Three Oak Ridge Head Coaches have been mentioned and here are just some of their accomplishments:

Jack Armstrong 1955 - 1968

105 - 28 - 5 (77.9%)

4 State Champions

1 National Champion

Emory Hale 1969 - 1980

112 - 23 (83%)

3 State Champions

Ranked # 3 in Nation in 1980

Joe Gaddis 1988 - 1998

119 - 24 (83.2%)

1 State Champion

Ranked # 20 in Nation in 1991

All three coaches deserve to be mentioned because they all were great coaches in their particular era of high school football. Also, all three had wonderful assistant coaches, wonderful players, and wonderful community support. The city of Oak Ridge and ORHS has been blessed to have had all three. Who was the better coach? I do not know.

I do know that their legacies live on in Oak Ridge and inspire the youth of today. To those who predict gloom and doom for Oak Ridge let them tilt at the windmills of foolishness.

I want to thank "simocleo" for first mentioning the three OR coaches on the board.

He helped put Maryville on the map! Led Maryville to state championships in 1970,76 and 78. Had two runner up teams in 1977 ans 79. He outcoached Carlton Flatt twice head to head. After he left Maryville he helped turn around Kingsport Dobyns Bennett. He did real well up there even though he never won a state title there!

Ted was the master motivator! Ted would rip you a new one but after practice he would put his arm around you and tell you that you are doing a good job! Maryville's field should have been named after Ted Wilson.

Boyce Smith from Springfield might not be the best but he has to be listed. Coached for almost 40 years(?) years at the same school. Always had good teams, but I don't know if he ever won a state championship.

If you based the best ever by championships won, you can't leave out Carlton Flatt. Many may not agree with his methods or arrogance but he should pass Tucker for most victories in Tennessee history if not this year by next year.

has coached at small programs his entire career and always been competitive with everyone he has played. coached at Marion County from about 1980 to 1996. had six state championship appearances, including four championship victories in six years, highlighted by arguably the biggest upset in championship history, a victory over Carlton Flatt's Brentwood Ac. had the best playoff winning percentage of any active coach. also had a prior stint at a very small school in Alabama (Bridgeport)and posted outstanding winning percentage with a program that had been poor to sub-par for years. highlighted by beating the number one ranked school in Alabama's largest classification with a Bridgeport squad that had less than twenty players.
