Unaka basketball coach

I said weak class A, reading is fundamental. The region is just a replay of the district every season, two teams from the WVC are shoe in's for the sub-state. Class A competition in North East TN is weak. Look what Hampton did a few years ago after getting smashed in AA. They drop to class A and went to the State Tourney. I said Class A is weak in North East TN, not the WVC, and when Larry coached at Unaka, Hampton and Cloudland where in their primes, and North Greene had the Weems girl, Larry didnt have the talent to bring to the table with that bunch.

You make a very good point, and some would like to see the "replay" discontinued by making the region - - - the first, and only sub-state qualifier. Proponents of the district tournaments insist that the best teams should win regardless, that the good teams should peak at tournament time. Of course, they should. However, defeating even an average, familiar opponent three, four, or even five times is a tall order.

Krich, do you know what years that Larry Bowling coached the Lady Rangers? Just curious!

For now, I'll defer to daddysgirl for the official numbers, because (I think) he coached a few seasons while our family was in California. Also, Starman or Wes would have much more reliable records than me. If we don't hear something soon, I'll drop by and gather the information.

Suffice it to say, Coach Bowling is the coaching mainstay at Unaka. He's helped several coaches, and in multiple sports over the decades.

And you're right, he's not such a bad guy.

I would be afraid to guess on the years, I would say mid 90's, I can remember Hughes at Cloudland, Troutman at Hampton, and Weems at NG. Talk about some wars, Larry didnt have the talent to play with those teams because they all had a stud and some real good players around them. And let's not forget at that same time Raider was at Happy Valley with some pretty darn good teams of his own, and Ricker and his teams of distruction at South Greene. Basketball in Northeast TN was tough. I am by no means taking anything away from Chambers's accomplishments, I was just stating that this is not Pat Summit that was let go. Did he do anything that anyother coach hasn't done, probably not, but he got caught. Time to move on, this is not the end of Lady Ranger basketball, he wasnt the first and the new coach wont be the last.

Anyone know how Mr Wright did against South Greenes girls today? /rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

They played Gatlinburg Pittman the first game and won, very poor offensive effort, although this ws their first scrimmage under coach Wright this team should be at a higher level than what they showed today. Both the games they played today were very low scoring .The players were unable to execute on offense, they seemed confused on who plays what position and what plays they were to run, it was a bit unorganized but again it's the beginning of the season with a new coach at the helm.

South Greene came out of the gate playing over aggressive, their usual unsportsmanship like style may have cost Unaka one of their key players the rest of the season with a injury (possible ACL). The game was tied late in the second period (2 to 2) (yes that's not a typo error /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" /> ) but in the 4th period SG managed to start elbowing their way underneath to score and pulled away. I believe Unaka mustarded up a total of 8 or 10 points through 4 periods, I think SG had 38. Unaka is in for long season if today sets the course for the rest of the year but hopefully things will get better.
