A Question About Austin-East School

It is my understanding that yes, Austin East is a magnet school. A magnet school does not necessarily get to pick and choose their students. Most of the students that go to Austin East are zoned for the school. Other students from around the city can attend a magnet school if a course is offered that they cannot get at another school. If I am wrong and I probably am, I am sure that someone will correct me.

The bball player that you may be thinking was Elston Turner. I believe he played college ball at Ole Miss and then went to the NBA for a short period of time. Once again, waiting for a correction of the facts if I am incorrect.

First I would like to thank you all for at least inquiring before you took hearsay and ran with it. You are correct in E.T. being the player in question. As for the MAGNET SCHOOL , what that details is we offer PERFORMING ARTS courses that other schools don't.We have had numerous students recieve offers to go to some of the top dance schools accross the country and also have students recieve recording contracts as well. Very , Very , Very seldom do we gain an athlete from a MAGNET STUDENT.

QUOTE(hoops fan2 @ Mar 10 2007 - 12:17 PM) 826407252[/snapback]so the question is -- how many players actually live in the austin east zone?

still - the school can choose who they want to attend ---

No we can't CHOOSE who we want to come to A-E. Every player on both the girls and boys team live in our zone. We actually have players on FULTON'S and CARTER'S teams that live in A-E's zone but opted to transfer out.

My understanding is that the school is about half in zone students and half who choose to attend because it is a magnet school. How many athletes live in or out of the zone is really irrelevant. Students still have to abide by the same transfer rules that everyone else does. If they don't start their high school careers at A-E and transfer in without actually moving in to the zone then they have to sit out a year.

Sounds like people are just looking for a reason for AE being good. If you check back for years, they have always been a very good school in sports. Good luck AE. Bring the gold ball to East Tennessee. By the way, somebody give me a geography lesson. I know AE and OS are from East TN and Gleason is from WT, what is the break down of the 6 teams left? How may from East, Middle, and West?

False statement about magnet program. 95% of the kids at Austin East are zoned kids. Like stated earlier Fulton, West and Carter high school actually have kids that live in AE zone that transfer out. Matter of fact AE has the smallest zone in Knox County. Its kids that live less than 3 blocks from the school that are zoned to go 20 minutes away to Gibbs high school, 20 minutes away to Carter high school and 20 minutes away to South Doyle High School. Go on the KNox County Web site and look at the zones. Its amazing how this school is able to continue to compete. Great job AE. Great job Webb.
