The biggest adjustment that I have seen from high school to college is the bat. If a kid cannot hit good strong pitching in high school they will not be able to hit in college. However, most kids will get a stronger arm and through reps their defense will improve 50% or more. IMO, you can teach an athlete to play defense but you cannot teach them to hit.

Jab07 I never said anything about his hitting, did I? That is you getting mad when someone speaks about their pitching ability. Yes J. Sheffield will make alot of highschool kids look bad because he can throw mid 90's. But if you look at any time he goes up against a good hitting team he loses. As I said before, this past summer he got killed each time he pitched in team USA games. He is not ready for minor league I don't care what anybody say's, that is my opinion. I don't proclaim to be some expert, just somebody that has seen alot of Tullahoma games and has his own idea.

The problem now is that MLB scouts only look at mph. They feel that they can teach someone to add movement to the ball and hit their spots but they cannot teach someone to throw 90+. One MLB scout said that he could get fired if he signed a kid throwing 84mph with great movement and they went south but no one would say anything if he signed a 6'5", 215lb LHP that throws 90+ and they are a bust. It's unfortunate but today everyone is in love with the radar gun.

Finally, someone with some sense. He's not tall, so he needs to find some movement other than a curve. My son knows him off the field, say's he is not the same as on field. I have said all along he is not ready for MLB draft. Maybe a year or two, but people think I am the devil for saying it.

Well look at his stats in the perfect game tournaments. So how can you base everything from team USA? Considering he was only a 16 year old sophomore. And as a fielder, he has more range at ss then any high school player in tenn. So you say you have seen a lot of tullahoma games, but obviously you were not paying attention. I am not saying there is no room for improvement, but give credit where credit is due!

MLB scout look at velo no doubt , they also look at what they feel the kid will be when he is 24. In my opinion, the older sheffield boy throws hard and is athletic... the minors will take him and see what they can make of him.. they might make him a reliever they might try to make him a starter, they may cut him after three years....

 

One thing that will hurt him is his height. MOST mlb and minor league pitchers are over 6'2 and that's becoming the short end. it does not matter how hard you throw at the minor league level if you do not have deception with off speed and movement you will not go far.

 

I am sure this Sheffield player is very good, I have seen him play, but in my mind he needs to go to college first.... if he goes straight to the minors it could get ugly, fast.....

My 2 cents on Jordan Sheffield. I'm a life long Tullahoma resident. I grew up with the daddy and played ball with Travis, graduated with the uncle. Jordan is a better hitter than pitcher,in my opinion. Tullahoma's 1st game vs spring hill, Jordan got pulled out pretty early 3rd or 4th inning. My opinion he should go to Vanderbilt. But if he gets picked in the 1st round it's hard to turn 4 or 3 million dollars down.Tomorrow mourning is going to make or break the kid. Tullahoma plays mater dai at 11:30 in North Carolina. Or Justus will pitch I don,t know.

I'm referring to Jordan, not his younger brother. He has played every position for Tullahoma. And he is best suited at third or OF, when not pitching.

Will be shocked if either one ever steps foot on Vanderbilt's campus to play. Both will/should be drafted in top 3 rounds. It's near impossible to turn down that money for no future guarantee. There is no job you can have that pays you that much that quickly. Be a mistake not to take the money if you are taken that early.

Well I hope they go to college. How many kids from around here get drafted, go off and get injuried or bust. Then they never go to college and end up with nothing. If they can make it work, I wish them luck and hope for the best. YOU CAN NEVER LOSE A GOOD EDUCATION!!
