What are the break-down numbers used to determine football classification? Maryville has 1351 students in 4A and Campbell Co. has 1387, but is in 5A.  Both teams must be on the "bubble".

According to a classification thing on TSSAA it says this:

In Divison 1, schools playing football shall be divided into five classes based on the total number of schools playing football. Therefore, schools are classed as follows:

1A: Schools with an enrollment of 361 and under

2A: Schools with an enrollment of 364 to 673

3A: Schools with an enrollment of 675 to 957

4A: Schools with an enrollment of 961 to 1,347

5A: Schools with an enrollment of 1,348 and above

The thing doesn't really make sense. What if your school has 959 students? I guess they look at the numbers at that point and analyze it to determine what class a certain school belongs in. In some cases, such as Elizabethton, they are allowed to be in 4A even though they don't have enough students due to them being successful in that class.

If 5A is 1,348 and above, why is Maryville still 4A with 1,351 students as reported on CoachT? Maryville vs. Oak Ridge, Kingsport Dobyns Bennett, Soddy Daisy, etc. would be awesome match-ups.

I don't know that one. Maybe they have the same amount of boys that try out for football as the majority of other 4A schools.

The total no.# of schools playing football is divided by five and that usually comes out to be around 57 to 60 teams.  What ever the devisor is they count that many teams and make the Class division.  Sometimes teams with the same number influence the total one way or the other.

possumcop.. Good nickname man! You're right about the division but you have to factor in the teams that decide to "play up".
