Is "On the Ball" Magazine Still In Business?

It was a good publication, but 'free'? Nothing is free. Why would anyone make a publication and then give it away? What On the Ball relied on in the end was local advertising sales for every high school covered. If your school's area didn't sell any advertising, then they weren't covered. It was enough that the other teams in the district noticed that their rivals weren't covered. It's no fun getting accolades if you know the best of the best weren't included. You can't say we're only going to cover teams A, B and C but leave out D, E and F in our coverage. Even if they didn't generate any advertising. The other part of that equation is that the smaller, rural communities get hammered for donations and fundraisers. There's only so many advertising opportunities in these communities and they have to make decisions between On the Ball and signage on the fence for instance.

A statewide sponsor like TSSAA, Tennessee Farm Bureau or ............Walgreen's would help. Counting on local advertisers to support an out of county magazine was a little much to ask in my opinion. I do appreciate every thing OTB did while they were around.

    • I have no clue if Derek tried to talk some since into his dad or not about staying here. All he is going to accomplish is going from the oven to the frying pan. If I were the coach all Ale would freze over before I set back and watched one of my good players leave without a fight.
    • If this is true, South Gibson is taking a big chance. Passing on an experienced coach for a guy who has never coached at the high school level is a high risk move, especially in that district and region.
    • Dorian Eskridge was HVA's best back, 2011
    • Jo Byrns was a very solid team last year. Imo, I thought they presented the biggest challenge for us on our path to winning it all last year. I expect them to be in the conversation and one of the final few teams playing in Murfreesboro
    • I'm not sure you understand anything if you think DB's career and AD's career are comparable.  This is a terrible take.   Not to slight AD, He was a good player and he got better as he matured after high school.   But Desean had over 8,000 yards in HS and was a two-time Mr. Football.
