Well, two great coaches haven't been mentioned but need to be: Randy Barnes of Union City and Rod Sturdivant of Bruceton. Both are out of the game now, but they were both two of the most successful around. Both had around 200 wins in their 20-plus years.

Barnes did not win a state title, but took two unbeaten teams to the state 2A championship game (1997 and 2000) and his 1998 and 1999 teams were in the semifinals. Also, he won big when only one team from each DISTRICT (not region, back in the three-classification and no public-private split days) went to the state playoffs. In 21 years, his teams were in the postseason 19 times. Pretty good.

Sturdivant won some state titles at Bruceton and had some of the state's top players, too. Look in the state record books. You still see the name Longmire.

Seems to me these two men should get some credit, both on this message board and in the TSSAA Hall of Fame.

Best Coach Ever .... now thats an interesting question. 9 out of 10 people automatically think of winning record. What about that coach that was 0-10 but made men out of boys and inspired them to great things. What about the innercity coach who struggles to win 50% of his games but acts as a surrogate father to a half a dozen teenagers and keeps them out of drugs and gangs and jail. I've seen some winning coaches that don't go the extra mile to look out for their kids and plenty of losing coaches that would mortgage their house to help support a teenager's family that needed the help.

Best Coach Ever .... I don't think we will ever really know!

If you were to pose this question to the coaches themselves, without a doubt one name that would be mentioned across the state is Clint Satterfield of Trousdale County. From a standpoint of pure football expertise, they don't get any better. Even when his teams lack in athletic ability, you better beware. He is a mastermind at exposing superior opponets weaknesses and motivating his team no matter who they are playing. Had Trousdale not made the jump to 3A from 1A 3 years ago, there would be more gold balls in the trophy case. Even at that, they still managed to make the semi-finals in 3A in 2001 and 2002 as the smallest school in the division. At some point in time, I would wager that Coach Satterfield will be teeing it up in the college ranks.

Several have mentioned Rankin. No doubt about it, he is a good coach. But he sure did not want to play against Satterfield during his tenure at Smith County. He's not alone in that category though. Many coaches would rater not play Trousdale whatever the classification, because it will be a hard fought contest every time.

it depends on what u mean by "best". If you are talking winning percentage and state titles, it would have to be Tommy Owen, but that was back in the older days. In terms of motivation and teaching guys to become men, it's safe to say that Coach Jeff Rutledge does just that, motivates young men to be better sons, friends, husbands brothers and better men.

    • Why did the coach get rehired after she was let go as an assistant by the former Warren County coach and the current AD?? Is that accurate?? I am very familiar with situations like this. Suprised lawsuits haven't happend before. If the coach unfairly let the player go, I think she has a shot because it cost her a scholarship. No college is going to offer a scholarship to a player that is kicked off of the team. Not going to happen. There are bad hires like this a bunch and kids are treated unfairly by coaches that can't coach a lick and have super long ropes somehow. Amazing how some of these coaches get hired and keep their job.
    • I am going to assume you are not a lawyer, and most reasonable lawyers would not say the lawsuit has a zero percent chance in court. I agree with you that a coach has the ability to dismiss anyone from a team. However, Ms. Winfree was never presented with the opportunity to present her witnesses and have them tell the coaches and administrators what they heard. A lawyer could better explain the lawsuit and the grounds to you. Before you start making wild assumptions about the lawsuit, would it be too much to ask that you do a little legal research first? The lawsuit is dealing with due process, loss of property, and defamation.   You can read the lawsuit here: https://bdnewsletter.files.wordpress.com/2024/04/doc-1-complaint-filed-4-18-2024.pdf
    • The administration took the path of backing the coach and whispering to people that the kid was a problem. The reality is that the kid was never a problem on a team or classroom. The player says she has witnessed who back her not saying the f-word.  Why did the coach make that story up and other stories? I am not Sigmund Freud and do not have an answer for the ex=-coach's behavior..
    • I think they have they coach they want close to being done. I guess we will all see how this plays out. I hope the hire a good one. There are some players in the box for the next coach to work with.
