Ezell Harding "What lesson are you teaching?"

Are the Ezell players being allowed to join the team mid-season without sanctions? As this is a message board, I understand it may be rumor.

On more than one occasion my sons had to sit out the first quarter or half of a game due to missing a day or a class FOR BEING SICK.

One of them had to miss an entire game because he had an "unexcused" absence from school. (Due to his practice schedule he was unable to find clothing to wear for a "required" school function during business hours and had to take time away from class.)

DCA players are required to lift and do conditioning during the summer months. They have to keep records and make 90% of the workouts. Players who do not meet the criteria have to sit out a certain number of quarters before being allowed to play. Because of this rule, players missed the early part of THIS season and it cost DCA a couple of games. It was the right thing to do.

These rules are in place to see that there is discipline and order on the team. It is also there to teach the players that they must be "self-disciplined."

Please understand where I'm coming from. I know each of the three players involved at Ezell. I think they are good kids and have great respect for their parents. I had a good measure of respect for their coach. But...

Is it right for these young men to come back with no sanctions? NO!

Should they be "asked" to come back as SENIORS and take playing time away from underclassmen? NO!

Is winning more important than the lessons you teach and the example you set? NO!

I was very sad when I heard that AJ, Antwain and Austin were not going to play at the start of the year. I thought they were being selfish and that they were letting the team and coach down by not playing. They were putting their needs above the those of the team.

Bottom line... WINNING IS NOT EVERYTHING! I find it hard to believe this would not bring dissention among the team, the parents, the faculty and the alumni of the school. I would be greatly surprised if this was allowed to happen.

Rules and guidelines are an essential part of the educational process. I've always thought basketball should be used as a means to teach discipline, sportsmanship, character, integrity and loyalty.

If the rumor is true... I guess some people think differently.

The team voted on it and decided to let them come back.

Let me ask you this, did you ever make a decision and change your mind when you were 18?

Five years ago if MJ had just gotten so burned out from playing sports 365 days a year for 6 years that he decided not to play basketball and then started missing it. Would DCA fans have said "Sorry MJ, even though you're the best athlete we've had since Scooter, you can't play?"

I know that clown Frensley would have let him back. And DCA would have smiled about it, but since DCA hasn't had a dominant multisport athlete in a few years, they've forgotten what it's like.

I don't have a dog in this fight but I do believe I will have to side with winner because, in the responce by RealGoEagles he says "Let me ask you this, did you ever make a decision and change your mind when you were 18?". Yes we all have, but in sports they try to instill discipline and a commitment and by quitting and then coming back mid season teaches you neither. Also, of course the team will vote him back on. Was this just one player or multiple players?

In my opinion the coach may care a little bit more about winning. If it was all that cared about he wouldn't have even thought to have the teams opinion considered. I play high school ball and I start. If a player didn't play at the beginning of the year and then came on and took my position it would make me want to work harder. The best players should play and if feelings get hurt then so be it. I would see the selfish opinions towards the coach if the team would have voted it down then the players were let on the team. However, he made a TEAM decision and let them have the over all say so. I have no reason to back Ezell I just feel the coach is getting bashed for doing what the TEAM thought was best.

there is nothing wrong with the players joining the team. this three kids were burned out and they needed time to rest. in these day and age we expect kids to play 365-24-7. well our bodies can't take it. these kids are great athletes and they knew their body needed a rest. now for the man from dca, i believe you are upset by this because ezell harding will become the team to beat in the district now. let the kids play.

Well ok if you let them back on what lesson are you teaching them, sure quit and then when we need you we will let you back on, that teaches no life lessons in discipline or commitment

WINNER......... After reading your post, i get the feeling that you are a big fan of your head boys b ball coach. teaching "self discipline", REQUIRING offseason workouts, etc......If i do remember correctly, please someone on this board correct me if im wrong, but i know im not wrong so dont bother, but this coach you are describing let a player do the EXACT same thing back in 1998..............Im not saying there is anything wrong with what they did. Sometimes you make bad decisions and im glad they gave them a 2nd chance seeing as how they are 17 and 18 year olds, but before giving examples of how your coach has all these rules and regulations, realize he is guilty of the EXACT same thing.

    • Deja vu all over again, 7 yrs apart. SMDH Does anybody talk to each other?
    • OK, well, that’s because two quarterbacks can’t start. That’s football 101. The main quarterback won the starting job, so he was on varsity, and the Seymour transfer did not win the starting job. He played some varsity. He was mainly junior varsity, and he balled out when healthy, so for the starting quarterback who’s been starting varsity since his freshman year, if you have any form of proof that he’s gotten worse, somehow, whether that means stats or whatnot, please feel free to share.
    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
