  1. Now that RBS, Unicoi County, and Montgomery Central have all snapped their multiyear losing streaks, what team now has the longest losing streak?
  2. Anyone heard a Brentwood-Dickson Co. Score?
  3. I am again looking for nominations for our TN Radio Network Student-Athlete of the Week. The requirements are that the student needs to be actively involved in a fall sport AND the student needs to be a top performer in the classroom. If you know of anyone who fits this bill please PM me. Several of you sent some great nominations to me a year ago, and I TRULY appreciate it. Thanks! Brant
  4. Over the years I held a TV camera shooting at games from every level from 5-year old kids playing t-ball to having my own personal on the sideline footage of the Music City Miracle at the then Coliseum in Nashville. As Del said, most refs at all levels have a mutual respect for the cameramen/women, but the problems (Neyland Stadium comes to mind) happen when those who aren't on the sideline in a WORKING capacity are allowed in the area. I distinctly remember working a UT-UK football game in 1998 (John Ward's final game at Neyland and the last regular season game before the national championship) where I was unable to make it through a wall of hangers-on to get to a spot to get video of the game. At the time I was assigned to go from end zone to end zone to get the best angles of both teams. I eventually gave up and stayed in one place (which wasn't hard given UT's dominance that day). As far as the new 6-foot rule goes I completely agree that it's a right move. As with all rules involving PRIVILEGES and not rights, if you don't like the rule, you can choose to not participate in the activity that has the rules. This is also known as the "My Yard, My Ball, My Rules" clause of the unofficial constitution of sports.
  5. Del, My wife and I have lived in the Crieve Hall area for the last six years and we LOVE it. We are 5 minutes from Brentwood, 11 minutes from Cool Springs Galleria, and about 15 minutes from Green Hills and Downtown. It is a neighborhood developed in the '50s and '60s with typical ranch homes of that era. In addition most of the lots have mature trees, and the prices are better than you'll find in Green Hills/Franklin area. On the schools, 2 of Metro's best elementary schools are in the area (Crieve Hall & Granberry), but beyond that the schools get a bit shakier (McMurray Middle/Overton High).
  6. WBCR wants 10 bucks to listen to an internet stream that has been free for the first 12 weeks of the season. For the first time this season I will not have Maryville highlights on my show. On their website they're saying that they're trying to prove to the TSSAA that they should've been allowed to do a PPV video stream and that people are willing to pay to listen to their games. This is greed, plain and simple. I know it costs a lot of money to stream... but this isn't the way to get the TSSAA on your side. I wish the Rebels best of luck the rest of the way, but I wouldn't pay 10 bucks to listen to ANY HS game. In addition, I hope there were no Maryville alumni planning on listening to the game while they serve the U-S in the Middle East.
  7. This game replaces the KY-TN series that used to be played in the Summer. With so many top prospects enrolling in summer school following their senior year many of the Mr. Football winners and finalists weren't taking part in the game against the Bluegrass because they were already in college. This will allow them to take part along with the state's other top players.
  8. Del, I'm mentioning this on my show tonight. Thanks for the info... and consider this another bump.
  9. Invisibility cloaks are widely available at most major discount scores. The employees hide behind them every time you need to ask somebody a question.
  10. There is only rule: NEVER talk about Pot Club.
  11. The wife's a math tutor... I WON'T be showing her this article.
  12. My brain's hurting thinking that hard about itself!
  13. On my prep football shows with the TN Radio Network I now have a sponsored segment where I will be honoring a student-athlete of the week. Do you know of anyone at the schools you cover, work at, attend, or follow that deserves such an honor? Here are the parameters: 1. The student should be in a fall sport. 2. The student should play a significant role on his/her team. They don't have to be the stars, but they do need to be more than a benchwarmer. 3. The student should also be a positive role model and obviously have good grades. There are no trophies or monetary gifts involved (for either the honoree or the nominating party) but it could be listed on a college application as a statewide honor. If you know of anybody who fills this role, please let me know. You can send me a pm or you can also email me at [email protected] if that's easier for you. I appreciate the help. I know that when I was in HS back in the dark ages of the 20th century players who were more student than athlete often didn't get any recognition. I also know that here on the plus board I'll get legitimate nominations and not tons of trash talk that turns into another off-topic discussion. Thanks
  14. A couple of other classics of this type from Mr. Sledge-O-Matic himself, Gallagher: Why do they call them buildings when they're already built? Why do they call them apartments when they're all together? Another classic: Why is it called a foul line in baseball when if a ball hits the line, it's fair?
  15. Those of us who are hockey fans can answer the question. Life would go on without football, as it did for most of human history. When the NHL locked out a few years back, I spent more time watching other types of programming. Of course, I didn't get desperate enough to watch the NBA!
