Are these high school football camps a racket?

These middle school and high school "exposure camps" and "combines" sound like the boys equivalent of beauty pageants. Other than the obvious all-expenses paid, invitation only camps, are these for real?

My opinion is they are a waste of your money. If you really want to get your kids name out there, make a highlight disc and send it out to the colleges your kid is interested in. I'm not really sure how many actual college coaches and scouts are at these events, I prefer to send a kid to the camps ran by the universities. Just remember, anytime you're paying someone, they're going to tell you that your kid is great.JMO

Agreed, all the college coaches at the recruiting fair put on by the Titans last week said the same thing and that they don't pay any attention to the stuff they get from them.

Not All the college coaches at the Titian event agreed with you sir. There were several colleges at the NEXT LEVEL EXPOSURE CAMP.  There will be several more at the NPA EXPOSURE CAMP Sunday at TSU.  I personally have had a lot of success and networking at different exposure camps. I have 5 college graduates this spring FULL RIDES due to EXPOSE CAMPS.  Not All are camps are the same.  Not all high coaches have relationships with the college scouts for their area.  So when a coach sends film without any contacts at the college it is not a priority.  But a high school coach that has a network of people like a Pearl Cohn Coach Tony Brunetti, Memphis White Haven Rodney Saulsberry, and New Stratford Coach & Legend Fitzgerald.  Colleges send scouts to see for themselves at event like these to find the next gems.

What 5 full rides schools are they?  I would be concerned about schools that just use exposure camps.  They are either lazy or not very good at recruiting.  Coach recommendation and film have always been and will always be the key.

NPA is different it is not just an exposure camp they have clinics or camps all through the spring and have networks developed because of who runs it but it is not the typical, but I stand by my previous posts.

i think exposure camps may work for some kids but in a lot of cases its the parents trying to showcase the kids for their own personal bragging rights.   at the middle school age are the parents really showcasing the kids for them to move on to the next level? i think not!   seems that a lot of the kids that are put up on the pedestal at a young age turn out  to not be that big of a force when they hit the high school level

I don't think college coaches can even attend these money grabs.

I wouldn't say money grabber. Everybody has different situations. My son got his first offer from there and after that he blew up. His work effort went from 70% to 110% lol. I've never seen. Head coach but on thing I can say that the NPA has at least 15 to 20 scouts out there that I seen.

Some are.  I took my son to MTSU's camp and they only worked with the kids they were recruiting.  However, when I took him to ETSU's camp, they were working with every kid there, teaching fundamentals and if someone made a mistake a coach would take them aside and actually SHOW them what they did wrong.

Whether we like it or not this has become a business and if you want your kid to get exposure, you're probably going to have to buy into it. The days of college coaches sitting around looking at last weeks box scores to determine who they may go watch this Friday are gone. Kids are being recruited from coast to coast. If you're sending out your kids film, it's probably never being looked at. Not wanting to hurt your feelings, just telling the truth.

    • RR, you might remember. Didn’t someone hide the kicking shoe that game? It seems I remember we had missed a kick the week before, and we needed all the points we could get. We thought we had a better chance going for two, so $?&@$ hid the shoe after the first miss that game. No one on our sideline looked for it very hard.
    • I will never forget the 1983 Heritage vs Maryville game. I remember driving home and listening to WGAP. Can't remember the announcers name. He asked Coach Story why he kept going for 2? Story told him " Why didn't you ask Renfro that last year"
    • TSSAA will let them all go to Mase.
    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
