Did Humboldt brealk any rules? I'm just asking. Not throwing stones.

The TSSAA rule clearly says that teams are not able to have more then 3 returning players from one school on the same spring/summer basketball team. Humboldt had about 8 returning players playing on the same team in Memphis. The team was known as the Jackson Heat. I was there taking pictures for a friend that writes a BB blog. I was stunned when I saw this because I knew the rule beforehand. I don't claim to be an expert on the TSSAA rules but this one seemed pretty clear to me. This is very unfair to all the other teams across the state of Tennessee. If I'm wrong I apologize. Just looking for clarification. Like i said I don't claim to be an expert on the TSSAA rules.

BTW, it was the memphis select classic 3. about 3 weeks ago in memphis. the games was at southwest tn cc. I wasn't going to post this but I just need to know for myself because this just doesn't seem right.

TSSAA Rule:

50 % Rule: Applies to basketball, baseball, and softball. Participation (includes practice) during the school year on a

non-school team prior to the school season by students that will play the following season on the high school team is

limited to 50% of the number of players required to play the game (3). Only the specified number of students

participating on a non-school team prior to the school season may be placed on the same high school roster the

following season. Those students cannot be interchanged on the school team roster.

This is a blatent violation, and I think if you have pictures and can prove the team had 8 Humboldt players on it, they should be turned in.

They either didn't no the rule or didn't care because they wore there Humboldt practice shorts with the Jackson heat jersey. I was at that tourney in Memphis. about 8 had the shorts on then they had about 4 more HB players with other shorts on.

It is not a violation this rule refers to teams that are put together PRIOR to the season meaning those 8 kids can no tplay on the same AAU or travel team beginning in August. this time period right now is considered AFTER the season. Humboldt did not break any rules

Thee AAU season is pretty much over by August. As a matter of fact the evaluation period for AAU is in July. Plus, school starts back in early August. I could be wrong but that just doesn't sound right.

I'm pretty sure this rule was put in palce because of AAU which is played in the spring/summer...long before August. It was put in place so a team from the same highschool copuldn't play together all summer....which would obviously be a competitive advantage.

AAU doesn't apply. It was designed to prevent Fall League teams from playing together with more than 3 players from each school. After the end of the basketball season players are fine until Day1 of school the following Fall. This also was set up to help deter teams from starting practice ahead of the deadlines under the guise of an AAU or Fall League team without their h.s. coach present.

Thanks for the clarification.

Sounds like the rule is pretty much meaningless then.

I guess I was wrong. I apologize. I really thought it applied to AAU as well.

I like the premise of the rule. It prevents a high school coach from starting practice at the start of school and having the basketball season run from August through March! The Knoxville area had a fall league that ran for several years that kicked off about the start of school and ended the weekend before official h.s. practice started. Our team practiced at least twice a week and played on the weekend once or twice. It was strictly "voluntary" though.

    • I've always been a football fan first and then if you have a band that's awesome. No question that DB has one of the best bands in the country and the whole region should attend at least one DB game just to see their band. I don't know if Nick Saban could come to Kingsport and build a football program that could match the Dobyns Bennett band's success. That said,as mentioned before, a couple of things would have to change in order for the Tribe to just win a state championship on the field.Besides a program that starts from the peewee teams and goes all the way to J Fred with all coaches and weight training { in time }on the same page. Sometimes it also takes a little luck like the 1998 Vols .There are a lot of great athletes at a lot of big schools around the state and just because you want something doesn't mean your going to build a program like Alcoa has. Yes,start at the bottom and have guys that are quality coaches teaching at every level is 100% the first step. Parents can make it a lot easier by getting their young athletes into an early start with conditioning and weights as well when they are old enough to lift.If your son is a man in the weight room before he gets to DB , then it won't take a "Dobbs" coach to make him competitive against other schools athletes when it comes to strength.
