FRANKLIN – Eleven Midstate schools entered Friday’s opening rounds of the state dual wrestling championships, but only three remained in the championship bracket after the first day.

Beech, Wilson Central and Father Ryan will all be moving on to compete in the finals or semifinals on Saturday while Summit, McGavock, Siegel, Martin Luther King, Forrest, Greenbrier, Brentwood Academy and Montgomery Bell Academy all fell short in Friday’s matches.

Wilson Central and Beech and moved on to the semifinals in the Class AAA bracket of the event, which is being held at Williamson Ag/Expo Center.

Beech got there with a 36-30 win over Dobyns-Bennett and a 44-28 victory over Heritage to earn its first trip to the semifinals. For coach Jeff Roberts it’s an especially sweet moment for his group of seniors.

“These seniors have made it four straight years to the state tournament so it’s only fitting that we give them the sending off party they deserve,†Roberts said.

Wilson Central also advanced to the semifinals with a commanding 67-6 win over Houston and a 46-29 victory over Knox Halls. Wilson Central coach John Kramer said what happens on Saturday is all on his players’ shoulders.

“It’s up to them,†Kramer said. “They’ve got to get a good night’s sleep and come in in a good frame of mind and get after it.â€

In the Division II bracket Father Ryan was the only Midstate team to advance with wins over Briarcrest and McCallie.

After finishing state runner-up last year coach Pat Simpson hopes to take the next step in 2015.

“You’ve got to get there first,†Simpson said. “Hopefully we will figure out how to win it (Saturday) night.â€

In Class A/AA, first-time competitor Greenbrier fell just short of advancing, losing to Greeneville 38-34 in the opening round.

“We had a couple kids that seemed a little nervous to start the match, but I think their nerves as the match continued kind of went away,†coach Josh Reynolds said.

Siegel won its their first match in Class AAA, taking down Tennessee High 51-16 before falling to Bradley Central 71-6 in the quarterfinals.

The Class AAA championship semifinals will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday. Finals in all three classes will begin at 7 p.m.

Hixson Advances To A-AA Duals Final With Impressive Wins

FRANKLIN – The Hixson Wildcats have finished third in the TSSAA Class A-AA State Duals wrestling tournament for the past four years, but they won’t have to worry about that monkey any longer as they won two matches here at the Williamson County Agricultural Expo Center Friday night and will face defending champ Pigeon Forge for the top prize Saturday night.

The Wildcats, improving to 29-4 overall, were never really challenged as they cakewalked past Forrest by a 57-21 final in the first match before steamrolling Greeneville in the semifinals, 57-14.

Pigeon Forge was equally impressive with an 83-0 shutout over Martin Luther King in the opener before defeating Alcoa, 44-28, in the semifinals.

Alcoa had advanced with an impressive 46-23 win over Notre Dame.

Hixson lost to the Greene Devils two years ago and Wildcat coach Garrick Hall made sure that his kids didn’t forget it. Only four current Wildcats were part of that loss two years ago, but the veteran coach got his point across in all capital letters and they responded accordingly.

“I felt like we owed them from two years ago and I surely didn’t want the same thing to happen,†Hall said while taking a deep breath shortly after the second match had ended.

“I had to remind them of what happened, but they were fired up and ready to go. There are times when it’s hard to tell what they’ll do as they’re still so young, but at least we won’t finish third again.

“I’m pretty serious most of the time, but we played dodgeball Thursday afternoon to relax a little. But I’m really proud of these guys as they wrestled hard tonight. I’m not satisfied yet, but I’m tired of finishing third,†he added.

Chris Nicholson, Dylan Bargerstock, Brody Gregory, Jacob Newman, Konnor Ziegler, Isaac Yates, Cederick Harris, Jonas Shackleford and Landon Goforth all had pins in the win over Forrest while Truman Ross and Ryan Turner joined teammates Gregory, Newman and Yates with pins against Greeneville.

Alcoa jumped on Notre Dame from the start, winning the first four matches and five of the first six to lead 28-6 after the match at 113 pounds.

