Portland’s Scheduling Backfires

Coach Aric's attempt at scheduling a 1A school to get a win has backfired. Little ole 1A Clarksville Academy came into Edgar Johnson Stadium and beat the laughable panthers 7-3 on homecoming. Maybe next year they can schedule one of the local middle school teams. It’s officially official, Portland football is ___________. You can fill in the blank. Portland should seriously consider dropping football or either move to 8 man football and request special permission to play with 11. The folks in Portland are naïve and the principal, athletic director, and former athletic director are leading the charge of stupidity. Together they have hired & fired coaches passing the blame on to them instead of taking off their blinders and stepping into what everyone else sees and that is reality! Seriously its embarrassing.

Did not see this one coming as it seemed Portland had been getting better. This loss is a setback to the rebuilding effort by Coach Aric and his staff. To only manage 3 points against a 1A school, especially after looking better the previous weeks will certainly cause the folks in Portland to be scratching their heads. I just hope that Coach Aric sticks with his current offense and does not try to start making changes in the middle of the season. That did'nt work for him at BHS or Wilson Central.

Just curious...What is the reality you speak of? how would you fix it?... besides quiting football; dont be a typical coacht poster who complains but has no clue how to fix the problems you pretend to have solutions to.

One of the issues that faces portland football right now is interest and participation out of the student athletes. There are many good athletes that either quit football when they get to high school or drop out of the program somewhere along the line. I know there is attrition with every program but it seems worse than usual here. I do have to think the future is looking better for panther football. There are some sophomores making an impact on the varsity level, a solid freshman class and two solid middle school teams feeding the high school.

Yes, they may have some talented freshmen and middle school players but look at what they play against. Sumner County is an open county so players can choose to go where they please. Station Camp draws form KDDC and Station Camp Middle. Hunter draws from KDDC and Hunter Middle. Gallatin draws from Rucker-Stewart and Shafer Middle while White House is left to draw from 1 middle school. Portland draws from two middle schools but they are weak. Yes, Portland West Middle is having a good year this year but when you combine the other Sumner County Middle schools against the two Portland middle schools, there is no comparison. Until Portland drops a classification, they won't be able to compete.

Reality is the male athletic programs at Portland are not very good. Football, Basketball & Baseball in the last 3-5 years have been horrendous. If you add last years win total of those three sports you may equal 15 or maybe less. Win total vs teams in their classification is under 10. Portland folk, principal, assistant principal, athletic director, and former athletic director pass the buck on and point the blame elsewhere. They are niave when the REALITY is they are not very good. Can it be more blunt and to the point??? People who grew up in Portland usually don't leave town. Why? Because they are so niave that they cannot function in the real world. 95% of the teachers went to PHS. They don't see what everyone else sees. The best thing about Portland is leaving town.

There are no fixes. Portland male athletics is doing more harm then good. They are putting young men through 4 years of losing. All they know how to do is lose. They will then take that 4 years of losing mentality and carry it over in to their adulthood. They will be fine with a losing mentality forever because that is all they know how to do or they will blame it on something else and never be accountable for themselves. That is the cold hard truth. Drop athletics and use that money to pump in the academic programs which are the lowest in the county. They can then use that education to do more good in society.

The fact is Portland is now drawing from 2 middle schools just like Gallatin, Hendersonville,Beech, and Station Camp. Since the spilt, the combined records of the two Portland Middle schools is 24 and 18. That is a winning percentage of 57%. The only teams they play are the ones that feed GHS, BHS, HHS, SCHS, and WHHS. Not saying they are world beaters, but saying they are weak is a false statement.
