Well got a little 7 on 7 action with D'burg last night. Missing a player or two due to a school related trip, but looked pretty strong on D. A little softer on the corners than I would like to see, considering we will see a passing team or two this season. But a few games worth of experience should cure that. On O we had our Jr backup QB. Well if he's in the game and we decide to start passing our opponents will have WHOLE lot more to be concerned with. Very accurate with his passes, especially early on. We could easily transition into a passing team, but that will never happen. Overall we looked pretty good far a team just of the 2 week dead period and a hard morning work out under our belts.

Oh no, I don't want to see a spread type O at UC. I'm quite fond of the veer. But throw in a good pass attack, say %15 of the time and our running game gashes D's for more than it does now. By the way the last head coach that tried to install a spread O at UC is an assistant coach somewhere else now.

It's boring just running 4-5 yards per play. I think you guys need to throw it 60% of the time. :bored:  :bored:

Ground and pound baby. Old school gut busting football. Fear the Veer! It puts trophies in the case. I love it. Not the most exciting offense but it is effective. I don't ever want to change.

It's crazy just how effective the veer truly is considering it's one of the simplest offenses out there. Yeah, it can be 'boring', but it's a thing of beauty when ran properly, not to mention almost entirely impossible to stop as well.

Besides of their programs reputation, I'm not really familiar with UC at all. What is the main type of formation that UC runs the veer out of? Split-back, I-formation, Wishbone, Shotgun, a little of each, or what?

Fun fact: The College Football Hall of Fame credits Bill Yeoman with the invention of the veer formation. Yeoman ran that offense with the Houston Cougars beginning in the mid-1960s and continuing through his career at Houston, which concluded in 1986.

It depends on the situation. I suppose our base set would be considered split back I formation. Around here, we call it, the Mid-line Veer. . However, I have seen Coach Bowling use the shotgun and other formations to spread the defense out when they are trying to crowd the box. If you want to see some video from a couple of years ago you can go on YouTube and search Union City versus Nashville Christian 2013 and you will get a great understanding of what we do.

I'm going to look into that right now actually.

    • I will never forget the 1983 Heritage vs Maryville game. I remember driving home and listening to WGAP. Can't remember the announcers name. He asked Coach Story why he kept going for 2? Story told him " Why didn't you ask Renfro that last year"
    • TSSAA will let them all go to Mase.
    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
    • I would not put too much stock into the UH over Eagleville. From what I understand they were pretty banged up in that tourney. Catcher was out, they were throwing pretty deep in their bullpen and a few key players were beat up in their infield. Sounds like they are pretty healthy heading into the district tournament. Look at their schedule, they played some really good teams.
