New TSSAA rule....good or bad?

Recommended Posts

Rep. Scott Cepicky, R-Culleoka, proposed a bill this week that would force the Tennessee high school athletics governing body to change its bylaws and allow athletes one free transfer without eligibility restrictions.

Cepicky’s House Bill No. 0025 would make it illegal for a public school to belong to an interscholastic athletic association that restricts eligibility in that way. HB0025 is written to allow a free one-time transfer without restriction. The TSSAA’s current eligibility rules would apply to all transfers after that.

“(Other) courts have already ruled, with the transfer portal in college, that prohibiting an athlete from moving school to school is against the law,” Cepicky said. “I think what we're doing is trying to preempt the Wild West (of unlimited transfer legislation) by saying we acknowledge one time is fair. Hopefully, that will be enough that it will stand up in court

Does the new law say anything about availabilty of seats in public schools and crossing county lines?

For example if a student who lives in Hendersonville (Sumner County) waned to go to Mt. Juliet (Wilson Co.) Could the student cross county lines? If Mt. Juliet was at capacity could Wilson County say no?

Good point. That would be my only objection.

I am definitely for the rule change, allow the kids the opportunity to make a move that serves their best interest, they get one shot to play, they should be allowed to find a school that they fit in with and they can showcase their talent.  Glad the legislature is getting involved, TSSAA has been to slow to act!

Agree. This bennifits open zoned counties. Still can't cross county or district lines without space and schools approval, but for 1 move, you don't have to sit for a year.

    • South Gibson drags you to the deep end and makes you like it. Tough group that communicates and really seems to love competing.  Union City will be improved but don't know how they handle nights were Moss doesn't go off.  South Side is fast and athletic but I don't think they're as good as last year.  Westview girls will be better later in the season because they are depending on folks that haven't done it yet.  Westview may lose a district game but they'll be the 1 seed over UC.  South Gibson beats Dyersburg for that district. South Side runs Jackson again.
