Art, you're crazy, the number 18 team in the nation was outscored in the second half by an average Tennessee team? I don't think so, Maryville is a very gutsy team, they have their bad days, but when they are on they are very very hard to beat. Four of their 5 starters will be playing division 1 basketball: Humphrey, Houser, Gaskin, and Tipton. If that is average, I want to know what great is!?

Sullivan Central could beat anybody in AA. They have that potential due to their 3pt shooting, quickness, and depth. I predict that they will beat Elizabethton at least once this year. Laseur is quite a player, very athletic.

Volunteer has unlimited potential and could beat either Central or Elizabethton. If Volunteer finished 1st in the conference that would not be a terribly big surprise. Most people consider them to be the 3rd best team, but they could beat the top 2 if they play to their ability.

Unicoi County (6-6) is certainly not top 10 this year, but they're a team to watch in the future. 6-3 forward/guard Matt White (16 ppg) leads a talented sophomore class that continues to improve. Unicoi County lost 3 games early in the season that came down to the buzzer and could easily be 9-3.

The key to beating Elizabethton is taking away their easy baskets, making them shoot from the perimeter. However, don't let B.J. Miller shoot from the perimeter. They are a good choice for #1, but they can be beat. Anybody else wonder why Vince Redd didn't make the US Army All-American game? He should have been there. He's a lot better that one US Army All-American that I know about, Sian Cotton from Akron St.Vincent-St.Mary.

Hey Reb,

Did you make that above statement in a moment of passion, or do you really, honestly believe it?

Throw out Humphrey, you and I both know he's D1 ... but if those other three fellows are D1 material than my W.B. Govs have at three future D1 players also because I promise you Dustin Rose, Jonathan Johnson, and Bobby Golden would give your three boys all they wanted in game of 3 on 3 ... I personally think the WB boys would have the edge.

My lowly view:

Houser - great leaper ... might play for Randy Lambert up at MC or somewhere on that level ... not D1 !!!

Gaskin - incredible athlete ... would need to give up football and concentrate 24/7 on basketball for the next year and a half to have a chance at playing D1 (not yet as good as his daddy was in his prime)

Tipton - real suprise ... incredible he didn't play any varsity last year (that I recall) ... still too inconsistant and inexperienced on this level to project as D1.

Of course, only time will tell, but I think your quote, at this point, is just a little bit of a stretch.

BTW, great win against Bearden. Blount hung with Cleveland for three quarters, but just couldn't handle their speed. Cleveland had a hard time handling Golden in the post, especially the first half ... but William Blount's other post players forgot to show up.

Sorry SH and Maryville fans.

SH must be improving from the games I saw them play in Dec., shot the lights out against SE. Good for them. When D-B and SH play later this month, it may be another classic. Tight, close, heated rivalry basketball games are really alot of fun. Some real excitement and emotions can get away from everyone in a bigtime game.

Maryville beats Bearden on the road and Lee H. comes up big again. Why would UT not sing this kid. Best pure shooter I have seen in many years. I still don't think there are any other bigtime College prospects on this team.

The only player that might have a chance to play for a div 1 college is tipton cause the kid hasn't stop growing. He has a huge upside. Wait until his senior year he's going to be tough. But about the other two, jordan johnson did not go to a div 1 school and he is way better than houser and gaskin. Both are nice players but not div 1 material

If they dominated SH them how come they both lost to SH? And Greeneville has lost to SH 2 this year. Explain that one. I will agree DB pretty much dominated that game at SH and SH won on a last second prayer, but Greeneville did not dominate at all. It was a close game the whole time except for the final 4 min when Greeneville pulled away only to have SH crash their dreams in the final seconds. Sorry loser but you need to get your facts straight.

Greeneville didn't dominate the first half, but they did dominate the second half. Greeneville, I will admit, cannot handle the pressure late into the game and that is exactly what happened when they played Science Hill.

I have said this before & I'll say it again, I think Greeneville, SH & DB are both neck & neck. It can go either way either time.

Surf4life--do you do a lot of surfing in East TN or what?

    • Deja vu all over again, 7 yrs apart. SMDH Does anybody talk to each other?
    • OK, well, that’s because two quarterbacks can’t start. That’s football 101. The main quarterback won the starting job, so he was on varsity, and the Seymour transfer did not win the starting job. He played some varsity. He was mainly junior varsity, and he balled out when healthy, so for the starting quarterback who’s been starting varsity since his freshman year, if you have any form of proof that he’s gotten worse, somehow, whether that means stats or whatnot, please feel free to share.
    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
