1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A- What's the difference?

Having a lot of players playing both ways is a huge disadvantage. The main reason Maryville was able to come back and beat Hillsboro in the 2002 4A title game was because Hillsboro had a ton of players going both ways.Their players were dead tired and had their hands on their hips the whole 4th quarter. Even the guys announcing the game thought Maryville won because of their depth advantage over Hillsboro.

Talent and coaching wins games. But! A team that has 35 players with most of their team playing both sides of the ball will not beat a team that has 85 players who have almost all their guys play on one side of the ball. The only way a team with small numbers can beat a team with big numbers is if the small team has a few difference maker studs on their team and the large team doesn't

Now in College the difference would be money. Do you really think the fans would come to that game? I don't think so. UT wouldn't schedule somebody like that.

AE has 2 or 3 players that plays both ways but I don't think playing both ways the whole game will wear anybody down. A lot of teams no matter their classification might have 2 or 3 players that plays both ways. But I get the point. I just wanted to hear what everybody thought. This is good. I'm getting a lot of opinions. I still think any small A school could compete with any Big A school year in and year out. Hey, AE played Independence in NC. They got stomp but that team was the #1 team in the Nation when AE played them.

Yes, orange-shirted people would fill Neyland for a game against Cumberland. They'd charge a little lower ticket price for it, but that's similar to what they already do.

And yes, there's a big difference between the classes. Not so much 4A vs. 5A or 1A vs. 2A, but the players are bigger, faster, stronger, and flat out better in the bigger schools. Quick, when's the last time you saw a 180-pound lineman make all-conference at a 4A or 5A school?

Some guys can play both ways all game without wearing down. Most can't. Most could play both ways if they didn't play 100% all the time. Also, if you only have to worry about one side of the ball, you're going to be able to know your position better.

The bigger schools usually have more, and better, coaches also. Sure, the best 1A and 2A schools could compete with a few poor 4A and 5A schools, but week in and week out, they'd get killed.

I agree with that statement.

I know at Maryville the kids that play both ways are mainly the secondary guys and the receivers. Last year you had Andrew Clement,Tyler Gaskin and Alex Rouse playing both ways. Those guys were starting receivers. But! They alternated kids a lot at receiver like Kirk Harris,Ryan Jenkins and Chase Sanders. In the secondary you had Logan Fowers and Adam Humphrey starting at corner. Matt Cox played a lot at corner also.Cox,Flowers and Humphrey played defense only. The starting safeties were David Garner and Tyler Gaskin. Rouse and Clement alternated a lot at safety. Garner was the only safety that played defense only.

Maryville's offensive line plays offense only,Maryville's quarterbacks and running backs play offense only. Maryville's defensive line plays defense only. Maryville's linebackers play defense only.

It isn't that hard for receivers and defensive backs to play both ways. Especially if they get plenty of rest. It is real hard for linemen to go both ways. Linemen go hard on every play.

I got in a heated arguement with a 4A fan about this issue tonight at Ruby Tuesday. He said the difference is the size of the players and the coaches are better in 4A. I told him that a lot of players in different A's are bigger or the same size as big A scools but he didn't think so. So let's hear some more feed back on this....

I think several people have answered your question in depth...but you don't seem too believe what the majority has spoken. In my opinion your gonna ask the question until someone tells you what you want to hear...so here goes nothing.

I have no doubt that AE can beat or compete with any school in this great state. Talent, size, speed and money can't always overcome the Heart...Courage...and Determination of the AE Roadrunners.

Hows that??? :)

Big Sneaky is right on the money.

AERoadrunners wants everyone to say that AE would beat any team in the state. I remember him starting posting after the 2001 season when AE and Maryville both won state titles. I remember him saying AE would have beaten Maryville and almost every poster telling him that Maryville would have beaten AE. I remember how upset that made him. I think a lot of his resentment for Maryville is because of the attention that Maryville gets. He wants AE to get all the glory and attention.

