So what you're saying is......."We want a winner. You can be the sorriest human being on earth as long as you win. We don't care we just want more state titles."

Maybe Michael Vick will get an early release and you can hire him. Just don't let him watch your dog.

Obviously some folks are willing to sell their souls for one of those gold balls. There's an easier way. Just call up Donny Dykes and get him to make you a trophy with one. He sells all kinds of that stuff all the time.

DL (who would take a coach with character any day over a state title. And coaches with character can win them too....like Ricky Richards.)

Del, I've repeatedly read over BigJ's post and I don't get any of the junk you're implying in your post. Everybody understands you're ticked because Marion chose to fire your friend. If he chooses to continue in public school coaching, it'll likely happen again. Coach B was in a better position than anyone to properly evaluate Coach Evan's performance. Knowing beforehand the criticsm that decision would generate toward the program, I think it showed a lot of professionalism on his part to make it rather than allow things to degenerate any farther. Marion County football will be fine, and I'm quite sure whoever Coach B selects will be a man of good character........and know how to coach.

Old Pirate asks, nohope is Joe playing basketball again? Tell him to play everything, he'll be a has been soon enough and standing on the sidelines with us other old timers.

No, thankfully he gives us a break during the roundball season. I've told him he'll regret not playing later. Good luck Friday night, sounds like a whole bunch of big ole boys are heading toward South Pittsurg.

I have to argue with you on this one, OP... I know you didn't see York play Marion, but I did and their talent level wasn't as good, they weren't any bigger, or faster, or as athletic but they went 10-0 in the regular season and made it to the 3rd round of the playoffs. I'll tell you why....because they were better coached. They were more disciplined, more physical, and seemed to be more fundamentally sound as a team. All of those things come from coaching. All of you SP fans have been raving about your off season work outs and how much more physical you are this year. That has happened for one reason, because Vic learned a lesson from getting his tail kicked by a more physical, more disciplined, more fundamentally sound Gordonsville team last year and he made sure that it didn't happen again. Coach Evans didn't do that... Game in and game out they did the same things and it seemed like he never learned from his mistakes. What good does it do to have 6-8 assistants out there if you never listen to them? This has played a major part in why he is no longer there. From the fiasco with David Moore and on down the line... Honestly I couldn't believe they ever hired him in the first place... I know he was an assistant under KC and played under him, but that doesn't make him a good coach and it dang sure didn't make him a good player... And yeah he is a great person, but that doesn't win ballgames....

Old Pirate says here you jasper fans go "again". It's not related to just your last coach. You have run off "every" coach you've had since KC. It's not difficult to hear around how coaching prospects feel about the jasper position. Simple: short term position... don't win- fired. Winning with sub-standard talent in a classification loaded with better, faster & stronger talent is not going to happen. Heck you all should be grateful the SP and Grundy kids are helping you. Things would be a lot worse, you would struggle in all sports.

Actually I'm not near that emotionally involved. I feel bad for Jason and I think the whole situation is nuts but I'm not mad or ticked. Your coaching problem is just that....your coaching problem. I have a lot of emotions in the Grundy coaching situation and that one alone.

But just to be real honest here. I don't think you guys are going to be happy with anyone who isn't Ken Colquette. So why not just bring him back? From all accounts he's dying to coach again and the only real roadblock to him coming back to Jasper is gone. Seems like the only logical answer to me.

Oh...and for the record Jason is actually my cousin.

DL.

Old Pirate says come on down and support the pirates. Heck, your bunch are just a bunch of old pirates. It may even feel good to be back home. You know what they say about home, never miss it until you leave. Tell, Joe this Old Pirate keeps up with him.

Yeah I have Don's number if you need it. Seems like that is the only way yall will ever get the gold ball. It is funny a program mired in mediocrity for so long is trying to tell us how to run a program and what we did wrong with firing a coach whom you know nothing about other than being around him for a few years.

Mired in mediocrity... Well we have won more playoff games than you in the last 10 years. But of course to some you beating us or us beating you is the only game on the schedule that matters. Personally I think that's stupid.

But anyway....

I have recently talked with a coach. A respected winner who might be in the market to move and he said he wouldn't touch your job. "If they'd do that to one of their own imagine what they'd do to an outsider. No way I'd go there." You guys are doing more damage to the cause of finding a coach with all the negative stuff said here and in the community. But hey, if you want to run off all the prospects go ahead.

