I am curious how someone would be "qualified" to coach by tssaa standards and how you would go about getting qualified?. Because I recently heard of the head coaching job is vacant at cookeville, and was told that you do not have to be a teacher to be a head coach.

If you have served as a non-faculty assistant coach for five years, you can then be considered for a head-coaching position in Softball.

But before you can become a non-faculty assistant coach you must take and pass a 2 day clinic sponsored by TSSAA. Contact them for dates and locations.

Actually, they have an online test that you can take instead of the two day clinic now. It can be found at tssaa.org and is free of charge. You passing score will be sent to whatever TSSAA membership school that you submit to the website.

Actually, these are two different things. The online exam is the Online Coaches Training Session that everyone has to take within their first year as a coach. The two-day clinic is the Coaches Education Course and all non-faculty coaches must pass this course with-in two years to be eligible to continue as a non-faculty coach. The schedule of Coaches Education Courses is available on the TSSAA home page.

This from the handbook:

E. A person who has served as a non-faculty assistant coach in football, basketball, baseball, girls' softball, and track may become a head coach in that sport if that person has five or more years of experience as an assistant coach and has taken the ASEP Coaches Education Course in a TSSAA-approved course and completed the TSSAA Online Coaches Training Session.

F. All non-faculty assistant coaches must complete the ASEP Coaches Education Program in a TSSAA-approved course within two years of his/her employment and must complete the TSSAA Online Coaches Training Session within the first year of his/her employment.

Well, maybe Cookeville can get a coach now that will be the coach and the boss of his team, not the players. If they can get someone that picks the girls at tryout on their ability and not for who they know, they are capable of having a very good team. All a new coach need to do is get rid of the drama and be the coach.

"picking girls based solely on ability".......Now that would be a new concept to High School Sports..... /roflolk.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflolk:" border="0" alt="roflolk.gif" />

Can be 5 year non-faculty coach for any sport, not necessarily the one you want to be the head coach of. Example 5 years non faculty assistant coach volleyball = head coach softball

If Cookeville was smart their "Sport Gods" that make the decisions would be looking for someone who meets and exceeds any qualifications that TSSAA has and find an experienced and successful head coach. That program was so successful for so many years and to have it in the situation it is now is a disgrace to all Verdice Duff worked so hard to achieve. Has the position been advertised as open?? because if it hasn't I can't imagine a top notch head coach even finding out about it just by word of mouth. My guess it has been done hush hush.
