Depends on the Coach and what kind of assistants he has. Prime example is R'dale under Rankin. Had one losing season, his FIRST. After that it was winning all the way to 4 gold balls, and a number of silver ones.

Editted to add the following.

Now look at Oakland for an example. Coach Mac came in and won a Gold Ball his first year with a team that only had about 4 wins the year before.

If a Coach is really good and the talent is there, the fans should see improvement in 3 years. If not then the school should look elsewhere before tenure comes into play.

The key ingredient is talent, followed by coaching, talent, support, talent, talent and talent. Another key component is whether the school district is an open district and how many of the students stay at their previous school. There are a lot of factors and they're different fo each school.

That said, Coach Mac came into the perfect storm of circumstances: Community and Admninstrative support, talent, experience, schedule. Everything came together nicely in 2008, combined with his coaching know how, and ability to narrow the focus of his teams into a winning effort, its ended up nicely for Oakland. Oakland kind of has a thing for winning Gold Balls with coaches in the first year, 3 of the last 5 head coaches have done it, I dont know if any coach in the state can say that

I agree that talent is a huge part of winning but I think a good detailed coaching staff makes it work...
