I think if they are to really improve, it starts before HS.  They have to have clubs to run elem levels and the Schools must adopt Wrestling in the Middle school levels with paid Coaching Positions.  Middle and HS need to have on campus faculty/coaches that are not run by AAU or USA.

Hence the backing of the schools. There has been many times that schools hire coaches because they can coach multi-sports. Also, there are a lot of times that schools pay the head coach and not the assistances. That would come out of the budget of the wrestling team or the head coaches salary. The sad thing is the school pays 5-7 coaches in football to the 1 in wrestling. It is sad and needs change. It will not happen until people for one understand the sport and two, do something about it. That is why we need community support and local college support.

Every school I have ever been apart of has always had one paid Head Coach and one paid Asst Coach for Wrestling both at Middle and HS levels. Yes Football has more Coaches but it takes more for that sport.

2 coaches for 60 kids to the 6 coaches for 100 kids at the varsity level? That is 1:30 and 1:19 coach per player ratio in paid positions. The point is, there needs to be more support than there is for any region to "catch up" to Bradley, Cleveland, Soddy, WC

The point is starting them younger.  Get kids at early ages and be part of more than just Folkstyle, that way they dont get burnt out.  Make it interesting and fun, Travel as much as Possible and do Freestyle and Greco as well.  They may learn and excel at one style more than the others.

You have to have help yes that is true, but Quality over Quantity any day.!

If you were at schools with 2 paid positions for wrestling , count yourself fortunate. Back when Greenback used to win regional titles the head coach was paid 400.00 per year. Kingston was in a similar place, and there are many more. Zero money for asst coaches. The only thing TSSAA cares about is football and basketball and quite a few schools take a similar view.

Judging by the results, the wrestling seems to have improved from prior years. Not nearly as many pins in the finals as I recall. Still some, but not the majority. If you are good enough to make the region finals you shouldnt be getting pinned.

Congrats to Tennessee High! I know a lot of hard work has gone into that accomplishment....Good Luck to all next week

Don"t know what middle schools you have been a part of Pummelking, but in our county, middle school wrestling is strictly club. If not for Dads and volunteers, there would be no middle school programs. It is tough to compete with other programs that have sanctioned sports and paid coaches. Even harder to fill a team with kids that will get no recognition from their school, for doing the toughest sport there is. Hats off to all those dads that volunteer their time and spend their weekends in tournaments coaching kids because they love the sport.

That is where the HS Head Coach and all the Parents of the Middle School programs have to take info to the School Boards.  Show them what other schools have to offer kids and what they schools need to do. They have a Conference down in Jeff /Greene/Hamblen Co.  Other parts of the state as well.  Get the Schools to incorporate the programs.

    • Deja vu all over again, 7 yrs apart. SMDH Does anybody talk to each other?
    • OK, well, that’s because two quarterbacks can’t start. That’s football 101. The main quarterback won the starting job, so he was on varsity, and the Seymour transfer did not win the starting job. He played some varsity. He was mainly junior varsity, and he balled out when healthy, so for the starting quarterback who’s been starting varsity since his freshman year, if you have any form of proof that he’s gotten worse, somehow, whether that means stats or whatnot, please feel free to share.
    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