Grant Speer had a pin at 106 and Luke Mullin won with a technical fall at 120, but by the time Alcoa forfeited to Packy Mullin and Noah Bankston, it was already decided.

Notre Dame coach felt like his kids somewhat panicked with Alcoa’s fast start.

“They built some good momentum early and it kind of snowballed from there,†Mullin said after a post-match talk with his kids.

“It may have been a better match had it been a little closer early, but they executed and we didn’t. Alcoa has a solid team and I’m sure that we’re better than what we showed tonight. I just hope we can come back and do a little better tomorrow,†the veteran coach added.

The Fighting Irish face Martin Luther King in the first match at 9 a.m. with the winner facing Greeneville in the consolation semis.

Notre Dame is certainly no stranger to this tournament as they finished runner-up to Hixson in 2009 after winning it all the previous three years.

Saturday’s championship match will begin at 7 p.m. (CST).

Having these smaller schools separated for duals is beneficial to the sport but I sense that a couple of these young men would love to join in with that bigger 32 man bracket in coming weeks. Maybe they all can one day,,,, IF everyone came to an agreement to separate out team points by division and let there be a One and only True State-Wide Champ per weight class?!?!?! Edited by Sommers

Hixson Drops GHS Wrestling In State Semis

FRANKLIN - The Greeneville wrestling team will not be wrestling in a third straight Class A/AA State Duals Tournament finals.

The Greene Devils won their opening match of the tournament over Greenbrier Friday afternoon, but then suffered at 57-14 loss to Hixson later in the evening at the Williamson County Expo Center.

"You come down here with a goal in mind and when you don't achieve that goal it is heartbreaking," Greeneville coach Randy Shelton said. "(Hixson) Coach (Garrett) Hall has a great team. We beat them two years ago and they had a rough go of it last year, but it looks like this could be their year. They have a really quality team.

"I'm not embarrassed to lose to them, but I wish we would have wrestled tougher."

While a state championship is no longer in Greeneville's future, the Devils will have to regroup because they still have a chance to finish third in the state. That journey will start today at 11 a.m. against either Martin Luther King or Notre Dame.

"We have to come in here tomorrow and win one more, then we'll be wrestling for third and fourth," Shelton said. "We have a really important match tomorrow and there is no shame in going home one of the top four teams in the state."

The start to the semifinal match was dire for Greeneville as three of their best wrestlers fell right off the bat.

Jimmy Bowman (195) battled through three rounds with Dylan Bargestoll and came to a 2-2 tie. The tie held through the first overtime but in the second overtime period Bargerstoll was able to take a 5-2 decision.

Nick Foster (220) and Bryson Knight (285) both lost to pins and Greeneville fell behind 15-0.

That deficit stretched to 21-0 when Bryant Renner became another victim of a pin, but then Greeneville looked as if they had found a glimmer of hope.

Joey Campbell (113) came to wrestle on Friday and dominated his match with Hixson's Spencer Groves before picking up a pin in the third round after he built a 12-3 lead.

"Joey has been kind of a funny case all year long because he has beaten kids that are ranked, but he just can't crack into the rankings," Shelton said. "That kid he beat was the number three wrestler in the state of Tennessee and Joey dominated."

"Joey takes a lot of pride in his wrestling and he'll get the recognition he deserves, the only recognition that matters, the podium at the (individual) state tournament."

It looked like Greeneville might use the pin by Campbell to swing the momentum, especially after Grayson Reed (120) followed with three points in an 8-5 decision. But that was not in the cards for the Devils.

Clay Alley (126) lost to Hixson's Isaac Yates by pin and Seth Brown (132) fell in a major decision, 16-6.

The teams followed by trading forfeits at 138 and 145 before losses by tech fall, decision, pin and forfeit ended the evening for Greeneville.

quarterfinals

It was not the performance Shelton was hoping for in the quarterfinals of the state tournament, but it was good enough to send his team to the state semifinals for the third year in a row.

