Saw Raul this weekend in Maryville. Spoke to him and he is not going anywhere. He said he will have a tough challenge ahead this next year. Graduates 6 seniors and is headed to the District with AE,Fulton,Union,Carter,Pigeon Forge, and Gibbs. HE said he is loving it in Gatlinburg and would only leave for a college job.

By the way he met with Coach Pearl on the possibilities of Coaching at UT and Coach Pearl said if he wanted the GA job that belong to Aaron Greene it could have been his. I asked him if reads Coacht and he admitted that he does from time to time. Agitator I told him what you said he responded like this" everyone is entitled to their opinion I know my kids enjoy playing for me and in a joking way told me if it was all about winning do you think I would have sat down my second leading scorer and best defender my first year in the semis of the district tournament after losing my best player. Risked a shot to play in the district championship to teach a young man a lesson. Says a lot to that post you had on MATURITY, HIGH MORALS, AND DISCIPLINE..

I was reading this thread and decided to join in because how close I am to the situation. Our family has had a kids play at the four different High schools here in Sevier County. For the past two years GP has been the best in our county. For about four years Pigeon Forge held that reign due to Mike Wright who is now the new head Coach at Oakland. I could see where GP's coach can rub people off the wrong way. He is way different to what we have been become accustomed to here in our county. He is full of energy and has a different style of coaching to what we had seen in our county for years. He would be considered a players /coach. Our nephew plays for Pigeon Forge and I guarantee if he had a chance to play for someone else in the county he would play for GP. Not because they win but because the Coach can relate to his players. PForge has a young coach who is as talented and disciplined as GP's coach but the kids have not responded to him as well. They are 15-42 in two years compared to GP 32-20. Coaching is an art and I believe it takes time and patience to become a good coach. From what I have seen I think he is doing a great job. I believe Pigeon Forge will turn it around this year as well.

To echo on what someone posted here I gained a lot of respect for Gp's coach when he sat out Mckinley Maples in the semi finals of the district tournament in his first year. It helped Pigeon Forge because it played GP without Maples and their best player Holzer, can't remember first name and gave Pigeon Forge the shot to play for a District Championship. A lot of maturity and discipline was shown here in his first year instead of looking the other way and trying to get a win.

As a fan of the county teams ( a little more for PFORGE!!haha) we like the fact we have a young coach and I am sure GP does too.

Raul is a great person and a great coach. He played at Mary ville College and learned under one of the best coaches in Tennessee under Randy Lambert so he is going to know the game and he is going to be a players coach! To me GP has a great young coach who cares about his players on and off the court. Class Act Man. Yes coaches get carried away in some games but you name me one coach who has never got carried away in at least one of his games and i would love to meet this person! /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />

Let's get this back on topic. Deadline for apps is up, does anyone know when the interview process will start? Anyone been contacted? Who are the front runners at this point? The only name that seems to be floating around is the guy from Cumberland Co.

I agree with DodgerSS, and apparently so does the administration at MoEast. Derek Creech is a finalist for the job and is one of five applicants being granted an interview. Good luck to Derek in the interview. Hopefully this young coach will get the opportunity that both Chris Gillies and Tracy Cloninger have already received. Derek would be a fine pick for the job.

Who are the other finalists? Have they interviewed anyone yet? What about Berquist, he has been there a long time, had to of learned a lot with Wright the last two years, is his name in the mix?

From the word going around, all 3 current assistant coaches applied for the job but were told they were not in the running. Not sure who the other four finalists are, but the interviews are all happening this week and possibly into early next week.

Not sure that Creech is even a serious candidate, definitely not a fianlists. All county employees must get an interview, board policy. Heard 8 were interviewing, 3 work in school system, so 5 other candidates. Hire will most likely come from other 5, only county employee with a shot is Berquist.

I would think Seveir Co. has been the best in county. East played PF, GP, and Sevier Co. beat PF and GP twice and lost twice to Sevier.

    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
    • An FYI: To see how an opponent has done against another opponent since 2001- go to the game by clicking on one of the teams. Click the G beside the game. For example, Milan: The info will show you the previous matchups and other info.
    • All these college signees went yo other schools for 3 years, were getting college offers then transferred to Bearden. It’s not like this staff did much to develop them.    The BBall coaches son and the Seymour transfer were some of the most talented QBs in the region, and you guys developed them into QBs who might complete one pass a game.
