Yeah, tell that to the folks who think it is politically correct to refer to ALL blacks as "African-American". Pride and Heritage? If that is the case, then from this point forward I would like to be referred to as "Scottish-Irish-German-French-Native-American."

What does that even remotely have to do with ANYTHING we've been talking about?

It has absolutely nothing to do with anything you have said. It was in response to someone who said claiming pride and heritage is similar terminology to not letting go. I was merely responding to that statement.

Just curious, but what does half the stuff that's been discussed in this thread have to do with the original topic?

The comment about not letting go was in response to the individual that stated referring to northerners as yankees was a matter of pride and heritage. In a roundabout way, he is right. It is a facet of southern heritage. The resentment of the north from the war passed on from one generation to another(not letting go). People in the north could care less....it's water under the bridge.

Without continuing the bomb throwing, here's a perspective from those of us from the South who feel that the best college football in America is played here every year.

1.) "It IS the biggest rivalry in college ball, and arguably all of sports as ranked by ESPN." You mean the same ESPN that is owned by ABC, the Rose Bowl network? The ESPN/ABC alliance that deeply needed a bad Rose Bowl matchup that featured Washington State to seemingly matter? The ESPN/ABC alliance that openly marketed Charles Woodson as the obvious choice to win the Heisman to further hype their game, though that choice looks worse with every passing year? The same alliance that gave us Bob Griese actually crying in the booth because his son was able to rally the supposed best team in America by the #8 team in the country by 5 points?

2.) "How many times has the outcome of the game cost the loser the conference title or a shot at the national championship since the inception of crowning a national champion? No comparison there." No, the "no comparison" is in the fact that the Big 10 doesn't win National Championships. The SEC alone has 9 National Titles in the last 30 years compared to 2 for the Big 10. That doesn't include 9 more won by Southern schools. Other schools from the North?.....3.

3.) "The 2006 game was watched in 57 countries by the largest audience to ever watch a college football game." Right, and ESPN gave us a 500 hour ticker to let us know what a sacred event it was going to be. Then Herbstriet the homer and company told us how ignorant we were if we didn't want a rematch for the National Title. After all, Michigan barely lost in the Horse Shoe! Only Normandy could have been so tough! Flash foward one month. Both of them got embarrassed in Bowl games. (SEC....again). Flash foward one year, now the Buckeyes will get it right....embarrassed! (SEC....again).

I'm done now, respond if you wish. Just know this, that's why we down here feel the way we do. Facts are aggravating things. The pro-Big 10 gameday crew will always hype the league, do specials on how awesome the games and traditions are, and treat us like we're nose picking hicks if we don't agree. Then, historically speaking, another Southern team will win the National Title and there will be cricket silence.

You don't think that OSU/Michigan fans spend 365 1/4 days hating each other? What an uninformed opinion. It's not OSU vs Michigan....it is known as "THE GAME" for a reason. It IS the biggest rivalry in college ball, and arguably all of sports as ranked by ESPN.

You won't see any similar commercials for Alabama/Auburn lol. Alabama-Auburn is the rivalry game that matters to 2 schools. Yes it is a huge rivalry, but to a far smaller in state audience. As for the shootings, that my friend is another difference between us northerners and rednecks. How many times has the outcome of the game cost the loser the conference title or a shot at the national championship since the inception of crowning a national champion? No comparison there. Bo vs Woody was a grudge match that has no equal. An impressive list of Ohio high school players have defected across the state line to become Michigan greats, adding fuel to the fire(Desmond Howard, Rod Woodson, Elvis Grbac, Mario Manningham, Ricky Powers, Prescott Burgess just off the top of my head). How many people outside the state of Alabama tune in for the iron bowl? OSU/Michigan have the two largest number of alumni watching from the world over. The 2006 game was watched in 57 countries by the largest audience to ever watch a college football game. As was stated during the game....from China, to Scotland, the Middle East, and even at the rock of Gibraltar. Easily the most sought after and expensive ticket. Some fans were paying over 3 thousand dollars a ticket in '06.

1) You base the rivalry on allainces and Charles Woodson and Bob Griese? That stuff is weak. Put down the mason jar and read this....THE GAME It HAS affected the outcome of the conference/national championship numerous times by one knocking the other out of contention for either title. They HAVE kept each other from winning a national title multiple times. How many times has Auburn/Alabama decided a conference or national championship? More often than not, there is more on the line when The Game is played. Not just a genuine hatred for each other. Why is that so hard for you to digest? Your biggest problem is ignorance of the history of the rivalry. You just know the game is between "yankees", therefore it can't be as big as they say it is.

2) see 1. If your bitter rival knocks you out of title contention, you win fewer titles. Best Rivalries Notice where the Iron Bowl is ranked, and how many times we have knocked each other out of a national title in the last 30 years.

3) The '06 game has to be one of the biggest choke jobs in sports history. Unanimous #1 at the end of the season(including your SEC coaches and media). Very similar to '02 vs Miami. One team a juggernaut, the other an underdog hearing for over a month "you don't belong in this game". OSU was fat, lazy, and overconfident from the postseason awards banquet circuit. To this day, I read articles by analysts recalling the game and stating OSU was the more talented team, but the coaching staff laid an egg. That night I realized Jim Tressel had been thoroughly outcoached by Ohio's own Urban Meyer, and JT's style of football was behind the times. Chris Leak was an erratic qb who had a very up and down season. We chose to continually drop back in zone, only blitzing 4 or 5 times the whole game. More often than not rushing 3, dropping 8 and turning our lb's into safeties. In doing so, we gave him all the time in the world to find recievers and be comfortable in the pocket. We made a qb who struggled all year look like John Elway with that defensive package. Essentially playing 4 quarters of prevent defense. Never made a single adjustment after halftime. We didn't play that type of scheme all year long. The whole state was livid over that. Last year we were supposed to be a year away from being in the game, but everyone in front of us lost. And by many writers' opinions, so would 117 other teams that night. Especially with them playing in what amounted to a home game. Try and pick a whole in that one. If JT doesn't put the game in Todd Boeckman's hands, we have a shot at winning. LSU put 8 and 9 guys in the box and still could not stop Beanie Wells. He was good for 4 yards every play even when they knew he was getting the ball. Once again outcoached by a native Ohioan. These games were not about talent. They were about coaching philosiphies.

As for the gameday crew, you must be deaf. They bash the Big 10 regularly, but do know and respect the magnitude of the game. Just because you don't agree with them doesn't make them all idiots. And no, you're not done by a longshot lol. Just know this....that's why we feel the way we do in the north. We can play dueling keyboards until the cows come home, and you and I will convince neither of the other's view. Like the 1860's all over again, lol. Where you stand depends on where you sit.

The South and North are like two foreign countries when it comes to culture and the two will always be at odds with one another in a neverending effort to one-up the other. This hasn't changed since the 1600's. What makes anyone believe it is any different in 2008? South > North! LOL! Carry On!

Same thing in the north, we just call it tea. Can't figure out why people down here don't think we drink it up north.

No, No, No, in the South we can go to a restaurant....practically ANY restaurant, and get a sweet ICED tea. In fact, "sweet" and "iced" are interchangable terms in the South in that regard. In fact, you have to specify if you don't want your iced tea sweetened.

However, if you want that up North you have to know how to make it yourself. If you simply order "tea" at a restaurant up north, they are likely going to bring you hot tea unless you specify "iced tea." It's a just a different culture.
