I've selected 18 games for the inaugural 2016 Big Games in Memphis activity. Those of you who participate know how we do this. Be careful because there are Thursday night games, as well as, Friday and Saturday night games. Don't miss out and start your season off on a wrong note. The first half of the season is critical in being a top performer. If you get behind in the beginning, it is hard to catch up. As is our custom, these games involve schools that are in the Memphis area, be it private or public school. With that being said the following are the games that have been selected to be in the first week of BGIM for 2016:

Games being played on Thursday, August 18, 2016:

Game 1: KIPP vs Memphis Overton @ Melrose

Game 17: Mitchell @ Whitehaven ... @ 8:00 PM (Whitehaven Classic)

Game 18: KIPP vs Trezevant @ Crump ... @ 7:30 PM (North Memphis Classic)

Yes ... again, KIPP plays back to back games in one week end just like they did last year. So, this Saturday night we will have the Kansas State dual-threat QB commit, Dwayne Betts with 1A - KIPP (coached by Tim Thompson) playing against the Clemson RB commit, Cordarian Richardson with 2A - Trezevant (coached by Telli White). Man ... that's going to be a good one.

Ah ... so many choices ...

Just for your edification ... Saturday, August 20, 2016

Thursday's prep sports roundup

By John Varlas of The Commercial Appeal

If the high school football season is going to be like Thursday's opener, it's going to be unpredictable.

Brandon Willis ran for 191 yards on just 12 carries and scored twice as Overton used a potent ground game and a big size advantage up front to defeat KIPP Academy, 32-0 at Melrose.

After a scoreless first quarter Willis punched it in from 10 yards out before quarterback Kenny Morrow (91 yards) scored from the 13 to make it 14-0 at halftime. Willis raced 56 yards to make it 20-0 before his 60-yard run set up a 3-yard Morrow touchdown.

Martez Chapman closed the scoring with a 3-yard run with five minutes to go while Ladarius Haynes had a key interception late in the first half to thwart a potential KIPP scoring drive.

KIPP quarterback Dewayne Betts — who has committed to Kansas State — couldn't get anything going, completing 3 of 14 passes for 14 yards while rushing for 53 on nine carries.

Overton, who finished 1-9 last season and scored eight points or less six times, won their first game under new coach and former assistant Edgar Williams. It doesn't get any easier for KIPP, who take on Dandy Dozen No. 4 Trezevant Saturday at 8 p.m. in the final game of the North Memphis Classic at Crump.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well ... I didn't see this coming.

    • The amount of people pooing on UH is crazy. They're a noticably better team than last year when they made state and were competitive , AND they run ruled Eagleville a few weeks ago. Now I understand Eagleville was missing a few guys, but they still. They. Run. Ruled. Eagleville. 1st single A team to run rule Eagleville since when? Pre 2017??
    • If that Yellow Paint is all gone I'll flat bet it didn't wash off there. I bet that took some scrubbing to remove that if it is gone. Lacrosse is one of those northern sports all these misplaced Yankee's that are posion to the community brought in by  (Blount Partnership, ( The Devil) with them so somebody allowed them to paint their markings on the field that cost more than the twenty top people on payroll at Maryville make a year. All this to please the 1% Club and the 25 people that would come to see it. All in the name of WOKE!!!!!!
    • They will probably, struggle
    • Dyersburg is going to be good, really good. As mentioned, they have a lot of talent on the way and the trio of Chelby, Joya, and KayKay will only be better with a full season together under their belt. To me, playing in Murfreesboro two consecutive postseasons will only serve to make them more dangerous if/when they stand among the final eight teams this March. Experience, good or bad, always makes you better. And not only do they have experience, they know how to win there. Schedules are coming together for all of the teams and I am excited about what I am seeing on the preliminary drafts on Dyersburg’s schedule. I know I am being a tease, but it’s simply not my place to announce what another school is doing. With that said, I won’t go into specifics. However, I am excited about renewed home and away contracts for the non-district portion of the calendar. I think west Tennessee will have a lot of interest as well.
    • What does everyone have in the final 8? In no particular order. 1. Eagleville 2. Gordonsville 3. Greenback 4. Oakdale 5. South Pitt/ East Robertson-- not sure 6. Richland 7. Halls 8. Union City