The Greene Devils let Greenbrier hang around longer than Shelton would have liked, but in the end they had clinched a win with three matches to go before taking a 38-34 victory at the Class A/AA Duals Wrestling Tournament.

"It's always important to win," Shelton said. "Maybe it was first-match jitters, maybe it was sending a bunch of freshmen out there. We had several freshmen get in close matches. It wasn't our best match, but hopefully we can bounce back and do better."

The Devils got strong efforts from some of their top wrestlers but Shelton felt that he needs more out of his younger guys and made it his seniors' responsibility to make sure that happened.

"We need our seniors to have a good talk with these guys," Shelton said. "I'm going to talk with them and tell them to get the guys refocused. We didn't get a lot leadership out of them.

"It was a great job by Bryson Knight and Jimmy Bowman to set the tone. Unfortunately the younger guys did not respond as I had hoped. We then got great efforts from Garrett Wright and Josh Vance. Those four guys really carried our team."

Senior Jimmy Bowman (195) gave the Devils their first spark in the opening round of the tournament when he pinned Anthony Collins in just 32 seconds.

Bowman's win came after Walker Brown (182) took a tough 18-16 loss and gave the Devils a 6-3 advantage.

The Bobcats were able to take the lead briefly when Tanner Lynch (220) took a major decision over Nick Foster.

Knight regained the lead for Greeneville in a match in which he pushed Toby Lynch all over the mat before earning a pin that gave Greeneville a 12-7 lead, one they would never relinquish.

Bryant Renner (106) fell in a 10-6 decision and Joey Campbell (113) won by forfeit before Greeneville really got things going.

Grayson Reed (120) dominated Zane Lynch for all six minutes and did everything but nail Lynch's shoulders to the mat on his way to a 17-0 tech fall. Clay Alley (126) followed with a second-round pin before Seth Brown (132) won an 8-2 decision.

Josh Vance (138) stretched Greeneville's lead to 32-16 with a 30-second pin and then Garrett Wright clinched the match at 38-16 when he pinned Jesse Genasio in the second round.

Tyler Foshie (152) was pinned in the next match before Greeneville decided to forfeit the 160 and 170 matches because their lead was secure

FRANKLIN – Siegel fell one match short of reaching the Division I Class AAA semifinals Friday night in the 2015 TSSAA state dual wrestling championship.

The Stars won their first match in the Division I Class AAA bracket taking down Tennessee High 51-16.

“I just saw a lot of scrap,†Siegel coach Lee Ramsey said. “To look back and think we only gave up one pin to a state medalist. ... Anytime your kids are fighting like that you’ve got a good chance to win.â€

Christian Salter provided a spark for the Stars in the 160-pound class beating a ranked opponent in Tennessee High’s Dewey Pendley.

“I can’t say it was just me,†Salter said. “It was my practice partners and my entire team that did that for me.â€

Despite a large margin of victory over Tennessee High, Ramsey wasn’t caught up in the win.

“In this place it’s erase and go,†Ramsey said. “It’s not going to carry over.â€

Siegel’s momentum did not carry over into the next round just as Ramsey predicted, as the Stars fell to Bradley Central 71-6 in the quarterfinals, sending the Stars to the losers bracket.

Siegel wrestles the winner between Dobyns-Bennett and Gibbs at 11 a.m. today in an elimination match. The Stars can still place third with four wins.

“We’ve got a tough hill to climb but with this place it’s four wins,†Ramsey said. “Four wins and you’re a champion.â€

FRANKLIN — One step at a time isn’t an idea that enthuses Alcoa wrestling coach Brian Gossett.

The Tornadoes finished third Saturday to conclude their weekend run at the TSSAA Class A/AA State Dual Championships at the Williamson County Ag Expo, improving on last year’s fourth-place finish.

“I hope we don’t have to climb four years to win it,†Gossett said after Alcoa’s 40-30 win over Notre Dame — the same squad that the Tornadoes defeated 46-23 in Friday’s opening round.

