Moore Co school board decided not to give Coach Slatten tenure...  that is sad as he has done wonders with the girls basketball program..  Those board members have no clue about the everyday happenings within a basketball program or any athletic program as a whole..

Does anyone know how long Slatten was at Moore County?

With the new tenure law, you have to be recommended for tenure for 2 straight years. The law went into effect 2 years ago I think, and he fell under the new guidelines. Supposedly, they have board members down there that are saying that they will never give anyone tenure under this new law. I think that he was a "4" OR "5" level teacher and because of it he had to go before the board, but if he wouldnt have been as good a teacher he wouldnt have had to go before the board and it would have been a mute point. Makes no sense they way that our teachers and coaches are done when it comes to their teaching positions.

If he is a 4 or 5, why would he have to go before the board. 5 is the best you can get. This makes no sense.

Basically, the new law that went into effect in 2011 says when a teacher has been employed for 5 years and they score 4-5's on evaluations for 2 consecutive years, they must be recommended for tenure by the superintendent. When they are recommended by the super,  the board has to vote whether to grant it or not. If they vote it down they cannot rehire that teacher. It happened to Coach Slatten and Coach Austin the former Football coach.

If I were a teacher, there would be no incentive to score a 4 or a 5 then.  I'd have a better chance to keep my job by being a 2 or 3 if they are just going to vote you out.  What happened to rewarding people who do well in their jobs?  Moore County is the only county I've heard of this happening though.

    • I have no idea who your team is, but Memphis and other Shelby Co. schools have hardly made a dent, if you’re talking Game 15 appearances. Outside of a couple by Whitehaven, I can’t recall the last team in a final.
    • Robbed you guy at a chance of 3 state championships. You never kne, sond best team in the west my have beat you also, but you sure deserved the chance to play um.
    • Eagleville also loses Brown the catcher, Lamb CF, Mclemore RF (Heck of an athlete) and Drew the 1st baseman. They will be young.
    • Good thing we aren’t in Florida then huh? It would benefit a ton of the smaller schools  that don’t have the pools of kids to choose from! They should start by policing Shelby County like they do the rest of the state! Something has to change though and TSSAA knows that!
    • Correct, you can whimsically be fired in coaching. A coach that has tenure can stay on as a teacher if released from coaching. If you don’t have tenure as a teacher, you can fired without cause. Your last year as a teacher before tenure is earned you can be fired, but must be given cause. A tenured teacher can be fired, but it is a long hard process requiring the 3 D’s…. documentation, documentation and documentation. I have released 3 tenured teachers, 2 with PHD’s. However, teacher contracts had and still have clauses that state you can be fired for a variety reasons re: being arrested, public drunkenness, inappropriate relationships ect.
