Thanks for the support and I have always supported all of our teams and school system's.... programs fund raiser, etc...... I believe there are things that I would like about Dyer County and there are probably things that you would like here but it is a choice and neither of us is putting the other's choice down. We both seem to definitely know what a small community like our has to offer since I too moved back here several years ago for less pay but to be close to where I grew up and family we take so much for granted those bright lights can be very enticing (I hope I spelled that right) but a lot of time when we get there and see what goes with the bright lights, it is just not as pretty anymore. Like you said once we realize that family or those who reallycare about us are not there the money just does not matter as much. I certainly belive that Mrs. Counce is somewhere in heaven smiling........ and I wish the Bowling Family the best of luck and hopefully he will have much success at UC......

God bless you adsmom86

Thanks..that cheered me up after going to the dentist. It's amazing how "we grow up" and realize the bigger picture.Took me a while but it happened /biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> Look forward to seeing State Gazette this evening. IT IS about the kids!! Patiently waiting for my nephew to hit high school...though jr. high has been great!!!!! I have relatives that attend D'burg and support them. Like 73 said UNTIL those couple of nights a year!!!!!

What I did was simply use the phrase 'A Legend Returns' for the simple fact that is the way James Counce is perceived in Dyersburg. Though it might sound like someone, and I can only assume you are referring to myself, is trying to get in good with the coach, I was already 'in good' with Counce before he left.

I speak of the facts, so please get yours straight before stating what you believe to be correct.

As for the bashing, I have no idea what you are talking about.

As for the kids, it is and always has been about the kids with me, but this is concerning a new coach, not a kid leaving or coming to Dyersburg.

A legend as you call it would have been someone that has actually won a state title at his school or at least coached his team in a title game. He is simply just a good coach that gets put up on a pedestal by you who thinks he is a god. He is just a man nothing more nothing less. And he is not a new coach, get your facts straight. I was just speaking of bashing in general not you. For someone that likes to deal with facts your opinion is what we get the most. I know that he is glad to be back home and just leave it at that. You could write an article that deals with how his return will affect the kids, and get their view on things. I am not trying to be negative, just trying to keep things in perspective. We have what seems to be a good rivalry which can only get more interesting now. Good luck to both teams in the county.

if you think that winning a state championship is what it takes to be a "legend", then you have no clue about sports.........

winning a state championship is the goal, but has never, and i mean never been what the game is about.....

this is what the game the game is about:

1. you can never tell when a break is comming your way, thats why you go all out on every play - shug jordan

2. you get out of life, and out of football, exactly what you put into it......when a person realizes this, and acts accordingly, he is sure to succeed - bart starr

3. success is not a destination, it is a constant, continuous journey - george denny

4. face life now - bobby bowden

5. don't be a spectator, don't let life pass you by - lou holtz

6. always remember that goliath was a 40 point favorite over little david - shug jordan

7. football is an honest game; its true to life.....its a game about sharing; football is a team game, so is life - joe namath

IT IS ABOUT TEACHING BOYS ON HOW TO BECOME MEN....

at a dyersburg high school game, on senior night, i heard a father of a junior player tell others that when his son is a senior, that coach counce will escort him out.......because coach counce had done more about teaching his son about being a "man" than he ever could.....

that player went on and graduated from rhodes college.....

anybody who has played for coach counce will tell you YES HE IS A LEGEND........

LIKE IT OR NOT JAMES COUNCE IS A LEGEND........and no, he did not ride into town on his white horse........it was a black and gold horse with TOGETHER WE ATTACK, written right above the tale.....the one anyone can kiss........

First of all...It is GREAT to have Coach Counce and family back...I wish NOTHING BUT THE BEST FOR COACH BOWLING...COACH BOWLING IS A FINE CHRISTIAN MAN AND AN EXCELLENT COACH...I Think at the end of the season we could see the OFFENSE clicking on all cylinders...Give the man a few years in Union City with his son at the controls...Wouldn't surprise me if DARREN wins a State Title...

Secondly....No Coach Counce HASN"T won a State Title or even Played for a GOLD BALL...But this I can say from being a former player and alumnus of the School... Have I always agreed with the way things were DONE at DHS no...Can fans from other schools say the same thing...YES...Just like Adam Renshaw...I fine a man as you would ever want to meet...Last year..."Choctaw fans were up in arms" This year he is the toast of Dyer County...As well as he should be...He DESERVES it....And Dyer County with that SPREAD OFFENSE will be a force to be reckoned with for a long time.....

Third...Anyone who know anything about COACH COUNCE can see why "DYERSBURG FANS" enjoy his teams....Dyersburg FOR YEARS WAS A DOORMAT....I mean the after the 75 Class graduated...WE GOT HAMMERED ON A REGULAR BASIS....There was one coach I remember....Fred Crawford who had LOTS of talent...That 83-84 class was loaded and won 1 game if I recall.....