“I thought our guys showed a lot of maturity this week. We had never won a first-round match here, and we did that. We lost in the consolation finals last year, and we won this time. So we showed some maturity, and I’m proud of that.â€

Following Friday’s semifinal loss to Pigeon Forge, Alcoa defeated Forrest, 53-30, in a consolation match Saturday to set up the second meeting in as many days with Notre Dame.

“I think it’s a negative,†Gossett said of facing the same opponent in such a short period of time. “Any time you have to wrestle somebody twice in two days — it’s a little easier on the team you beat, because you may have a level of confidence that may be false.â€

As it turned out, Alcoa’s confidence was well-founded. Jumpstarted by a pair of decisions by Ryan Verhulst and Tim Fisher at 132 and 138 pounds, the Tornadoes won 8-of-10 matches to begin the contest.

“We started in a place where we knew we were going their best guys at 145 and 152,†Gossett said, referring to Notre Dame’s Patrick Mullin and Noah Bankston. “We thought if we could weather that, we could go on a bit of a run.â€

Mullin won by forfeit and Bankston decisioned Austyn Renshaw, 8-6, but Alcoa answered as Gossett expected, with five pins and a 9-1 major decision by George Hooker at 170. With a 40-9 lead through 10 weight classes, Alcoa forfeited three of the last four matches and coasted home.

“We had a lot of kids that did a lot of good things to get us going,†Gossett said.

Securing third place, Gossett shifted his focus to the next couple of weeks and individual competition.

“The fact we got to practice this week with a goal in mind benefitted us, like it did last year,†he said. “And we got to see Pigeon Forge, so that helped.â€

In Class AAA, William Blount and Heritage each finished the tournament at 1-2. The Governors rebounded from Friday’s opening-round loss to Halls with a 48-24 win over Houston before falling to Arlington, 42-36, while Heritage lost to Beech in Friday’s second round and to Tennessee High, 39-36, on Saturday.

“We took a step in the right direction,†William Blount coach Tim Satterfield said. “I don’t think anybody gave us a chance to even win one.

“We’ve got some blue-collar kids that have bought in, work hard and do anything we ask. I’m proud of them. We did the best we could.â€

Against Houston, the Governors rallied from a 24-0 deficit with seven straight pins and a forfeit victory. However, they were unable to overcome a similar slow start against Arlington — falling behind, 27-0, and trading pins until 285-pounder Cade Ramsey fell in overtime to make it a 42-18 contest with three matches remaining.

Heritage’s clash with Tennessee was an all-or-nothing affair, with nine matches decided by pin.

“We had to bump some folks to try to even some matches out,†Heritage coach Jerry Teaster said. “We made some mistakes, going for pins and getting caught. If a couple of our guys don’t get pinned, we’re in it. But hats off to Tennessee. They’ve got a great team.

“This is going to be a blessing to us in the future. We had some freshmen grow up, and these live matches will help.â€

FRANKLIN – Siegel's historic wrestling season fell short of bringing home any hardware from the TSSAA's Class AAA state duals on Saturday.

However, it will remain one to remember.

Gibbs ended Siegel's run in the duals with a 34-31 victory after Gibbs freshman Landon Adizima edged Siegel freshman Daniel Bradford 5-3 at 120 pounds. That broke a tie at 31 entering the last weight.

"I thought we were going to get (the win)," Siegel coach Lee Ramsey said. "We had Bradford wrestling, and he's a kid that's stepped up all season long. There isn't another kid I'd want in that position.

"He just came up a little short."

Bradford appeared to get a two-point reversal at the end of the match, but no points were awarded. Ramsey said he thought the move was worthy of points, even if it was one point.

Siegel's first state duals appearance came in a season of firsts for the 12-year-old school.

The Stars won their first district and region titles this season en route to getting to state. Then the program beat Tennessee High to open the duals in its first match.

"We've got a young group, so that's a positive," Ramsey said. "It's hard to think about that now because your seniors are walking off.

"But we've got a group that is coming back and that is going to be competitive next year. I think this year shows that our kids aren't afraid.

