Why doesn' Lawrence Co. play Summertown and Loretto? They are in the same county,it's a traditional rivalry, and they have owned both schools as far as winning goes.Loretto and summertown's 1A status isn't a factor,LCHS plays Moore Co. and Wayne Co.(both 1A)? What's the deal?a(sniff, sniff)That old superiorty complex? The LCHS boys are playing Summertown in the Richland Christmas classic.

LCHS and Summertown students have proven several times that they can't co-exist in the Summertown gym. Too close to each other and immaturity takes over, for both schools. LCHS has offered to play at LCHS and split the gate but Summertown hasn't accepted since there would not be a return game at their gym. Can't say I blame them for that but both schools are missing out on a huge gate.

Loretto said last year that they would not play us this year and they aren't. First time in the schools' histories that they haven't played. That's a shame and, again, both schools are missing out on huge gates. There is no good reason that they aren't playing each other.

It seems to boil down to factors that do not include the players. Win or lose I think the majority of the players for all three schools would like to have these games on the schedule(I think). My gosh, these kind of in-county rivals bring fans to the game that may not come otherwise. I for one wish they were both on the schedule for a home and away. The gate $$$ would help all involved. As far as the players go, so many are friends away from school and have been for years. Sorry guys and gals, the powers that be are watching out for you!!! hee hee.

LHS stopped playing LCHS because the LCHS crowd got out of hand every year. There's supporting your team, and taking it too far. This rivalry used to be fun, but over the years it stopped being fun. If you took a poll of the players on whether the players feel safe, I guarantee you the majority would say they don't feel safe on the court.

Thats a bunch of crap. All three schools have gotten out of line from time to time but as far as I know no one was ever in danger. School officals from all three schools were always on top of things. The fear you talk about might just be the fear of losing. These three schools need to be playing each other. As bad as each school needs the money they could save on the bus ride plus could cash in on a big gate.

It doesn't matter to me either way.I've heard all the reasons mentioned here plus that LCHS was seeking stronger competition. I can say this however;1) if I were Summertown,Under no circumstances would I play 2 games at L'burg 2) If I were Loretto'under no circumstances would I play someone whose students were allowed on the floor or who touched my players.3) as far as the behavior of the fans, the TSSAA handbook is crystal clear."Fan behavior is the responsibility of the Principals of the schools involved or his designee regardless of where the game is being played"

Hey Hawse,

not sure what you mean by allowing the students on the floor unless you're talking about them standing at the bottom of the bleachers. if i do recall correctly, last year at the "barn" Loretto fans were out on the court at the end of the boys game. either way in county rivalries are good for the monday morning quarterbacks, the family arguements, the workplace disagreements. please, please bring them back...who cares if things get a little hostile. i dare say no one has ever been hurt due to a rivalry game in Lawrence County...but I may be wrong. at least being an LCHS supporter we can feel good about the fact we didn't break the tradition.

Why are all the elementary schools in Lawrence Co. able to play each other with no problems whatsoever yet the high schools can't ? If you want to say it's competition and blame the small schools,That's ok.Go ahead and enjoy playing on Monday nights and traveling to Moore Co.and filling out the rest of your schedule By all indications it's going to be quite sometime before these schools play again (if ever).I'm sure there are issues besides the ones raised here(there always are).
