Suggestions for wt mgt

This may take a while, but not half the time it takes to enter in the results of a quad-meet on-line. Just some thoughts on implementing the new weight management issues (something that isn't going to go away). Just think if football coaches had to weigh their players on July 25, after a Spring and Summer of lifting weights; I would wager that well over half the players could not keep from losing 1.5% per week of their weight consistently throughout the season. Football players lose more weight than many wrestlers; they don't mean to, but it happens with the grind of the season. One note before the suggestions, weight loss has always been the black-eye of the sport and we are being given a formula to fix the problem. It's a start but it needs some major tweaking. Some suggestions-

1. Check wrestlers weight loss progress ONLY if they change to a lower weight class(this will eliminate the silly concerns we now have about guys who compete in matches with weight-allowances or the guy who is simply a little lighter today). We had a 1 lb allowance Sat.; I had to multiply a wrestler's last weigh-in by .015 and divide that result by 7 and then multiply that by 3, to convey to the boy that he had to be .8 (.834 to exact) over scratch (or less) in order to wrestle Tue. No one should have to do all that if there is no intent to change weight classes. (I bet many hwts lose more than a 1/7 of 1.5% per day and they're not trying to cut any-same analogy used with football).

2. The dead zone (body fat 5-7%) at alpha weigh-in needs to be deleted. Why should a guy with 7.1 % be allowed to drop to a 5% weight, while a wrestler at 6.8% is stuck and PENALIZED to wrestle the weight class immediately above him. EVERYONE should be allowed to appeal to 5%-period.

3. Allow for a SECOND chance alpha date weigh-in, say the 3rd weekend of Dec., for those who want to. When kids weighed in for their alpha date they weren't in any shape yet, but they were weighed in at the wrestler's mode. For many, the season hadn't even started, and now many kids are wrestling way above where they could/should be. They are NOW in wrestling mode. The colleges allow for this-this year Dec 17.

4. Change the 1.5% to 3%. Personally I believe 3% isn't high enough for a well trained athlete.

5. (This isn't going to happen but wouldn't it be great) Fax names, results, and exact weigh-in weights, etc. to the TSSAA and let them put in ALL the data of every match-JV & varsity like we have to do.

Had an interesting conversation with a Ga coach this weekend; he said (don't know if he's right) that Ga wasn't a member of the Nat'l Fed and that they would never go to this weight management requirement. He may be right; they weigh in the morning for dual matches, and sometimes the night before for tournaments (like a Friday night for a two-day tourney).

Karelin, I agree with you suggetions.

I have not heard from 1, not 1, coach who likes this system. I now am beginning to believe, all though Karelin's suggestions are good one's, that the whole thing, well if not the whole thing a good part of it, needs to be scrapped. All it seems to be doing is ticking people off (coaches, wrestlers, trainers, parents)

We wrestled twice last night. After moving the mats, clocks, and tables back to our room, one of my managers and I sat down to type in the results on the NWCA Results page. The time 10:05 PM. By the time we were done, it was 11:05 PM. By the time I got home it was 11:32 PM.

Besides it being a rule, why do we have to type in the results to on the NWCA web site? For what purpose? This is a portion that needs to be cut.

Test a kid. Results show that the lowest weight a kid can go is 130. He weighs 140 at the time of the test. Don't give the kids a general timetable that he has to follow to lose the weight. People are different. Metabolisms are different. TRUST THE COACH/PARENT?ATHLETE.

Is the answer safety or money? I truly want to know.

If you think the whole program should be scrapped, your missing the big picture. I agree that there are some problems with the program, of course, this is its first year. As a coach, I like the idea that kids don't feel like they have to drop two wt classes, because you know they don't or won't drop the weight safely.

You are more likely to be taken seriously if you provide practical suggestions for tweaking the program instead saying "scrap the whole dang thing".

Perhaps you should explain the big picture to those of us who are obviously not seeing it.

By next season, the only impact this program will have is the added paperwork and the associated BS. Wrestlers will be at the weights they want to be. They'll just have to do it on their own and get there a little earlier.

When you are describing the big picture to us, be sure and provide us with evidence of these programs being safer.

As I stated, a part, or good portion of the program needs to be scrapped.

Why do our results have to be typed in after all contests? Why? Give me an answer other than, "its the rule!"

TRUST THE COACHES/PARENTS/DOCTORS/WRESTLERS to do what is on the best interest of the athlete.

cchulk, heck somebody, enlighten those of us who can't see the Big Picture. Don't forget the $.

Sure the paperwork is a hassle, but this whole thing is easier for me. No more guessing games about where a kid should wrestle, just step on the scale and there you go. I do think that there are some problems with the descent - like getting 2 pounds on Saturday and violating your descent for Tuesday. But that's what the program is for, to keep people from dropping weight too quickly. I like it that I don't have guys cutting more than 2 or 3 pounds after Thanksgiving because they are closer to their natural weight. Most of our wrestlers are close to weight after a good 1.5 hour practice, that's a real stress buster in itself.

