compusatman
No ALL STATERS from the Big 8.
1271
Does All-State mean you are the best at your position in the state? If so I didn't see anyone in the Big 8 who qualified. Comp if you noticed someone I have no problem being corrected.
compusatman
I am not in conflict with the TSWA's choices. It's just sad that we have zero qualifiers. It's been a long time since we had nothing.
1271
Quite a bit of raw talent in Big 8,especially at SHHS. I just don't think coaching pushes or develops these players to All-State level. Theres no George Quarels in the Big 8. No Mike Turner either. Well considering a lot of the talent you see come into places like Alcoa, Maryville, Smyrna, and other areas are transfer students going to the best program. Want to win a state championship, come to this program. Kids excited to be part of a program that is already established is there. Take the Carmicheal at Greeneville, you put him on DB or Boone and you have a completely different ball team. You have already established players who are pretty good, and you also have players who come in because they know they are good and they want to make a program better. No open enrollment in the Big 8, too many small communities who are big on football but don't have programs built in... yet. I know DB and SH recently through their hats in to pick and choose pee wee players with their Jr. Vols stuff or whatever, but you also have places like South and Boone who are getting their pee wee programs on the same page as them. The Big 8 is a competitive football place that, for lack of a better word, has not found a way to win the big games yet. Against each other, we all know one another and you see tough teams. Down the line, it's a different way of thinking. I certainly know that last years DB team could beat almost any team from West TN, Middle TN would be a huge shoot out, but they just didn't have things go their way this past year in round 2. I know for a fact that South and Boone could beat most teams in West and Middle TN, but the Knoxville block is where most of the champions come from. The Big 8 has some great football, some of the best across the state, but most of the beating up has been done on each other because we all live in a competitive place. Some of the best fans in the world in the Big 8, all across the board.

A lot is statistic driven if you play a skill position, and even those stats are enhanced when you play on a really good team. There are all-state caliber players on bad teams that don't get the recognition because they aren't viewed as winners. How do you justify Downs and Crowder not making all-state when the University of Tennessee,Rivals, and Scout.com would say otherwise? Who do you blame? The Viking coaching staff, the QB, the entire team, or all of them? I would like to see the all-state list include the season record for the player's team. It might be interesting.
