I'll be honest, I don't follow either of the programs closely. I have no idea about who could fill the spot from the assistant staff, I was just making the observation that a lot of schools overlook those coaches and go for a recognizable outsider.

I heard rumor today that the powers to be have their sights set on Brandon Reed to come back, anyone else heard such? What kind of possibility is this do you think?

church hill connection...sounds about right. reed is a good person, but i don't think he has the right personality for it. needs a strong willed person to handle that. besides...has he been coaching AT ALL?

Brandon has been an assistant at Greeneville High. I have heard that he is very happy down there and probably would not return.

Thank you for clarifying! Again, he is a great person(what I know of him). What does volunteer have coming back next year? Freshman, etc? What about Cherokee? Anybody know?

The latest I heard was that if Reed turned it down, Barnett is on the shortlist.

who is barnett? has he played college or been a head coach at a school? i have not noticed any postings or anything. if they don't post...how can they get possible very qualified candidates.

I think he is the assistant coach. Not sure where he played himself, but from what I hear he is a pretty good coach. If I hear anymore about him I'll update.

He played at S. East and Tusculum. Hard worker and dedicated student of the game. He would be a fine replacement.

why would you hire someone that was part of the problem? I mean...he may not have been the main problem, but he had to have input on how to treat players, etc. At that level you need to make a SPLASH or homerun hire, to get the community of Church Hill and Surgoinsville excited about basketball again. SPeaking with a lot of the community...they are about done with volunteer period. It doesn't seem like the sporting events are "the place to be" And if any area needs a boost positively, that one does.

I do not know much about Barnett, but in reply to your question of why would they hire part of the problem: I think Whitt is a pretty dominant figure, I am not sure how much input his assistants have inside the locker room. From what I have seen, I doubt Whitt would change his tactics for anyone (I happen to like that quallity in a coach, so long as it is a good faith effort, in other words I like a coach who will stick to his guns).

 

On the other hand, I too think an outside hire makes more sense at the moment. It just seems to me that Volunteer would do themselves more good if they hired a reputation in the form of a publicly attractive replacement.

I would have to agree with this description of Coach Barnette. He's a great guy and would do a fine job.
