If it rains all week as the weatherman is predicting, you can throw all these scores out the window.....

Can I get some syrup and butter with that waffle? .... :thumb:

Ok ateam ... the caveat is duly noted ... sooooooooooooooooooo ... why don't you give us some scores to compensate those rain soaked, wet, muddy conditions ... just to cover your bases.

We would HATE to throw out scores just because of "a wittle ole wain" now wouldn't we?

Ok Memphis area high school football fans we are in Week 7 which means we are past the half way mark and we are getting into the heart of most district games. By now we think we know who is for real and who isn't. As I said last week, some teams remain an enigma. The following are what I consider to be the Big Games in the Memphis and surrounding area for this week. You know the drill by now. My list is as follows:

Bolton [D-14, 6A] @ Millington [D-14, 6A]

Cordova [D-14, 6A] @ Arlington [D-14, 6A]

Wooddale [D-15, 6A] vs Ridgeway [D-15, 5A] @ Halle

White Station [D-16, 6A] @ Melrose [D-16, 5A]

Mitchell [D-26, 5A] vs Memphis East [D-16, 5A] @ Fairgrounds

ECS [West DII - A] @ CBHS [West DII-AA] on Thursday, Oct. 8

My picks are as follows:

Millington wins by a score of 28-7

Arlington wins by a score of 17 - 14

Wooddale wins by a score of 24-21 (I honestly don't have a feel for either of these two teams)

White Station wins by a score of 35 - 28

Memphis East wins by a score of 42 - 35 (This is a do or die game for East)

CBHS wins by a score of 21 - 17

Well ... that's it for me. What do you guys think?

By the way @ BlackhavenSenator ... I already know ... Whitehaven will beat Sheffield. (Respect Da Haven!)

My Picks:

Mill 21- Bolton 14 close one

Cordova 24- Arlington 21 close one

Ridge 28- Woodale 14 uneducated guess

WSHS 34- Melrose 28 uneducated guess

East 35 - Mitchell 28 uneducated guess

CBHS 28 - ECS 17

Greetings from the HAVEN!... first off thanks for the shout out! Yes we will be playing Sheffield for Homecoming thursday and let's just say I hope I can see some of My Freshmen and Sophs get some REPS :roflol:

As for my Picks...

Bolton [D-14, 6A] @ Millington [D-14, 6A]

I'll ride with MCHS over Bolton 20-7

Cordova [D-14, 6A] @ Arlington [D-14, 6A]

Cordova in the "upset" over Arlington 24-17... Watch out for a big play or two from Ryan Heaston as the game changer!

Wooddale [D-15, 6A] vs Ridgeway [D-15, 5A] @ Halle

In this Battle of East Memphis I have to go with Ridgeway.... This pick may change, I gotta ask my sources about Wooddale to see if they're real or not LOL!

White Station [D-16, 6A] @ Melrose [D-16, 5A]

Now let me tell U what I need to happen then what I actually think will happen...

Melrose comes out on top led by Eric Watson they play a grind it out control the clock game winning 24-17 :thumb:

HOWEVER...

I see WSHS coming out on top mainly because of Melrose turnovers and mental Mistakes WSHS 42 Melrose 20... My legit pick :thumb:dry.gif Melrose we need yall Help Mayne please beat WSHS

Mitchell [D-26, 5A] vs Memphis East [D-16, 5A] @ Fairgrounds

Mitchell barely beats East 40-34

ECS [West DII - A] @ CBHS [West DII-AA] on Thursday, Oct. 8

If CBHS gives the Ball to #45 this will be a semi blowout 31-10 CBHS

That's my story and I'm stickin to it until Wednesday :thumb:

BlackhavenSenator:

As I stated before the WH vs WSHS game ... that was a criticle game and had playoff implications all over it. We lost ... but we still control our own destiny. I'm unsure of all of the implications but my suspicion is that WH CAN NOT AFFORD a loss to ANY of the District 16 5A schools. Regardless of what happens with WSHS. WH has to Take Care of Business the rest of the way ... and we have all three of those dangerous 5A schools back to back to end our season. TCB Whitehaven! .... TCB!

RESPECT DA HAVEN!

Cam 6,

Why do you think that Millington vs Bolton game will be so close? I know that comparing scores can get you in trouble, But from the outside looking in It looks as though Cordova is a much better football team than Bolton and Millington dispatched of Cordova rather easily. Why do you think the Trojans will struggle more with the MildCats?

Go Trojans!

Millington 27 Bolton 7

Arlington 28 Cordova 14

East 30 Mitchell 20

CBHS 17 ECS 14

Ridgeway 27 Woodale 12

Ok. Purely hypothetical. If it is raining at game time:

Millington 14-13 over Bolton.

Cordova 13-7 over Arlington. Only outcome that is changed. Rain puts a big hurtin' on the Tigers passing game!

Ridgeway 18-13 over Wooddale.

White Station 28-7 over Melrose.

Mitchell 13-7 over East. Again, passing game.

CBHS 31 - 24 No change, turf field and thurs night!

Ok ... your No rain scores are as follows:

Millington 21-14 - Bolton historically gives Millington a good game.

Arlington 20 - 14 - Cordova's speedy little tailback can take it for 6 any given play and is quite elusive.

Ridgeway 28-20 - Really a toss up in my mind.

White Station 42 - 20 - Spartans put up 35 on MUS, most by any team this season I belive.