One of you just said, kids will start losing weight earlier. Good. You all know people who used to lose 6 pounds in one day or 12 pounds in two days- yeah thats safe. The program has eliminated that. You cant do it before fat testing either cause you won't pass hydration. This program stops a lot of people from doing a lot(not all) of the stupid things I did as a wrestler. It's not perfect but it is a start towards improving the reputation of the sport.

Please don't project YOUR stupidity onto others! I personally believe that the coaches in our area do a wonderful job teaching and coaching nutrition and weight management, and have done so for years. I trust the judgement of these coaches above and beyond anything a computer can spit out. The program is so broad and general there is no way it can be truly accurate for each wrestler. However, a good coach knows his kids and their limits. How can stepping on a scale truly project a person's bofy fat percentage? It can't! I think Karelin is on the mark.

    • I've always been a football fan first and then if you have a band that's awesome. No question that DB has one of the best bands in the country and the whole region should attend at least one DB game just to see their band. I don't know if Nick Saban could come to Kingsport and build a football program that could match the Dobyns Bennett band's success. That said,as mentioned before, a couple of things would have to change in order for the Tribe to just win a state championship on the field.Besides a program that starts from the peewee teams and goes all the way to J Fred with all coaches and weight training { in time }on the same page. Sometimes it also takes a little luck like the 1998 Vols .There are a lot of great athletes at a lot of big schools around the state and just because you want something doesn't mean your going to build a program like Alcoa has. Yes,start at the bottom and have guys that are quality coaches teaching at every level is 100% the first step. Parents can make it a lot easier by getting their young athletes into an early start with conditioning and weights as well when they are old enough to lift.If your son is a man in the weight room before he gets to DB , then it won't take a "Dobbs" coach to make him competitive against other schools athletes when it comes to strength.

    • A complete cultural change happened at Greeneville and the administration and community opened up their checkbooks.  What a lot of people don't know is Ballard was Zeller's OC for many years and stopped coaching for two years because Zeller and Ballard didn't see eye to eye on some things.  Zeller lead Greeneville to it's first ever Semi Final appearance in 2000 and lost 28-12 at Maryville and had them in the Quarter Finals in 2002 and 2003.  Z was a great coach but lost some control when it came to making workouts mandatory. (He learned from that Mistake and it was at LC when i coached with him.).  Z was let go going into my Senior Year and was replaced by Steve McCurry who was the one that turned the program around.  Steve had won a 4a state championship at AC Reynolds in Asheville and made the administration completely redo the weight room with new equipment, had a football period at the end of the school day to lift, started devil camp, and brought in coaches like Danny Bentley (Still the OL coach), Ballard as the OC, Cody Baugh (QB coach and still there), and even Spradlen who is Greeneville's head coach now as the DB's Coach.  McCurry only coached for two seasons at Greeneville and took a team that had a losing record the year before and finished my Senior Year making it to the Quarters and having a 10-3 record and then followed it up with a Semi Final appearance the next year with an 11-3 record and back to back conference championships.  Loved McCurry to death but the recession hit and the story i heard was he was still buying new equipment for the team that the Principal didn't authorize and his response was "I don't answer to you and only to Niswonger and Bewley" (Two huge donors).  That was it for him and they Promoted Ballard shortly after that.   Greeneville had always been relevant ever since the the late 70's under Coach Fred Sorrell's.  Since Sorrell's took over in 1977 Greeneville overall winning percentage is over 76%.  The biggest reason people might not have thought Greeneville was "Good" until Ballard was Greeneville always played up Classification wise and could never get over the hump. (When there were 3 classifications we played 3a, when it went to 5 we played 4a).  Greeneville is the largest its ever been with 953 students and where playing teams 2 or 3 times there size back in the day (I had a little over 800 kids in the school when i graduated in 2008).  Other teams always would know they would be sore after a game but depth took over and never won a Championship until Greeneville played in the classification the TSSAA actually assigned them. You had names like Dustin Moore (1993 Mr Football for 3a and who Phillip Fulmer said was one of the greatest athletes he ever recruited), James "Mud Turtle" Mayes, Brigham Lyons, Byron Gillespie, Frankie Debusk (National Champion Qb at Furman with GQ), Jasmine Lowery, Cody Baugh, The Greenway Brothers, Joe Watson (Furman), etc.  Now the cultural is from the Pee Wee league up and you grow up as a young kid wanting to wear the Greene and White.  Here is a really good link when it comes to anything Greeneville Football related. https://greenevillefootball.com/   I also don't coach anymore.  Z told me i was to smart with how the school systems are ran these days and ended up going into real estate in Knoxville which has been a great decision for my life.
    • Yes, they will. I'm wondering what kinds of strides Sale Creek will make heading into the second season under Coach Fitz.
    • No yellow stripes on the rug last night. Biggest crowd I’ve seen at 825 since the alco debacle.
