  1. It's great that everyone has been able to get this far. DJ and I were talking last week how based on the forecast 8-AAA may not be finished by the deadline. I like the two site bracket, that's something that should be considered every year. Good luck to Coffee and whom ever wins between Lincoln & Lawrence.
  2. Good post. Last year was nuts. Just wanted to say I'm missing all of y'all. Not missing what you do, just the people involved and the game itself.
  3. So no pictures of my fantastic plate work? /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
  4. He was a bit animated, but he didn't scream.
  5. I can assure you he was there. Coach Hardison did scream at the umpires. I heard him. And screaming at the umpires is going ballistic in my book. Also, Parker went out and argued once, not three times.
  6. The reason the run didn't count in the second instance is because no run can be scored during the same continuous playing action as a force out for the third out, even if a runner reaches home plate before the third out is recorded. In other words, force outs count before runs are scored. It is common that a runner reaches home plate before the third out is made by force out. Such a case is routine; the runner doesn't score but is counted as left on base. The double play that was turned was no different than if it had been a groundball for a double play.
  7. Not when neither runner moved.
  8. The key phrase is "ordinary effort."
  9. LC 13 FC 3 No idea on the current games.

    umps?

I think that one gets funnier everytime I hear it.
  11. I've gotta disagree. In my opinion, trying to call different levels will actually screw an umpire up. Back when I was trying to do Little League and high school, I found that my strike zone was a little screwy, especially if I did a high school game one night and LL the next. Maybe that's just me. By the time the LL season starts high school season has been going for over a month and some of us just don't want to deal with LL parents and coaches if we don't have to. Saying all that, I do think LL is the place for a new guy to start.
  12. You can take the certification test anytime, just send in your money and you'll get the books and test back to take. Honestly, anyone can get certified, but a good association leader won't throw you to he wolves your first time out. As for training, TSSAA holds a camp every January. If you really want to start, get with your local association and do some summer ball. You don't have to be certified and there is less pressure on a rookie umpire.
  13. Hey Binns, surgery is tommorrow. I figure by Wed Ill be good to go if you want to do a 6-man, I'll take RF, just don't expect much movement on my part.
  14. Someone correct me if Im worng, but being called out for "slinging the bat" is not in the rulebook. Bad call in my mind. The only that could possibly be considered illegal is if a runner was stealing a base and on the follow-through the batter slung the bat into the catcher or something along that line, then you do have interference. But in the case mentioned, I've got nothing but a base hit and a run scored.
  15. No, never ever do a make up call. Using the old saying, 2 wrongs don't make a right. Honestly, there may be games where it looks like we do. I for one have had games where I'm stuck in some sort of "let's blow multiple calls" rut and it may be one call goes for each side, but I assure it's not on purpose. It's because I just royally stink that night. Yeah, hard to believe, but it happens.
  16. Tullahoma guys miss one? No way! I for one have never missed a call in a big game.
  17. If you want best combo announcer/bookkeeper, gotta go with Mr. Larry Boyles at Shelbyville. The man does it with a passion. I remember when he did Little League and would make up nicknames for the kids and out-of-town scores, much fun was had by all.

    UMPS

Honestly I think it all depends on the coach and how he is prone to act. If he is known as a whiner or a complainer, most umpires, especially veterans, won't put up with much. Then there are the coaches that when they come out you know that it is probably something legitimate and a good umpire will listen without taking offense. Then there are the coaches that would come out and argue with God himself. The coach would probably hit him with his cap bill in the nose and bump him with his stomach. As for myself, I will usually admit to blowing a call. For example, in a game last year due to a misscommunication with my partner I made a call I shouldn't have. The coach came out and I let him know that I had screwed up but wouldn't change the call. I even told to chew my butt for a bit if he wanted to, he didn't. There are definately coaches out there that we respect a great deal more and give more leeway to in terms of arguments and he is one of them for me. You may think that wrong, but rookie coaches need to earn our respect by treating us with respect. On that note, I never admit to blowing a call to a rookie coach. Sorry so long, but with me riding the umpire pine due to this stupid torn ACL, I'm having withdrawal.
  19. Because umpires' eyes are such highly-tuned mechanisms that we can determine within a nano-second what got there first, the runner or the ball. You as a fan, your eyes aren't that highly-tuned so you see it totally differently.
  20. Wrong Jody. I'm smaller and better looking. I tore my ACL snow skiing, now can you imagine the other Jody on skis? Only kidding, don't kill me J.H.!
  21. Cub, didn't realize you didn't know about the knee. I should have called you, sorry about that. Our buddy in Kentucky is coming back this summer, at least he was the last time I talked to him. I'll be home during May recouping from surgery, gotta let mom take care of me. Im hoping to get to some games and see everyone. Riddler, we handle most of 11A (Moore Co., Huntland, etc.), 8AAA except for Columbia and Lawrence Co, and then Warren Co. Also provide for the middle schools.
  22. Central TN Baseball Umpires Association and yeah Binns is our illustrious leader. I feel that our association has some of the best umpires in the state. As matter of fact I think I'm the best umpire in the state that is missing the season due to a torn ACL. For those that know who I am, yes, not getting to umpire is killing me!!! Surgery is scheduled for May 5.
  23. Ted has no say in the matter. He isn't an owner any more. The Braves are owned by AOL/Time Warner. Anyways, I wouldn't care if a team moved in across the street, I'd still root for my beloved Braves.
