Maryville vs William Blount Boys

OK, Friday nights a big night in Blount County B-ball. William Blount travels to Maryville. Let's see if we can break it down without trashing each other.

Last year in region semi's and first half of game at WB this year, Blount was able to shut Lee down. They won the region game, they had a pretty good lead at half-time this year. Lee came back strong the second half and Maryville blew the Gov's off their own court.

We've debated the quality of the rest of Maryville's team and how good they might be without Lee. William Blount has good, solid talent 1 - 7 or 8 players. But they are going to need somebody to step up and be their "horse." Sophomore Aaron Eakins had 6 threes Friday against Sev. County. He could be a key for William Blount. Also, Maryville will have to stop Blount's post player, Bobby Golden (who incidently is the son of Jimmy Golden, a.k.a. Bunkhouse Buck for all your rastlin' fans).

The past couple of years (with last years regional tourny game being the exception) Maryville's defense has just stifled William Blount. For Blount to win, they'll have to keep Lee in check and they'll have to be able to score some from outside. If they can do those two things, I like their chances. They've got to go to Bearden tomorrow night, so it's a make or break week for them, as far as district seeding goes.

I think that Maryville is somewhat a new team since the Arby's tournament. Drew Houser is an excellent post player that can hold some of the best players in the state below their averages. I think he will have a lot of confidence against Bobby Golden, especially now that he's seen him play. I think guard play for William Blount will be key, they don't get a lot of scoring production from them, unless on a fast break, and that is made even harder with the bigger, and fast, Maryville lineup. I think the addition of Gaskin will be a tremendous boost to Maryville, as a starter, Gaskin has been going all out and he's just been darn good lately! Honestly, no offense, but I think its Maryville's to lose. I think that their attitude towards the game will be the deciding factor. If they go in pumped up and playing hard, it will be really tough to beat them, if they go in and play with only a little bit of heart I think William Blount can and definetly will take it. Should be a good game!

Our student section? Our student section is terrible this year! We might be loud for Heritage and William Blount, but every other game is a social event! We didn't actually stand at a game until the William Blount game and we didn't do it again until we played Bearden. We might keep doing it, but I seriously doubt it, our students would rather talk than cheer. I for one am hollering and being the terror that is the Maryville student section, so on Friday when you hear some funny random comment come from the Maryville student section...its me!

Reb,

Listen, I was there last Friday night at the Heritage game. Your dry erase board is is too little. From the other side of the court I couldn't read what it said. Whoever's doing that, needs either a bigger board or at least to write bigger.

Also, please consider not yelling "daddy" at Nick Everett. The kid made a mistake, but he's done the best he could by it. I'm not proud of him for getting his girlfriend pregnant, but I am proud for the way he's stepped up and taken responsibility. Am I asking too much?

Gov, that was my whiteboard, but that was the biggest I have, I will try to get a darker color that will be easier to read. We didn't make fun of Nick by yelling 'Daddy' in the first game, and we won't in the second, its classless and we realize that. Wait..this is coming from the same guy that wrote HICKS on the whiteboard and told his best friend to walk over to the Heritage student section and show it to them...nevermind the classless comment..lol! No, just kidding, we know better than to make fun of someone for that! I don't know if I'll take the whiteboard, it was funny, but it was way too crowded and hard to write on it. WB will be worse, so I think I will just stick to my normal ref shirt and my best friends "Maryville Man" outfit and we'll be yelling and poking fun and whatever.

I saw Maryville man--at least I think--was he wearing a wrestling leotard thing??? I thought Teague and Wagner looked pretty good in their overalls too.

LordIn ... are you kidding? Maryville by 25?!? Give the Gov's a little credit. Just for that ... I'm going to lead the "look at the scoreboard cheer" late in the game after William Blount has it locked up !!!!

Reb, you can buy a piece of 2' x 4' white board at Home Deport for pretty cheap. It's thin and doesn't have the big frame around it or anything. Might work.

    • Deja vu all over again, 7 yrs apart. SMDH Does anybody talk to each other?
    • OK, well, that’s because two quarterbacks can’t start. That’s football 101. The main quarterback won the starting job, so he was on varsity, and the Seymour transfer did not win the starting job. He played some varsity. He was mainly junior varsity, and he balled out when healthy, so for the starting quarterback who’s been starting varsity since his freshman year, if you have any form of proof that he’s gotten worse, somehow, whether that means stats or whatnot, please feel free to share.
    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
