NHSCA National Duals

Recommended Posts

Just came back from a great weekend of wrestling at the NHSCA National Duals in VA Beach.  TN had a few wrestlers there this weekend, but we are really missing out by not sending more teams to this tournament!  This tournament had 71 Elementary teams, 84 middle school teams and 168 High School Teams all wrestling in one building.  I haven't been to a better ran event.  We had our duals scheduled and we ran ahead of schedule every day and our duals were all wrestled during certain time periods(Day 1 and 2 from 12:30 to 4:30), and if you made it to day 3 you started wrestling around 9 until you were put out.

Southeast Regional Championships...

This!!!!!!

Our best wrestlers should be competing in freestyle and Greco-Roman at this time of year. I could write an essay on the reasons why but not going to hear.

To me, it is sad to see folkstyle tournaments continue to encroach on the time of year that should be reserved for the Olympic styles.

Amen, it's very frustrating that these money generated Folkstyle events are slowly taking over our FR/GR season....most if the kids listed are in my club but it's hard to convince families to compete at SE Regionals when they can get 8-10 matches at NHSCA duals.

Agreed. And the SE Regional is a great event right next door to our state. 20 mats, awesome facilities and they even filmed every match on every mat this year which can be viewed. We should be supporting USA Wrestling as much as possible. We owe a great deal to them for having saved Olympic Wrestling. On top of that it prepares kids for Fargo and is a perfect end of season event for those not going to Fargo.

The month of June and beyond has more than enough scholastic style events.

I agree that Freestyle and Greco are important and would rather wrestle those styles this time of year, however, going after the best competition in the country can be more important.  Southeast Regions participation numbers are falling off and the level of competition doesn't compare to what was at VA Beach.

I hate it when people make inaccurate statements... the participation numbers at SER have absolutely not dropped off.  I have tracked the total and our state's participation in SER going back to 2009.  Total participation in freestyle has been relatively flat since 2009.  Greco participation has seen a steady increase since 2009.  Both styles saw a significant jump in 2012 but came right back down to normal levels since then.

I can't comment on level of competition but I don't think SER was weaker than it has been in the past.  We are seeing an increase in the non-Southeast kids participating at the SER.  There were wrestlers from 15 states outside of the SER at the event.  The largest groups being Illinois at 54 (more than TN, AL, SC, or VA), New York 15, Ohio 12, Pennsylvania 10, Iowa 9.

No doubt that the level of competition at NHSCA's was good.  However, you have to keep in mind that it is a dual event and not an individual event.  That means certain things about the level of competition you may face... your team could do well and a particular wrestler never catch a stud based on other team's line-ups.  The opposite is also possible where your team doesn't do well but an individual wrestler does catch a ton of top competition.

I just don't like to see folkstyle events scheduled during this time of year... groups like the NHSCA have different goals than those at the national organization for our international styles.

Josh,

I hear you.  I think everyone faces those types of decisions.  Important to keep in mind that you can still get a ton of matches at SER but you could also go 0-2 if you aren't good enough.  Dual events guarantee matches for the "weaker" wrestlers.  Most of the kids mentioned wouldn't fall into that category.

Skimming through the results, most TN kids wrestled at least 4 matches per style so they got at least 8 (not counting the little guys who also did folkstyle).  I see several TN wrestlers who got 7 matches in one style.  I had one wrestler who got 8 matches in his Greco bracket.  I spotted several wrestlers who got into the 10-14 range in matches between the two styles.

Guess my point was, you can get plenty of matches at SER as well.
