I'm really excited about Gibson Co. this year. We lose some key linemen, but we have back all players at the skill positions. Thing is, the Region is going to be TOUGH! We'll have to play extremely hard week in and week out and come away with an upset or two! Anything is possible and I hope the guys can get some success going this coming year!

Did a little bit of homework, thanks to several fans and the postseason On the Ball magazine.

Milan - Back for their senior season are RB Jobronski Gilbert (1495 yds, 31 TD) and LB Avery Williamson (117 tackles). The Bulldogs must replace their quarterback, but they return plenty of guys on both sides of the ball.

Westview - Demarcus Williams (904 yds, 10 TD) returns as one of the area's quickest backs, and QB Tanner Spencer has experience after stepping into the starter's spot. Defense looks to be better and stronger than last year.

Gibson Co. - Sherrod Johnson and Chase Arnold lead several talented returning players. QB Matt Smith took over last season and showed he can lead the Pioneers.

Dyersburg - TB Xavier Taylor (1411 yds, 25 TD) returns, as does most of the offensive line.

Crockett Co. - Darrius Bass (1193 yds, 13 TD) is back for his senior campaign. Austin Taylor is another young, promising back. The Cavalier defense loses its top two tacklers but returns its third in Jesse Stroud (55 tackles).

Haywood - QB Harold Watson gets things done in the air and on the ground. Several other Tomcats return, too, like starting running backs Michael Montgomery and Terry Grandberry. Some holes to fill up front on the offensive line.

Covington - Talented backs Dekeshion Phiffer and Isaiah Harris look to be a big part of the Charger offense this year.

Ripley - Must replace their quarterback and top running back. But Eric Scruggs was productive out of the backfield for the Purple Tigers, and some younger guys return on the offensive line who picked up starting experience last season.

Obion Central - The Rebels have a big void at QB. One possibility for replacement is leading receiver Patrick Haskins (927 yds, 12 TD). Top defensive player Blake Boyd (90 tackles) is back, as well.

Four district teams have familiar faces as new head coaches this year.

Covington - Marty Wheeler (Ripley HC)

Dyersburg - Bart Stowe (Haywood HC)

Haywood - Tim Seymour (Haywood AC)

Ripley - Al Pellegrino (Lake Co. HC)

  • 2 weeks later...

There is going to be lots of exciting football in 13AA this year.

My early predictions, by playoff class:

3A - Milan, Westview, Gibson Co.

4A - Dyersburg, Crockett Co., Haywood, Covington, Ripley, Obion Central

Dyersburg and Milan look ready for deep playoff runs.

Should be a great season in 13AA

GO TROJANS !!

I'm going to be fairly surprised if a team goes undefeated through district play. There are certainly some very good teams, but it's just that competition is so tough and physical every week. Just like 7AAA has been over the past several years, take away Dyer Co., add Milan and Westview. (Or when Milan, Westview and Huntingdon were in the same AA region.) But if somebody does, and a couple of teams have the talent and coaching to do just that, they should be playing in late November.

These teams will have a tough non-district schedule, too. Between Milan, Dyersburg and Westview, 8 of their 9 non-district opponents made the playoffs at least once in the past two seasons.

But with the tough and physical competition comes some of the area's top programs and most exciting football communities. Hard to beat a Friday night under the lights in Dyersburg, Milan, Alamo, Brownsville, Martin or Covington. The remaining three teams will be good for a few upsets, guaranteed.

I believe District 12 and 13 are two of the toughess Districts from top to bottom. Agree with the opportunity for upsets in either districts. Even though I don't agree with the way TSSAA has done this, it will make for an interesting year for "friday night lights"! It will be interesting to see how it all plays out at the end of the year.