However you do have my curiosity up. I'd love to know all the reasons Jason was fired? Especially since he'll continue to get fired in public schools according to you. Please email me the details. dlowrie@blomand.net

I for one don't think that MCHS vs GCHS isn't the only game that matters. Just another game to me. You are on here bragging about winning more playoff games than we have in the last 10 years? How many rings do you get for those couple of playoff victories??

I believe I made that comment. You took it wrong and I didn't make it as clear as I should have. I simply meant that MOST head coaches get fired during their careers, many more than once. Its just part of the job, especially in public school systems. I meant no disrespect toward Jason. As far as that comment about the coach above, he's probably not the individual we're looking for anyway.

We don't need to get them from Don Dykes we have 4 in the trophy case.

    • I've always been a football fan first and then if you have a band that's awesome. No question that DB has one of the best bands in the country and the whole region should attend at least one DB game just to see their band. I don't know if Nick Saban could come to Kingsport and build a football program that could match the Dobyns Bennett band's success. That said,as mentioned before, a couple of things would have to change in order for the Tribe to just win a state championship on the field.Besides a program that starts from the peewee teams and goes all the way to J Fred with all coaches and weight training { in time }on the same page. Sometimes it also takes a little luck like the 1998 Vols .There are a lot of great athletes at a lot of big schools around the state and just because you want something doesn't mean your going to build a program like Alcoa has. Yes,start at the bottom and have guys that are quality coaches teaching at every level is 100% the first step. Parents can make it a lot easier by getting their young athletes into an early start with conditioning and weights as well when they are old enough to lift.If your son is a man in the weight room before he gets to DB , then it won't take a "Dobbs" coach to make him competitive against other schools athletes when it comes to strength.
    • Dyersburg scrimmaged South Gibson last week
    • A complete cultural change happened at Greeneville and the administration and community opened up their checkbooks.  What a lot of people don't know is Ballard was Zeller's OC for many years and stopped coaching for two years because Zeller and Ballard didn't see eye to eye on some things.  Zeller lead Greeneville to it's first ever Semi Final appearance in 2000 and lost 28-12 at Maryville and had them in the Quarter Finals in 2002 and 2003.  Z was a great coach but lost some control when it came to making workouts mandatory. (He learned from that Mistake and it was at LC when i coached with him.).  Z was let go going into my Senior Year and was replaced by Steve McCurry who was the one that turned the program around.  Steve had won a 4a state championship at AC Reynolds in Asheville and made the administration completely redo the weight room with new equipment, had a football period at the end of the school day to lift, started devil camp, and brought in coaches like Danny Bentley (Still the OL coach), Ballard as the OC, Cody Baugh (QB coach and still there), and even Spradlen who is Greeneville's head coach now as the DB's Coach.  McCurry only coached for two seasons at Greeneville and took a team that had a losing record the year before and finished my Senior Year making it to the Quarters and having a 10-3 record and then followed it up with a Semi Final appearance the next year with an 11-3 record and back to back conference championships.  Loved McCurry to death but the recession hit and the story i heard was he was still buying new equipment for the team that the Principal didn't authorize and his response was "I don't answer to you and only to Niswonger and Bewley" (Two huge donors).  That was it for him and they Promoted Ballard shortly after that.   Greeneville had always been relevant ever since the the late 70's under Coach Fred Sorrell's.  Since Sorrell's took over in 1977 Greeneville overall winning percentage is over 76%.  The biggest reason people might not have thought Greeneville was "Good" until Ballard was Greeneville always played up Classification wise and could never get over the hump. (When there were 3 classifications we played 3a, when it went to 5 we played 4a).  Greeneville is the largest its ever been with 953 students and where playing teams 2 or 3 times there size back in the day (I had a little over 800 kids in the school when i graduated in 2008).  Other teams always would know they would be sore after a game but depth took over and never won a Championship until Greeneville played in the classification the TSSAA actually assigned them. You had names like Dustin Moore (1993 Mr Football for 3a and who Phillip Fulmer said was one of the greatest athletes he ever recruited), James "Mud Turtle" Mayes, Brigham Lyons, Byron Gillespie, Frankie Debusk (National Champion Qb at Furman with GQ), Jasmine Lowery, Cody Baugh, The Greenway Brothers, Joe Watson (Furman), etc.  Now the cultural is from the Pee Wee league up and you grow up as a young kid wanting to wear the Greene and White.  Here is a really good link when it comes to anything Greeneville Football related. https://greenevillefootball.com/   I also don't coach anymore.  Z told me i was to smart with how the school systems are ran these days and ended up going into real estate in Knoxville which has been a great decision for my life.
    • Yes, they will. I'm wondering what kinds of strides Sale Creek will make heading into the second season under Coach Fitz.
