State Individual Seeding, Does head to head matter?

Recommended Posts

Looking at the TSSAA regulations for girls. Just want to clarify. If a girl was a state champ in a lower weight class in 2023, has now bumped up and was beaten by a girl in the 2024 regular season in the new competing weight class, the state champ still gets the higher seed, regardless of head to head results?

(Section IV B.)
Wrestlers who meet the qualification shall be placed in each weight division in the state tournament. In order to be placed, a wrestler must be a sectional champion and must have been a state place finisher during her high school career.

The criteria for placing shall be as follows.

1. Separate all state champions (includes state champions from other states)

2. The following criteria shall be used to separate state champions: (a) state champion at same weight, (b)state champion at higher weight, (c) state champion at lower weight. (If there are two state champions at the same weight the state champion from Tennessee will receive the higher seed.).

3. Follow the same procedure as #2 above for 2nd place from previous year, 3rd place from previous year,

4. Items #2 and #3 shall be applied in order to wrestlers who placed in the state tournament two years prior.

5. Blind draw.

I'm less familiar than some others about the TSSAA seeding rules, but is head to head even considered? I don't see anything about it. Also, is the girl that won the H2H this year a previous state placer? Per the rules you posted:
"In order to be placed, a wrestler must be a sectional champion and must have been a state place finisher during her high school career."

If not a state placer, then she'll just get the blind draw.

She is. So she would still be in seeding criteria. She won the H2H in this 2024 season. But placed lower in the 2023 state tournament.

According the to the handbook, it would also indicate that Regional placement doesn't matter either.

Criteria for seeding is medaling the previous year and winning regionals. If you do both of that then you will find a seed.

Head to head isnt a criteria in duals state or individual state, for boys OR girls.

Fair. So, is winning regionals the only factor, or does regional placement matter?

I know we have the ability to seed each weight class properly...  but an automatic bracket would be an improvement to the current system.  D2 already does this, but D1 and girls could easily do the same thing.

Girls backet:

Top half:

Region 1 #1 vs Region 4 # 4

Region 2 # 2 vs Region 3 # 3

Region 3 # 2 vs Region 2 # 3

Region 4 # 1 vs Region 1 #4

Bottom Half:

Region 2 #1 vs Region 3 # 4

Region 1 # 2 vs Region 4 #3

Region 4 # 2 vs Region 1 #3

Region 3 #1 vs Region 2 #4

For Boys- change the word sectional for region and bam- exact same thing.  I know its not a perfect system, but a thousand times better than what is used now.

Given this, it could still put the true  1 and 2 seeds on the same side of the bracket.

    • I remember very well watching things change in the late 80's and yes it's all schools. Most people that are in charge today have any idea because they were raised and taught under this social experiment so they don't have a clue. Anyone that does see the truth for what it is usually try and hide it by blending in so that the School Gestapo doesn't round them up and take them to the Fuhrer ( kindly putting it ). Yes it is all schools not just Maryville. This train ride is not headed in a good direction and if the public had seen a movie of what's happening now back in 1980 everyone would have been headed home afterwards to change underware.
    • Hoping to make the playoffs.
    • You are so correct!  It’s really 99.9% of academia want to change to way that education is not only taught but the way it is viewed.  The pendulum has definitely swung as far to the left as possible and eventually will swing to the right much too far.  I have always  said that politics and one’s personal religious views need to stay out of education,  but for the last 40 years education has been running full throttle to what we have today.  If the social experiment that we are currently experiencing continues it is only a matter of time before the public school system in the USA completely collapses and all kids attend private schools or even worse don’t go to school.

    • I am talking about what they both did for their team. They both carried their team for four years while they were both there. I wasn’t really comparing them that would be unfair. Bishop is on a level of his own.
