A lot of this is speculation, so just for the record here is the last time DB played these teams:

Elizabethton (last played in 2008, DB 27   Eliz 14)

North (2004, DB 47  North 0)

Sullivan East (1992,  DB 50   East 0)

Hampton (could not see that DB has ever played Hampton)

There is no question in my mind that during most years a well funded public school with 2000 plus kids could beat most public schools with a third or fourth the students by what ever number.Yes there are schools like Alcoa that beat the odds and Hampton falls in that direction. On the other hand I've seen schools that should have beat teams by 50 in the first round,go home.So anything is possible, however you want to argue the point.

DB couldn't beat Sullivan North, Sullivan east, or Hampton by five touchdowns. I would bet my paycheck on that. Questionable if they could even beat a couple of those teams. I triple guarantee you they couldn't have beat Hamptons team from last year, and Hampton is a AA school. These match ups would never happen though.

I'll respectfully disagree.  Hampton had a pretty good team last year, but not that good.  Different teams, different speed, different games.

Not really hanging my hat on that scrimmage. I just do not see last year's DB beating just any school in this area by five touchdowns. Granted they would probably win, but they couldn't just beat the best local talent by Five.Maybe if DB went 9 and 1 last year they could blow everyone out by five touchdowns. Trust me, I understand the whole 1A through 6A classification deal about depth and all. But one guy posted they could beat all locals by five. That would include Elizabethton,East,North,Hampton, and Crockett. No sir, not them by Five touchdowns. I am anxious to see how DB does against Sullivan county's new school in the next few years.

I'll say it again, last years DB would hang 5 TDs easily over all those teams.  Big boy time for the small schools won't work out.  Elizabethan and Hampton could have kept it closer a little longer, but depth and just overall athletics.... hmmm

One of the best Elizabethton teams was 1999.  They rolled over everyone by at least 4 TD.  DB vs. Betsy.  Reverse happened.  As good as some of the smaller teams are, it is a different level.  Same thing when DB or SH plays Maryville.  As good as we think they are, Maryville shows you a completely different level.  The only teams around here that have showed close to that type of skill has been the Greeneville program, and in a few years.....

Things are bleak NE of Knoxville football wise.  Not picking, it is just a fact.  We can dream all we want about state titles and domination, but it isn't happening in our area.

It isn't the area, its the coaching.Very weak coaching in upper east tn. Greeneville is proof of that. Mo.West lost their good coach several years ago and haven't been near the same since. DB lost their defensive coordinator several years ago and that has had a huge effect on the program. It's all about coaching.

I can see the DB faithful is excited for the season to start because of the line this morning for season tickets that wasn't picked up. Heard a few say they were in line by 3:30am this morning to make sure they got tickets. I really hope the secondary has improved and learned to look for the ball instead of reading the receiver. I do believe the Tribe will be better this year!!!

You will start the season 1-0, but game 2 tells you where you really stand.     Of course that statement is predicated on Oak Ridge getting a QB who can toss the ball to #5 instead of at his shoe laces or over his head.    We'll see...

Maybe back in the old days when both were in the same class.I think DB takes OR this year but there is just one school in this part of the state in 6A that will tell you where you are and how far you need to go to compete against the top five or six teams in the playoffs.

    • Deja vu all over again, 7 yrs apart. SMDH Does anybody talk to each other?
    • OK, well, that’s because two quarterbacks can’t start. That’s football 101. The main quarterback won the starting job, so he was on varsity, and the Seymour transfer did not win the starting job. He played some varsity. He was mainly junior varsity, and he balled out when healthy, so for the starting quarterback who’s been starting varsity since his freshman year, if you have any form of proof that he’s gotten worse, somehow, whether that means stats or whatnot, please feel free to share.
    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
