MJ Brown to walk on at UT?

I think a lot of time when a kid goes to college his success is determined not only by his talent but being put in the right situation. If MJ is put in the right situation & brought along in the program then he'll be ok. Just look at what Larry Bird did if he stays at Indiana maybe he doesn't become one of the greatest of all time. Talent sometimes is a small part of the equation.

Everybody on here wants the best for MJ and wants him to succeed. But there is a reason not one single high major offered. Are the high majors stupid and we're all the experts...I think not. Anybody that says MJ might make a mistake by going as a walkon is considered an MJ hater, thats the stupidest thing I have ever heard. MJ is taking a huge gamble with all this...in my opinion. I don't even think MJ cracked the top 300. MJ may not even go to UT. And as far as I can tell Pearl hasn't offered a full ride after his freshman year either. If I had to make an educated guess right now I would say MJ goes to Western Kentucky and not UT. I hope he does well whereever he goes, but I would caution those that are making this kid into some kind of basketball God.

Amen Yankees! Great post! It is a huge gamble and I believe that gamble won't hit jackpot like everyone else thinks it will... Western Kentucky would be a great fit for MJ, also Western Kentucky still has a few guards and MJ could still compete for a starting position.

Greenfieldfan, you make a great point MJ had a great high school career NO DOUBT he can play!!!! But his high school career was in Class A no comparison to SEC ball!! Union City fans have made MJ into the GOD of basketball and he isn't a LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, or Kevin Garnett at all!!

MJ would be MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH better off at Western Kentucky!!! I hope MJ the best wherever he goes I just think "God" will sit the bench for 4 years at Tennessee!!

Daniel West played 1A ball in Michigan.Because he got offered a scholarship by Tenn, doesnt make him a better player than MJ.I think that MJ will get more time than West do next year.I think that MJ is better than Jordan Howell, who graduated, and Ramar Smith, who got kicked off. Neither could make an open jump shot, and both got benched in the tournament because neither was effective. He went with JP prince, who is a slasher and not a point guard.MJ will be ok at UT.

I'm not a Union City fan but I honestly think MJ can and will make it at UT. I've seen him play enough times and I think he can make it. You guys say he played Single A ball. So did Patrick Willis and Trey Pearson. Patrick Willis was the best defensive player in the NFL this year and he played Single A in Bruceton and Tennessee thought the guy had no chance of making it at UT so he ended up at Ole Miss. Trey Pearson just screwed up from the start. The point I'm getting to is those two guys dominated in Single A ball. So did MJ Brown!!!! Name one person in Single A that has shut MJ Brown down over the past 2 years. Exactly, either you folks haven't seen him play and don't know or you've never seen him been shut down. I like to refer back to this one. Remember in the state tournaments when Union City was playing against the "ALMIGHTY" Manassas team with that Reginald Bucker? I'm pretty sure MJ single-handedly brought that team back and won that state championship for them. He had 3 points at the half and finished the game with 33 or 35. NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL CLUTCH! No one shut the kid down and that team had 4 players go on to sign at colleges this year and had a post player that is soon to be going to wherever he wants.

MJ single handedly brought Union City back! Now that isn't what you were saying the other day do I need to find it for you?? I believe you said COACHING was the reason Union City won the state championship... I could be wrong, but you primarily put it on the Manassas coach! Now you are primarily putting it on MJ's back??? NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL CONFUSED!!! No one in Single A shut MJ down! Just like no one in Single A shut down Buckner! How many guys in Single A have went to a high major college as a walk-on and play basketball??

COACHING!

I hate to put it on the Manassas coach but it was pretty much his fault. If you watched the Single A state championship, Manassas came out in the first half ON FIRE! Union City was down 16 points at the half and MJ Brown from Union City only had 3. Manassas came out in the second half and kept jacking up the 3's and they got very cold from 3 pt. range. MJ Brown started to get into a groove and got his team rolling and finished with 33 points. Manassas never found a way to stop MJ in that second half and the Manassas coach just let his players keep chunking the 3's up while shooting poorly. Manassas should be back this year!

There you go...I'll find it for you AND bold the parts where I talked about MJ....

You know, there's several different factors that go into winning a basketball game. Yes, I did say the majority of it was Manassas's coaches fault and he admitted it after the game. I guarantee you if Manassas slows things down in that game they win a state championship. Maybe YOU are the one that is confused!

