Maryville vs. Alcoa

Thats like saying the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry is just a traditional baseball game. NY OWNED Boston for almost 100 years. Even now they are seen as the "dominate" team. Head to head NY has an over a 300 game lead on boston. THey lead the WS titles 26-6 and Al Pennants 39-11. The outcome of a game doesnt determine if a game is a rivalry. How bout Army Navy? their over all records are 49-51-7 but both teams are garbage, so saying because Maryville is more successful against alcoa makes it not a rivalry is like sayin because Army and Navy both stink at football that it shouldnt be a rivalry. "Rivals" go FAR beyond the stats and scores of a game.

Both Maryville and Alcoa DON'T stink, so THAT is the difference.....

Oh, it's definitely a rivalry. Maybe you have to live here and experience it to believe it. I think it's been watered down quite a bit from people moving into the area and not truly understanding it.

It may be a lopsided rivalry, but to say that the game is only a tradition it absurd. That may be part of it, but when the MHS freshmen lose to the AHS freshmen, they don't just say, oh well, it's just a game, they HATE it. Hate it enough to make sure it doesn't happen to them again as upper classmen.

It's a question of pride...it's like playing your older brother and getting the upper hand...doesn't happen very often, but when it does, how sweet it is!!! Yep, definitely a case of sibling rivalry!

Many years Alcoa gets out there in awe of MHS, much like a younger brother does an older brother. That's why the series is so lopsided. It's not that AHS should've/could've won some years, it's the "deer in the headlights" theory.

As far as the Fl. game not having history...Spurrier is from Johnson City...that's all the history that game needed. Again, that "rivalry" has been watered down since he left, but many fans still "strongly dislike" Florida.

So ya , i still havent heard your reply on the whole Yankee's Red Sox "RIVALRY" , which im pretty sure the Yankees are up by a few hundred games

and if u live anywhere near Knoxville Tennessee , or Neyland Stadium , you would know the Florida game is always the biggest game , and has the highest attendance out of any NCAAF game , the record i believe is around 108,000

That pretty much proves my point. Spurrier didn't get hired at Florida until 1990. Florida was a perennial doormat in the SEC for a lot of years before Spurrier's hiring. Tennessee routinely thrashed them. How can that be considered a rivalry if fans only started hating Florida after Spurrier got there, which was only 17 years ago?