"They don't let the big lights get to them. They've wrestled in some big tournaments this year."

Gibbs took an early 10-0 lead before the Stars came back. Christian Salter won at 138 pounds. Teammates Mason Loupe (152) won by major decision and Dustin Holmes (160) won by pin to tie it at 13.

From there, the lead went back and forth. Siegel's Michael Moultry pinned his opponent at 106 to get a 31-25 lead entering the final two weight classes. But Gibbs' Phillip Maxwell pinned Tyler Grant to tie the match.

Siegel hosts the Region 5-AAA individual tournament on Friday and Saturday. The top four in each weight class advance to the Class AAA state individual tournament.

Note: Sometimes I wonder if a Wildcard couldn't be implemented,,, when you look at how things ended this season in region 5 and over the years in other regions (Chattanooga or Cleveland), and knowing certain schools that stayed home could have placed in this tournament.

Archer claims the Area 8-AAAAAA tournament championship on Saturday at Parkview.

#LILBURN — Archer’s nationally ranked wrestling team is what you might call well-traveled, having already faced fellow powerhouses in places like Missouri and Pennsylvania this season. So when it comes to competing in its own backyard, you won’t find much trepidation in the eyes of the Tigers.

#“You go out and wrestle these teams you read about in the paper,†Archer head coach Tom Beuglas said. “Your kids realize, ‘We’re as good as these guys.’ Then when you get back here and wrestle kids from Georgia, they’re not intimated by any means.â€

#Traveling to nearby Parkview High School, Archer looked as confident as could be on the mats Saturday, amassing 282 points en route to another Area 8-AAAAAA tournament championship and outpacing second-place Brookwood by 107.5 points in the dominant showing. All 14 of the competing Tigers wrestlers made the finals, 12 of which went on to take first place in their respective weight class brackets.

#Riding the momentum of securing its third consecutive Class AAAAAA state duals title earlier this month, Archer has now captured its 10th tournament win of the season and appears poised to continue that success into sectionals and the state tournament next month.

#The team is ranked No. 5 in the nation by Wrestling Insider Magazine and again reminded the area of its standing among the country’s elite with the strong performance.

#“Can’t say I really expected 12 champs,†Beuglas said. “I knew there was a couple, any time you get in the finals there’s a couple that could go either way. Big thing was everybody got through, nobody was injured, nobody’s sick or any of that type of stuff.â€

#Challengers Brookwood and Parkview put forth plenty of fight. Parkview placed third with 146 points and helped prevent an Archer sweep with Andrew Webb’s (145 pounds) technical fall win over senior Trey Rinehart.

#The Broncos’ Stephen Solamon (195) also captured a finals victory by pinning Archer senior C.J. Beasley in the second period.

#However, the remaining gold medals went to Archer, which won nine finals matches by pinfall. Two of those — Vinny Artigues (120) and Alex Standridge (126) — were accomplished in less than one minute. Later on, sophomore Isaiah Pryor (182) pulled off an impressive feat of his own by winning his bracket as a No. 4 seed with a 12-3 major decision.

#“I think it’s pretty good parity (in the area),†Beuglas said. “Parkview’s got some good kids, Brookwood’s got some good kids, Grayson’s got some good kids. When you put everybody together like that, it works out pretty good.â€

#But however strong the field may have been, Beuglas added that his wrestlers “expect†to win this tournament. After all, they’ve already seen some of the best high school wrestlers this nation has to offer, and those top-flight competitions have in turn afforded them experience few other programs have attained.

#“Obviously it helps your kids get ready, but mentally it helps a lot, too,†Beuglas said. “When we were at state duals (in Macon), I heard some coaches say ‘This is the first time we’ve stayed in a hotel all year.’ Our kids have spent 18 nights in hotel rooms. So that stuff, they’re used to it. It’s just like any other weekend.â€

#All entrants that placed fourth or higher qualify for the AAAAAA East Sectional to be held at Parkview on Feb. 6-7. The traditional state AAAAAA championships will take place Feb. 12-14 in Macon.
