TSSAA did Overton wrong in baseball

For years, Overton was in District 11 with Independence, Brentwood, Franklin, Ravenwood, etc. Overton has been a baseball power as have those listed above. This made for a great baseball district, great competition, and really lifted the game of all involved.

The TSSAA made the decision to move Overton to District 12. Now, they are with Hillwood, Hunters Lane, Antioch, Cane Ridge, McGavock, and Glencliff...and, frankly, it is embarassing. Not only is there very little competition (McGavock is ok) but it really hurts Overton because of the level of play. It is very difficult to play at this level for several games -- then play Mt Juliet, Ravenwood, Hendersonville, or Dyer County, or Clarksville, etc. It is hard to cultivate the mental level during district competition that is needed to play the better teams as well as post-season.

I don't know all of the reasons, maybe there are some good ones, but they ruined a good thing. Overton is 10-0 in district with all 10 games being 5 inning run rule games. Not only is there little competition, but that is also 20 innings of baseball they didn't get to play. It also is not nearly as enjoyable going to the ballpark

This isn't a post about how good Overton is at all. This is saying that Overton would be better off in a tougher district. Maybe they'd win less games...but they'd be a better team. Coach has done a good job scheduling a tough out of district schedule...but it still can't equal the district they were in.

Anyone have further insight into what factors went into this decision? For whatever reason, Hillsboro went from the Metro district 12 TO the Williamson County district 11.

How's the competition in other sports? Football, basketball, etc...

I do realize it isn't all about baseball...but that is what this board subsection is about. Overton also won the football district and was 1 or 2 regular season in basketball, I believe.

I guess I'm just asking -- what was so wrong that it had to be changed so radically? And if it was so wrong, why Hillsboro (which is North of Overton) in the Williamson district 11?

The biggest money maker for the TSSAA is football. That is why the decision was made. Hillsboro requested to be put in the Williamson County district. I do not believe Overton requested that. I would of loved to have seen them stay. It would of made our district alot more competitive this year. We have 3 really good teams (Indy, Ravenwood, Brentwood). The rest of the teams are not very good this year.

Overton will be ok come postseason time. I hope Indy meets up with them for the Region Championship. We played some great games last year. Who is your top pitcher this year?

Where is the school located, relative to the schools in their old and new districts?

Overton is about 3 miles further south toward the district than Hillsboro. Overton is about 1 mile from the Williamson County line, maybe 3-4 miles from Brentwood High School. Geographically, it fits in district 11.

Overton has much more travel in the new district than the old, in my opinion.

Overton has traditionally had a main #1 pitcher, Richie Goodenow, Ben Johnson, etc. This year, though, they have 3 that are pretty much interchangeable for the #1 (Sutherland, Culross, Humphreys -- the latter two being Juniors). That sets up very well for tournament play, of course, maybe not quite as good in a one game set if you had a dominant #1.

    • Im more of a Basketball follower than football and like I said we play what we have, there is no going and recruiting or even talking kids into transferring…..and to rebut about Memphis teams in finals I’ve watched Memphis East and Penny Hardaway with the enrollment of a single A team play up and dominate any and all challengers for years! They aren’t the only ones either Mike Miller and son at Germantown put together that super team a couple years ago that ran through the rest of the state! Other teams from Memphis or Chatt or Nash or any large populated area pop up and are relevant out of nowhere every year because they get an influx of talent be it from a new coach or AAU affiliations it happens in football also just like any other sport! I hope these two schools that close join together and get to play the team you support, then you may see it differently! I find it funny some of you think recruiting and resources don’t matter . The county schools get very little funding also but you don’t want to get me started on that part!
    • In a total classless move, Coach Simmons once again shows his true colors. Waits till the day after school is out to let everyone know he is leaving. Fails up to a community college job after a lackluster 2 year span at GH. And do not tell me about the state run that saved a sub .500 season and plenty of whippings by Cookeville and Lebanon.  Looks like the girls job at GH is cursed. Terrible MS program/coaches feeding what is turning out to be a joke of a HS team.