No I'm not confused!!!! I don't get confused easily I just forget things easily! I agree with you there are several factors: composure, coaching, effectiveness, defense, turnovers, and etc. And if Manassas did slow it down and run some clock they would be state champions! But they didn't slow it down and Union City won the state championship!

Question.... for all of the posters that love and believe in MR. Brown what is the main reason that MJ Brown was sub top 300 player and not being heavily recruited by high majors.....lack of exposure( 2-time Mr. Basketball), point guard abilities, size....just curious. I admit that I have only seen him play 3 or 4 times. And what is the main difference with him and Marquis Weddle???

Good point. After watching both, MJ is no question the better player to come out of UC. Just like Marquis, he was not looked at strongly as well IMO. No disrespect to Marquis, but MJ is a much, much better ball handler and floor leader. Not even in the same league if you ask me.

Now about true shooting, I would say Quis is a tad better. When he is on, man he is on.

Marquis went on to be the OVC freshman of the year averaging 17pts per game (& ranked 4th overall in OVC scoring BTW) all the while having to play bridesmaid behind one of the country's top scorers and future pro Lester Hudson.

If you were to compare the two on that fact alone of having played together on the same team, then yes, I can see MJ walking on at UT and having a future ahead of him, no doubt.

The last 3 Mr Basketballs in single A came out of UC.

Marquis won one. MJ won two.

Marquis won 1 state title. MJ won 2. MJ lead his team to an undefeated record his senor season.

Marquis' senior year at the state tournament MJ really shined even though he was only a sophomore.

He may have a better "fit" to play automatically at western as Yankees says, but playing in the SEC is not impossible at all as some make it out to believe.

I have seen MJ play three years in a row against Bolivar, Liberty, Manassas, and a few others which is nothing close to what the UC people have seen...I concede that to anyone. MJ has plenty of State Tournement expierence and AAU acoording to one poster..although he turned down a chance to play with the Ballerz in order to play with a local team(according to the same poster), which is a huge mistake for a kid trying to get big time exposure. Some people are going to say I'm crazy, haven't seen him play enough, and a host of other reasons.....I think it's as simple as he just doesn't have High Major athleteic ability , nothing more nothing less. I saw Jewan Long dunk over a 7 footer his senior year. Jewan is a much much better athlete than MJ. Jewan is at Murray although he could have played high major in hopes of getting playing time after a couple of years. MJ is a good athlete but not a high major athlete, thats not a knock against MJ.The big power conferences are about superior speed, quickness, and leaping ability and you better be able to go toe to toe in all those categories or your in trouble. There is a ref from Hardeman county that has been doing mud major games for a few years and just got to do big 10 games within the last couple of years and he said the difference is like nght and day. Of course we all know that I'm just saying this is a man that actually has to run up and down the court with these kids and sees first hand what it's like.

Like I said for every JuJuan Smith there are 100 that never see playing time. And before somebody brings up somebodyLee Humphery from Florida's national championships(he wasn't a great athlete), I will just point out that those are specialist type players...recruited to shoot the three and for nothing else.....And even if you look at recruiting as a whole there aren't that many at the high major level. MJ is not a shooter in the same mold as Humphery.

As for Weddle...he didn't have high major athletic ability either and was undersized on top of that.

The other thing to remember is that UT has been offered nothing more than walk-on (unless something has changed)...Why is that? That is the reason MJ hasn't commited to UT ( I think) because UT hasen't made the commitment to him (by offereing a scholarship after his freshman year) If they beleived in him they wouldn'ty ask he prove himself first.

I hope I am wrong an MJ makes all SEC. We will see soon.

I'm a UT fan so I hope MJ goes to Knoxville. It gives us more depth at the point guard position. He will be either #4 or lower on the depth chart at point guard in Knoxville. There is no doubt that MJ will work hard. I hope he impresses everyone in practice and moves up the depth chart and starts as a freshman as chipper thinks.

But I agree with yankee on most everything he said, the odds are against him. College coaches know talent. They miss a prospect every now and then but not very often. The bigtime college coaches dont think MJ can play bigtime basketball. Why do I say that, when they dont recruit you then they are saying that. Most coaches in America will welcome MJ to walk on because they dont have anything invested. It will be a tough task for MJ to get any playing time in the next couple of years. I hope that I am wrong, I am pulling for our local kids.
