if they don't

learn to box out better on the boards..

    • A complete cultural change happened at Greeneville and the administration and community opened up their checkbooks.  What a lot of people don't know is Ballard was Zeller's OC for many years and stopped coaching for two years because Zeller and Ballard didn't see eye to eye on some things.  Zeller lead Greeneville to it's first ever Semi Final appearance in 2000 and lost 28-12 at Maryville and had them in the Quarter Finals in 2002 and 2003.  Z was a great coach but lost some control when it came to making workouts mandatory. (He learned from that Mistake and it was at LC when i coached with him.).  Z was let go going into my Senior Year and was replaced by Steve McCurry who was the one that turned the program around.  Steve had won a 4a state championship at AC Reynolds in Asheville and made the administration completely redo the weight room with new equipment, had a football period at the end of the school day to lift, started devil camp, and brought in coaches like Danny Bentley (Still the OL coach), Ballard as the OC, Cody Baugh (QB coach and still there), and even Spradlen who is Greeneville's head coach now as the DB's Coach.  McCurry only coached for two seasons at Greeneville and took a team that had a losing record the year before and finished my Senior Year making it to the Quarters and having a 10-3 record and then followed it up with a Semi Final appearance the next year with an 11-3 record and back to back conference championships.  Loved McCurry to death but the recession hit and the story i heard was he was still buying new equipment for the team that the Principal didn't authorize and his response was "I don't answer to you and only to Niswonger and Bewley" (Two huge donors).  That was it for him and they Promoted Ballard shortly after that.   Greeneville had always been relevant ever since the the late 70's under Coach Fred Sorrell's.  Since Sorrell's took over in 1977 Greeneville overall winning percentage is over 76%.  The biggest reason people might not have thought Greeneville was "Good" until Ballard was Greeneville always played up Classification wise and could never get over the hump. (When there were 3 classifications we played 3a, when it went to 5 we played 4a).  Greeneville is the largest its ever been with 953 students and where playing teams 2 or 3 times there size back in the day (I had a little over 800 kids in the school when i graduated in 2008).  Other teams always would know they would be sore after a game but depth took over and never won a Championship until Greeneville played in the classification the TSSAA actually assigned them. You had names like Dustin Moore (1993 Mr Football for 3a and who Phillip Fulmer said was one of the greatest athletes he ever recruited), James "Mud Turtle" Mayes, Brigham Lyons, Byron Gillespie, Frankie Debusk (National Champion Qb at Furman with GQ), Jasmine Lowery, Cody Baugh, The Greenway Brothers, Joe Watson (Furman), etc.  Now the cultural is from the Pee Wee league up and you grow up as a young kid wanting to wear the Greene and White.  Here is a really good link when it comes to anything Greeneville Football related. https://greenevillefootball.com/   I also don't coach anymore.  Z told me i was to smart with how the school systems are ran these days and ended up going into real estate in Knoxville which has been a great decision for my life.
    • Yes, they will. I'm wondering what kinds of strides Sale Creek will make heading into the second season under Coach Fitz.
    • No yellow stripes on the rug last night. Biggest crowd I’ve seen at 825 since the alco debacle.
    • I know most Pirate starters were seniors last year. Im not sure how accurate it is but someone said we only have 3 seniors. That Prep team will probably make some noise this coming season too.
