I have read a couple of posts referring to safety at playoffs games in Memphis. In the Mananssas/Mckenzie thread a fan from Milan stated this:

???I'll never forget my Senior year when Milan traveled to play Memphis Mitchell and after we lost, we (the band) had to be escorted out of the stadium by the police because of the Mitchell fans throwing beer bottles, trash, anything they could find at us. They threw this at our busses...it was a terrible experience. Another year when Melrose came and played at Milan. Their band played non-stop all 4 quarters, to the point our team couldn't hear on the field. They received something like 4 or 5 penatilites for the noise but never stopped playing. Their band was vulgar, making sexual movements on the field, cursing at our fans, and band. And it is these type of programs that give such negativity to the Memphis programs.???

I was the game administrator at every Mitchell playoff game since 1997 and I can tell you that did not happen. I always escorted the band and the team to their bus with extra security. I took great pride in ensuring a safe environment for the visiting team. As a matter of fact the principal from Milan sent me an email stating how well they were treated.

I also have been to Melrose and their Principal, Mr., McLain who was the AD then, and my self always discussed game safety. If any of our fans ever stepped out of line and I found out they would be banned for 1 year from attending any Mitchell games. I think Mitchell, Melrose, any Memphis school put safety first.

Thanks Gallileefor your reassurance. In my two trips to Melrose for playoff games, I was personably treatedvery hospitably. There was some friendly bantering back and forth but seemingly in fun without any true hostility. In 2005, a small kid threw a bottle at our team;one player suffered a cut. That was the only incident that I am aware of that was of any consequence. The Melrose fans are faithful and rabid but what true fans are not? Here's hoping for good weather, a huge turnout from both sides, a clean, hard fought game and victory to the better team.

GO BIG RED

I agree.

The whole band deal concerning playing the entire game and making "vulgar and sexual movements" - that's part of most show bands in Memphis. You come to expect it - it's all in fun. Melrose and Fairley played all during the game last year against Henry County. Fairley didn't play as much this year, though.

I think in certain neighborhoods you run the risk of getting stuff stolen from you car. That's just in certain areas. As far as personal safety inside the stadium, though, I don't believe it to be near as big of a deal as some say.

I love your post!! And I agree with everything you say! As a Patriot fan, traveling is simply something we do and do well! The schools you speak of; McKenzie, Milan, and others, simply do not travel more than 50 miles from the home campus all that often. Thus, they get extremely uncomfortable outside of their "little world!" On the other hand, Patriot fans have seen many more high schools stadiums over the past 20 years.......that being said, NONE can come close to the excitement and atmosphere at Orange Mound!!! Intimidating.......YES.......dangerous..........no more than any other place that we visit!! The people their are just as excited about their team as we are about ours. Plus, nowhere else will you find such a tailgate/buffet line with such tasty treats!! Hats off to you guys in Memphis and just chalk all of those insults up to ignorance!

P.S. Tell Melrose to get ready for Buses and Limos galore!!!!

You should be able to tell why people don't feel Memphis is safe if you feel the need to arrange for extra security. When I played football, we never had the need for security of any kind. I don't know though, never actually played football in Memphis, so I guess I don't have any place talking on this actually. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

The extra security is because in the playoffs teams from w. tn travel well and we were not use to visiting crowds that size. I just like to be pro active.

Why did this same topic get locked over on the Jr. high side of the message boards?

Good reason....I have seen things at rural games that could scare you.....you get fans at every school that just act ignorant. Saw cops throw a guy down and whack him with their nightsticks 5ft. from me at Dyersburg while watching DC-D'burg game. Not to mention the drunk rednecks....obscenities...the list could go on. One of the reason's I get a babysitter for my little girl for some games. If I wanted to see that mess I could find a redneck bar and go hang out.