Coach Hook was a really good coach and took the Trojans to the State once I believe during his tenure...The Bernard Brothers and Rod Harris were something else....Shane Curry was ONE OF THE BEST BACKS I EVER SAW...But he got sidetracked and he along with a few other players were dismissed...So a CLASS that was undefeated as freshmen and everyone had such high hopes for didn't' pan out...

Enter Coach Counce a few years later... I remember when Counce came here after one year in Camden after a career in Henry County...I remember a rival coach saying..." HE WILL TURN THAT BUNCH AROUND"....Give him time and HE WILL TURN THEM AROUND"....After a couple of 3-8 seasons...Then after a good showing in the JAMBOREE....Dyersburg is winning....Beating Haywood County...Jackson Central Merry...Hardin County...SCHOOLS WE HAVEN"T BEATEN IN YEARS...Finally ran into a Pearl-Cohn team with 4 D-1 players who ALL WENT TO SEC SCHOOLS...Maurice "Buck" Fitzgerald went to UT...as did Reggie Ridley...John Henderson and Santonio Beard when to Alabama....and we sent a couple of kids to UT-Martin and maybe a couple of smaller schools...

That right there should have been A BIG RED FLAG who anyone who watches High school football....How did we make it THAT FAR with NO MAJOR COLLEGE talent to speak of....

And it was that way year in and year out....when a James Counce led team took the field...ATHLETE FOR ATHLETE there was NO WAY we were SUPPOSED TO BE ON THE FIELD WITH SOME OF THE TEAMS WE PLAYED....NO WAY...Sure Counce had his "down years" but year in and year out...He fielded teams that weren't that athletic....THEY WERE WELL COACHED...FUNDAMENTALLY SOUND...AND VERY DISCIPLINED....Dyersburg ( and this is NO KNOCK ON THE KIDS) has NEVER been a FOOTBALL FACTORY...Never... as far as TALENT...This isn't a HAYWOOD COUNTY where "THEY DON"T REBUILD...THEY RELOAD"....Talent out the Wazou over there....Or even as Ripley or Covington where there is TALENT GALORE...But yet...Dyersburg was always in the thick of things...And when you SEE A SQUAD come out to play...And BEAT TEAMS ON A CONSISTENT BASIS that they in reality have NO BUSINESS beating...THAT IS THE MARK OF A PROGRAM...I ALWAYS SAID..."GIVE JAMES COUNCE HAYWOOD COUNTY OR RIPLEY AND HE WOULD HAVE WON A COUPLE OF STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS ALREADY....No knock on our kids but THEY JUST SEEM TO GROW THEM BIGGER AND FASTER in other counties....BUT We were ALWAYS IN THE GAME...

I have always said...COACH COUNCE TOOK LEMONS...AND MADE LEMONADE..( And I mean that as a COMPLIMENT....We had TWO D-1 signees last year in JT BEASLEY AND CODY TETTLETON...The first time someone had signed with a D-1 program since way back in 1976 when Jimmy "The Tasmanian Devil" signed with UT ...This isn't a school where COLLEGE COACHES ARE FLOCKING TO SEE THE TALENT...These teams are PRODUCTS of JAMES COUNCE SYSTEM.......And SURE it would have been great to watch him coach Tyler, Rashad, Beau and Trey and that bunch...But THERE AGAIN...WHO WILL PLAY MAJOR COLLEGE BALL OUT OF THAT GROUP?....I know Caldwell IF HIS GRADES were right could right his own ticket...Rashad?...Beau?...I know FANS had been waiting on this bunch since Middle School...Maybe 10-2 was all coach Counce could have done...who knows...

But the point I am trying to get is ...COACH COUNCE made DYERSBURG FOOTBALL RESPECTABLE...He took them from DOORMAT to Contender...And for that...Then I guess he could be called "A LEGEND" in this area...I am sure some of the other schools would HAVE LOVED TO HAVE HAD HIM....Glad he is back...

And one other thing...This is HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL...This is for kids to HAVE FUN AND ENJOY their teenage years...They are ONLY YOUNG ONCE....This past group of kids lost 5 games in 3 years...HOW MANY KIDS WOULD HAVE GIVEN ANYTHING TO BE APART OF A RECORD LIKE THAT?....Gosh...We were HORRIBLE when I played...Last year was 4-6....What it would have been like to be a part of a 10-2 team..I would have taken it...

But as grownups sometimes WE GET TO CAUGHT UP IN THIS....Do I love HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL...You bet...Do I love Dyersburg High School Football...You bet...Dyer County Football ...You bet... We as fans need to realize this that THIS IS ONLY A GAME...The REAL WORLD AWAITS these Seniors AT BOTH SCHOOLS...Some WILL NEVER PUT ON A FOOTBALL HELMET AGAIN...But there is a REAL CHANCE that God Forbid...That they might be strapping on a DIFFERENT HELMET where the game is PLAYED FOR KEEPS..."THE WAR THAT IS BEING FOUGHT RIGHT NOW"...So that being said...IT IS GREAT TO HAVE COACH COUNCE BACK...IT IS GREAT TO HAVE DYER COUNTY DOING GREAT.....Coach Counce made Dyersburg Football Respectable...Adam Renshaw has the Choctaws respectable( YOU GUYS SHOCKED THE WORLD).....

