Canesoverhere
TSSAA finalizing new district alignments today: Some city rivalries will be lost By Jason Smith (Contact), Memphis Commercial Appeal Thursday, November 13, 2008 A few traditional district rivalries will end and new ones will be formed today when the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association's Board of Control meets in Murfreesboro to finalize its reclassification process for the 2009-13 school years. Beginning at 9 a.m. today, the Board will place all schools into geographically-divided districts and regions in an attempt to lower travel costs for teams. In Division 1, schools will be divided amongst 16 districts in each of three classes (Class A, AA and AAA). In football, the three classes will be divided into six for the playoffs, with Class A consisting of 1A and 2A teams; Class AA consisting of 3A and 4A teams; and Class AAA made up of 5A and 6A teams. While questions remain about which area schools will be placed in which districts, it's clear that some regional rivalries, such as Fairley-Melrose football and Washington-Mitchell basketball, will be dissolved. Fairley and Kingsbury have each been classified as Class AA schools, while Melrose will play in a Class AAA league that includes East and White Station. Mitchell, which had been a Class AA school, moves up to Class AAA, and could be placed in a district that also includes East, Melrose or White Station. Manassas, meanwhile, moves up from Class A to Class AA, and could be placed in a district that includes Carver and Washington. Also expected out of today's meeting is a new-look Division 2-A, one that will include at least 11 new schools, including Evangelical Christian School, Fayette Academy, University School of Jackson and Nashville Donelson Christian Academy. In other business Wednesday, the Board voted to keep the girls state soccer tournament in Chattanooga through 2012. It also voted to allow girls to participate against boys in wrestling during the regular season. After the regular season, the girls must choose to participate in the girls-only wrestling tournament or to continue to wrestle with boys in the postseason.
