Looking at classification

There was some discussion in one of the basketball forums about classification, I was interested in it so I looked at the latest enrollments I could find, from an independent school analysis site. Some of the enrollments weren't available, including all private schools and ones with more than just 9-12, as it has their below-ninth grade enrollment combined. Those changes should be known this fall and then the TSSAA will reclassify. Those schools are marked with an *.

Here is what I came up with, instead of listing them all just the largest in 1A, then smallest and largest in 2A and 3A. Private schools have their multiplier total for 9-12.

1A, 10 largest schools.

Trinity Christian 385*

Wayne County 389

Friendship Christian 391 *

Halls 393

Mt Pleasant 394

McKenzie 395

Unaka 395

Union City 402

Forrest 402 *

Peabody 406

2A, 10 smallest schools

Oneida 414

Trousdale 414

Fayette Academy 419 *

Huntingdon 419

Cascade 422 *

Cosby 430

Houston County 433

North Greene 433

East Robertson 436

Dresden 441

Richland 441

2A, 10 largest schools

Chuckey-Doak 642

Goodpasture 648 *

Westview 651

Sweetwater 652

Smith Co. 652

Waverly 655

Carver 659

Stewart Co.664

York 668

CAK 671 *

3A, 10 smallest schools

Harpeth 673

Fairview 674

B. T. Washington 677

USJ 680 *

Cannon Co. 685

Grundy Co. 697

Johnson Co. 697

Sullivan North 703 *

Loudon 704

West Greene 704

3A, 10 largest schools

Memphis East 939 *

Lipscomb 947 *

Sycamore 949

Carter 963

Montgomery Central 969

Giles Co. 980

Knoxville Catholic 986 *

Sequoyah 990

Dyersburg 990

Brainerd 995

1A and 2A could change a lot if the multiplier is removed, it's expected to be up for a vote. That would move a lot of 1A public schools back to 2A, as most of the private schools would move down from 2A. These numbers aren't exact and are probably already outdated on a lot of the schools, but it might give a basic idea of what it would be like for the next classification period.

It doesn't look too much different from right now. If the multiplier was removed some of the top programs such as Trousdale, McKenzie, possibly Gordonsville might move up and you'd have very few teams able to compete in my opinion.

By these numbers, CAK would be on the verge of going to 3A, Trousdale going to 2A. If their enrollments changed or others did they could stay, or move up, there's no telling yet.

Knoxville Catholic isn't too far under the cutoff by these numbers, same for Lipscomb. They'd be playing 4A and I still think they could do well. Around here Grundy isn't too far from 2A, that would be good to have a local rivalry back on the schedule every year, if Sequatchie doesn't move to 3A and misses them in a switch of classes.

  • 1 month later...

well in 2009 AND 2010 SEASON 2A and 1A will be in the same classification.. putting marion county and spitt in the same region again .. woo hooooo!!

I thought the plan, if passed, will have regions based on the three-class system, A, AA and AAA, then split the teams into the five (or six) class groupings for the playoffs. Unless Marion drops into Class A for all other sports, they'd be in the AA group. These would also be pretty close to a 1A, 2A-3A, and 4A-5A system if they want to term it that way, probably with a few exceptions for the smallest and largest in each class.

I still think the urban-rural plan would work if they'd raise the urban class enrollment maximum up a bit, not just stopping at the current 4A cutoff. With more schools there could be a split in that group and you wouldn't having potential matchups such as Sale Creek vs Hixson causing problems. That will be the hold-up on this system apparently. Maybe go up to 600 from the small urban class-these would be mostly private schools with a few like Lookout Valley added, and go 601-1200 for the larger class-these would include Howard, Hixson, Brainerd, etc.

That's what I thought to but Stephen Hargis' article in the Chattanooga paper says otherwise.

Article > Harigis Article

However, the TSSAA plan here said what you said: TSSAA Classification Possibilities

Here is the TSSAA explaination of plan B which actually makes good sense so I don't know why the coaches couldn't understand it.

Plan B. Three-class plan is used for football district alignment with AAA being split

into two classes (5A/4A) and AA into two classes (3A/2A) for football playoff

purposes. Class A remains in one class for football due to the large number

of non-football playing schools.

In football (Class AAA) the top two teams from each district (16 districts)

would qualify for the playoffs for a total of 32 teams. The upper half (by

enrollment) of the schools in AAA would be 5A and the lower half would be

4A. The 32 teams finishing 1st and 2nd in each of the 16 districts would be

played in 4A and 5A. The remaining spots in each (4A & 5A) would be filled

with wild cards. There would be 32 teams in 5A and 32 teams in 4A for a

total of 64 in Class AAA. The playoff brackets would then be set. You would

follow the same procedure for AA (2A & 3A). The brackets would then be set

in the same manner as 2A football in 2007 (needs link).

Rationale: Places schools in the same districts in F, Bk, B, S?€¦; decreases

travel for schools by using three-class plan rather than five; keeps five

football classes that have similar make-up to present plan.

Stephen Hargis's explaination of plan B talks about there being a 6A which would be new. That seems kind of stupid to create a 6A when 5A is really too many.

This is basically a version of the Plan Z for those people who have been watching this stuff. As far as Plan C goes, I think it is way too complicated and borders on ridiculous in places such as Lookout Valley ending up in AAA.

Well, there is a discrepancy in the TSSAA document and the Hargis article.

the TSSAA plan B

AAA = 4a & 5a until playoffs

AA = 3a and 2a until playoffs

A = 1a

Hargis said:

AAA = 6a & 5a until playoffs

AA = 4a & 3a until playoffs

A = 1a & 2a until playoffs

So apparently there will be a new 6a classification which means the math and dividing will have to be done an 1a though 6a first and it will depend on where Jasper is on the cut.

    • And can you tell me who those two quarterbacks were, and every kid that was put into college from Bearden is a Bearden kid? It’s kind of why they graduated from Bearden.   and I would definitely not consider ETSU “waste”…
    • Most of this is complete gibberish. But the one part I could decipher is putting kids in college. This coaching staff hasn’t put a single Bearden kid in college. They completed wasted one of the best WRs in East TN and have ruined two talented QBs. All because they’re in over their heads.
    • Well, I’d hope the new coaching staff thinks they are all that because they can always walk around the school, anytime they want, thinking that, especially for what they’ve done for the student athletes and the players, putting more kids in college in his first season than the old coaching staff did in numerous years combined, but we will just sweep over that because I know you don’t like facts. But trust me, nobody wanted Mr. Big britches, made the star player switch to quarterback, which is ultimately the reason he ended up transferring to play the position. He loved, but unfortunately, had to be at another school because Mr. Big Britches doesn’t like when a teenager knows more than him, but can’t expect much coming from a guy who used all class throwing pencils up into the ceiling and making fun of football kids who were failing class right to their face, and in front of numerous students, even projecting on the board most of the time.
    • After that first paragraph, I can see why you’re a TA and not a teacher. Have you made the move from South Knoxville to Bearden yet?    Maybe he left because he is an actual teacher and coach, and didn’t want to be associated with a group of foul mouthed middle school coaches who like to pretend they’re big time.
    • Yeah and the coach is gone. Whole bizarre situation here. We played them a couple of times at MTSU last few years. She was a player for sure.