Mitchell 27 - 20

CBHS 31 - 24

If it rains all week as the weatherman is predicting, you can throw all these scores out the window.....

You are entitled to your opinion, but Arlington can run the ball too. According to their website, they have thrown for 1507 yards and rushed for 1143 through 7 games. It's not like they are one-dimensional....just sayin'...

Rob,

I think Bolton is down this year considering past seasons. They are smaller and appear to be less talented from the naked eye. I hope your prediction is correct but i give Coach Welch a great deal of respect. He does a great job with his schemes defensively to give the opponent fits. He showed this last week against a passing team that had much sucess against other teams. arlington was probably the better team but Bolton hung in there and made a game of it. I think he will do much of the same against Millington. Those kids are also playing for their playoff lives and the Bolton Millington game always seems to be close. Last week i felt the defense was the key against Cordova because the offense always has success against Cordova and this week i think the offense vs. Bolton defense will be the key matchup.

BMack.

That is the very reason. Rain will make a team one-dimensional. Cordova "D" is pretty good against the run. And those rushing yards were gained when mixed in with a leathal passing game. Take that away and Cordova can focus on stopping the run. Plus a sloppy field will even hinder the running game.

Not to mention what a wet football will do to the turnover stats!

The Cordova I saw was one that struggled against the run, and that was in the rain. They key is to get outside of them or trap them. Running straight at them will not get it done.

    • I've always been a football fan first and then if you have a band that's awesome. No question that DB has one of the best bands in the country and the whole region should attend at least one DB game just to see their band. I don't know if Nick Saban could come to Kingsport and build a football program that could match the Dobyns Bennett band's success. That said,as mentioned before, a couple of things would have to change in order for the Tribe to just win a state championship on the field.Besides a program that starts from the peewee teams and goes all the way to J Fred with all coaches and weight training { in time }on the same page. Sometimes it also takes a little luck like the 1998 Vols .There are a lot of great athletes at a lot of big schools around the state and just because you want something doesn't mean your going to build a program like Alcoa has. Yes,start at the bottom and have guys that are quality coaches teaching at every level is 100% the first step. Parents can make it a lot easier by getting their young athletes into an early start with conditioning and weights as well when they are old enough to lift.If your son is a man in the weight room before he gets to DB , then it won't take a "Dobbs" coach to make him competitive against other schools athletes when it comes to strength.
    • Dyersburg scrimmaged South Gibson last week
    • A complete cultural change happened at Greeneville and the administration and community opened up their checkbooks.  What a lot of people don't know is Ballard was Zeller's OC for many years and stopped coaching for two years because Zeller and Ballard didn't see eye to eye on some things.  Zeller lead Greeneville to it's first ever Semi Final appearance in 2000 and lost 28-12 at Maryville and had them in the Quarter Finals in 2002 and 2003.  Z was a great coach but lost some control when it came to making workouts mandatory. (He learned from that Mistake and it was at LC when i coached with him.).  Z was let go going into my Senior Year and was replaced by Steve McCurry who was the one that turned the program around.  Steve had won a 4a state championship at AC Reynolds in Asheville and made the administration completely redo the weight room with new equipment, had a football period at the end of the school day to lift, started devil camp, and brought in coaches like Danny Bentley (Still the OL coach), Ballard as the OC, Cody Baugh (QB coach and still there), and even Spradlen who is Greeneville's head coach now as the DB's Coach.  McCurry only coached for two seasons at Greeneville and took a team that had a losing record the year before and finished my Senior Year making it to the Quarters and having a 10-3 record and then followed it up with a Semi Final appearance the next year with an 11-3 record and back to back conference championships.  Loved McCurry to death but the recession hit and the story i heard was he was still buying new equipment for the team that the Principal didn't authorize and his response was "I don't answer to you and only to Niswonger and Bewley" (Two huge donors).  That was it for him and they Promoted Ballard shortly after that.   Greeneville had always been relevant ever since the the late 70's under Coach Fred Sorrell's.  Since Sorrell's took over in 1977 Greeneville overall winning percentage is over 76%.  The biggest reason people might not have thought Greeneville was "Good" until Ballard was Greeneville always played up Classification wise and could never get over the hump. (When there were 3 classifications we played 3a, when it went to 5 we played 4a).  Greeneville is the largest its ever been with 953 students and where playing teams 2 or 3 times there size back in the day (I had a little over 800 kids in the school when i graduated in 2008).  Other teams always would know they would be sore after a game but depth took over and never won a Championship until Greeneville played in the classification the TSSAA actually assigned them. You had names like Dustin Moore (1993 Mr Football for 3a and who Phillip Fulmer said was one of the greatest athletes he ever recruited), James "Mud Turtle" Mayes, Brigham Lyons, Byron Gillespie, Frankie Debusk (National Champion Qb at Furman with GQ), Jasmine Lowery, Cody Baugh, The Greenway Brothers, Joe Watson (Furman), etc.  Now the cultural is from the Pee Wee league up and you grow up as a young kid wanting to wear the Greene and White.  Here is a really good link when it comes to anything Greeneville Football related. https://greenevillefootball.com/   I also don't coach anymore.  Z told me i was to smart with how the school systems are ran these days and ended up going into real estate in Knoxville which has been a great decision for my life.
    • Yes, they will. I'm wondering what kinds of strides Sale Creek will make heading into the second season under Coach Fitz.
    • No yellow stripes on the rug last night. Biggest crowd I’ve seen at 825 since the alco debacle.
