When Carthage got their own field helped both programs tremendously, it allowed for more practice and it also let junior high programs arise. Before that you could go multiple weeks during the season without getting on the field to practice. 4 classes and the removal of the private schools helped out as well, but both programs made multiple state tournaments under the old system. Carthage use to have Upperman, Dekalb, Livingston, Macon, and Cannon in their district. Gordonsville had Friendship, Goodpasture, Watertown, Trousdale, and Westmoreland. So the paths have become easier. There has also been a commitment from administration and coaches to develop programs and not just teams that were something to do in the spring.