Austin East does have a good program. They will have great athletes every year. Fulton and AE could compete with any 4A,5A or Super 7 school because both teams have great athletes.

Here is another advantage that schools with large rosters have over schools with small rosters. No one has brought this up.

At schools like Maryville where they have 80 plus players is the 1st string offense will go up against the 1st string defense every day in practice. That helps both units out a lot. It makes them work harder. It gets very competitive at practice because no starter wants to get embarassed. It helps the team get better.

At a smaller school with small rosters the 1st string offense will go up against non starters. The 1st string defense will go up against non starters. A lot of times the 1st string will take it easier on the young player. I saw this at Maryville in the late 70s early 80s when Maryville only had 40-45 players on the roster. Maryville was a lot smaller school then.

Hey RebelRon, that was well said about Fulton and AE could compete in the higher divisions such as 4A and 5A.... We will see next year when Fulton moves up to 4A and I know that they can compete with anyone...

Ok, it's not all about AE. Most Maryville peeps know this but I graduated from Knoxville West, which is a 4A school, and I don't see the difference. I didn't start this thread just because I thought AE could hang with the "big dogs", I started this to get your opinions. If you read this whole thread from the top, you'll find out that each person has a different opinion and some are just saying the bigger A would win without no doubt because they're bigger. I think I should write Ask Chuck of the KNS to see what his answer would be.

But what if each school had the same amount of enrollment, what would be the difference than? What if Maryville, Fulton, Carter, Motown West, Alcoa, etc.. all had the same amount of students in their school, what would be the difference then?

Just hold up one minute! I didn't start a thread about that. Another person started that because Maryville got a big artical in the KNS and AE which is located in Knoxville, TN recieved a smaller artical. Now I didn't get upset. I know I have a lot of faith in my boys at AE and I won't back down from that. But I'm not speaking as a 3A person, I'm more of a 4A person when it comes to this thread. Remember I graduated from a 4A school but now I'm a avid fan of a 3A school. This has nothing to do with AE. I just asked a question and since my coachT name is, "AERoadrunners", you all are thinking I'm just trying to put AE on the map by getting you all to say AE would beat any Big or Small A school. It's not like that and I don't understand how you all are just thinking that because my screen name is AERoadrunners.

    • Yeah and the coach is gone. Whole bizarre situation here. We played them a couple of times at MTSU last few years. She was a player for sure.
    • This whole situation is bonkers. You don’t just kick your star player off the team just because you heard them say the F word; the coach definitely had something against the player, or somebody definitely did. Also, nobody has brought up the idea that the school blackmailed the college to get the college to withdraw the scholarship offer, not to mention that the coach who kicked her off is no longer even with the program; they were fired. I think this is a pretty easy lawsuit. I don’t know if she should deserve that much money, but I think she should get enough money for a full-ride scholarship if she cannot get one after this situation.
    • Oh yeah, I’m sure you are different people just always on the same thread for some reason, always agreeing with each other, perhaps just a bunch of dorks who would like to ###### and moan about high school football coaches do a lot of other students, so you make a football team and get a yell at them. When they do something wrong, but I’m sure you don’t like that, do you?   and I’m sure I’m aware of where you get information. A teacher who was on the coaching staff but was fired after the new coaching and staff came in and realized he actually had to start taking his assistant job a little bit more seriously than just wanting to make a little extra cash on the side, hardly even showing up to most practices, should’ve left with his buddy to go to Farragut. I’m sure he could get him a defensive coaching job, but I doubt he will be there in three years. Looking at the way Farragut is currently going.
    • It may be hard to believe but there’s more people than me that think you guys are a bunch of losers.    I’m sure the coaching staff, yourself included, cursed at a bunch of high school students. Nobody could name more than 3 coaches on staff due to the constant turnover.
    • That's complete BS.  Nobody at ACHS has access to CHS student records unless a transfer is made from CHS to ACHS.