Let's keep thing in perspective...IT IS ONLY A GAME...Things will get MUCH HARDER on some of these young men in just a few years...for some a FEW MONTHS....That being said...GO TROJANS...GO CHOCTAWS....

He is a great coach and I would assume a great man..but I kind of agree that LEGEND is a big word and one I DO NOT use lightly.Maybe a legend to you , the boys he coached, and his admirers, his family..but not to all. AND THAT IS NOT meant as a personal attack on the man...just that he is not a legend to everyone that lives in Dyer County. Maybe to you but it takes heck of a lot for me to call someone a LEGEND.This is just my opinion and mine alone. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> By the way StevieRay..Unless my kid had rapid age progression and switched genders SHE doesn't play football!! My screen name causes confusion for some...LOL!!! But the lady you mistook me for is very nice.

I will start by saying that off the field Darren Bowling my have been the best man you will ever meet and he my have not. I didn't carry a great off the field relationship with him and don't know a lot about him. I will say that when it comes to football I have a lot of respect for his overall knowledge of the game and was excited about the offense he brought to the game. I always stood strong on my opinion that he would be a great offensive cordinator somewhere. That being said it takes more of a man to stand in there and take the critizm of others and stick it out with a progam that may be on the decline for the next year or two for sure. We're not going to be a state title contender unless we just flat out play amazing football that is for sure. To tell a bunch of high school kids how excited you are about an opprunity like Dyersburg, have a good season, and lose talent like he did, then jump off the Trojan train like he did was very immature in my opinion. I know some of you won't agree but I just don't care. He said in the paper he though Dyersburg was a school where the imprint of tradition was already layed down and he wanted his own tradition. Over the next two years Bowling would have been able to get his offense in place and really put his name on Dyersburg football but he's gone and thats that.

On another note. I am just plum tickled to have Counce back at Dyersburg. I really believe that when Counce gets back in the swing of things this Dyersburg team will become a dynasty I applaud him for taking his time to deal with things and taking a step back to catch his breathe. Also for someone to leave a state title team like MBA, and come back because he felt like this was home. Says a lot. He will bring disipline, respect and character back to Dyersburg. I think he learned a lot from MBA and knows now what it takes to win a state title. There will be some new things from Counce but it will be that same old Counce we grew a custom to. I am excited about what he will bring to the table and suppot any decision he makes. Not that my oppinon will matter to him. And thats what I like most.

i appreciate your words.....and let me say that i attended several games at mba this season.......mba is first class all the way.........you know, gentlemen, scholar, and ..... /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

this was a tuff decision to move in my opinion from the best school in tennessee..........but home is where the heart is........they gave up a lot to move back......

trust me when i say this.......the negative things you are reading are not from dyersburg fans........

DYERSBURG FANS RECOGNIZE THAT COUNCE IS THE GENERAL AND THE LEDGEND...........

i mean come on, who else from this county could be a sports legend??????????

legend - (n) celebrity, someone famous or admired for a skill or talent

for 12 years james counce turned boys into men........turned a fledging football program into a consistent region contender and 10 straight playoff appearances.....that fits the definition.....

and speaking of local sports legends, i only know of 3 sports figures from dyer county who meets that definition and probably 90% of the people on this board never heard of 2 of them.......

outside of coach counce, who are the other 2 ????????

here is a hint......one owned and operated a gas station in downtown dyersburg, and the other was a poor farm boy from finley......

come on stevieray......you know the answer i am sure.....but hold off for a while and give someone else a chance to answer...

I'm sure that ALL will want counce back. BUT ................... I don't know if it'll happen. If they do get him back, certainly there will be a lot of happy Trojan fans ! I guess we'll just have to wait & see !

73 IM VERY HAPPY TO HAVE THE COUNCES BACK IN D"BURG . IF NOT FOR PERSONAL REASONS COUNCE SR. NEVER WOULD HAVE LEFT THIS SPECIAL GROUP OF SENIORS "HE RAISED" HIS WAY. NO DOUBT NEXT YEAR WILL BE A NEAR GROWING SEASON IN PROGESS, HOWEVER THATS WHAT COUNCE DOES THE BEST = TAKE A LIITLE AND MAKE A PORTRAIT OUT OF IT! ILL NEVER UNDER-ESTIMATE WHAT HE CAN ACCOMPLISH WITH ANY GROUP OF YOUNG MEN. THERE ARE LOADS TALENT COMING BACK THAT HE WILL USE TO THEIR BEST ADVANTAGES. I ALSO WOULD LIKE TO GIVE MY BEST TO BOWLING AND STAFF; HE HAD SO MUCH TALENT THAT WASNT USED TO THEIR TALENT LEVELS ! HEY HOWS B.A. DOING, I KNOW HE WILL RESPOND WITH "EM" DAVIS GENES OVER-FLOWING WITHIN !