  16. I said I was back... and then I immediately got slammed by having to reschedule an ACT prep class, moving it a week ahead, and therefore requiring my wife and me to have to consolidate two weeks worth of preparation into a few days. Needless to say, with the football season a week away from officially starting, it's quite stressful. Congrats to the new grandmothers AND to those moderators who were able to eliminate some less than law-abiding citizens. In the meantime, I'm going back to watching Hurricane Dean satellite loops on the WX Channel... that's more exciting than the Titans preseason games!
  17. Hey everybody! After about a 6 month sabbatical from coachT I'll finally have a legitimate reason to again spend time here. The tutoring business is going gangbusters, and with my wife as my co-worker (OK, boss) it is a wonderful experience. Even though I left radio full time last September I'm still going to be hosting the hosting the Friday Night Finals football show on Tennessee Radio Network plus doing work for Sirius NFL Network for the Titans (by the way, I'm writing this in the Titans press box trying to stay awake during this thrilling matchup with the Redskins). For the regulars, is there any MAJOR news (personal or otherwise) that I have missed and need to know about? My life has been relatively calm with no major issues (unless you count my dad's shoulder and knee replacement surgeries, but those and the recoveries have been routine). I have missed hanging out here. When I was working in radio it seemed that I always had at least an hour a day to meander through the boards here, but since the start of the calendar year the students have been steady (along with the pay), and when I'm not seeing a student, well, let's say there are two lists: the first is the office to-do list (filing, updating records, tallying weekly receipts, etc.) and the second is the ever-increasing "honey-do" list. When you work from home with your spouse, THAT list is always close at hand :') I hope everyone's staying cool, and I also hope that y'all aren't losing as many plants as I have in the past two weeks (rhodys don't like 104 degree weather). Brant
  18. There's still a sports show on 1510 am from 5 until 8 at night. Duncan Stewart, Conn Hamlett, and Brent Dougherty are the co-hosts and they replaced Bob Bell about 2 years ago. I acknowledge that they're former co-workers of mine... but I think if you give them a chance you'll find they're more entertaining than anyone else on the Nashville airwaves. Since I have friends throughout the Nashville media I will withhold my opinions on the rest of this painfully oversaturated sports talk market. I will say there are several fine talents... and others who leave something to be desired.
  19. T-V Game broadcasts are an expensive undertaking. Division II games, while important to the fans, don't have the drawing appeal of the D-I games. In addition, nobody is going to watch a game between two private schools when you have VU-UT, Michigan/Ohio State, and a dozen or so other games are on at the same time. The D-I games compete against some conference championship games but the schedule is more open on that weekend other than those games. I have been to both the DII Clinic Bowl (back at Vandy) as well as several BCBS Bowls in the 'Boro. The crowds are MUCH larger for the public schools (even in the smaller classes). CBQ, it isn't discrimination. If the TSSAA could make money doing the DII broadcasts I'm sure they would. While BA and Mccallie have some money, I doubt that the other schools have thousands to throw at a t-v broadcast that VERY few people would actually watch.
  20. I think what you saw was the exception and rather than the rule. I covered KY HS football for 6 years in the media and followed it for 18 more before that as a kid growing up in Western KY. I think the bad blood like you describe can happen in TN as well. There are some programs in KY that have top-notch facilities where the field's still in great shape in November. In fact in Hopkinsville they have a two-team stadium built in 1991 that is nicer than most small-college digs across the country. Their field is bermuda which goes dormant in November but it is still a very playable surface. Most KY football games are like the ones here in Tennessee in that they're hard-fought events between two teams with good sportsmanship.
  21. Bledsoe, Good to see another U-K fan on here!
  22. Siegel, you have my sympathy for your peanut allergy. I am EXTREMELY allergic to pecans/walnuts/cashews but not peanuts (since they're legumes instead of tree nuts). I had been allergic to cats growing up but thankfully when I started dating my now wife I had outgrown it somewhere in my mid '20s. In fact she tells the story of how she cleaned her apartment more than she had in YEARS when I was coming over to pick her up for our first date (as I had mentioned my history of allergies to her in a conversation). I am SO lucky that I wasn't allergic to Reesie (as well as my older daughter Patches). My wife jokes had it come down to a decision between me and the two kitties (due to allergies), she would've wished me a nice life!
  23. This is a great country because I can sit here on my couch... with my widescreen laptop... and my high speed wi-fi connection... listening to Paul McCartney on a C-D... because I can't find anything interesting on my 75-channel Cable TV... with my adorable feline daughter Reesie curled up next to me napping... I got to play a direct role in our form of government this week by pushing areas on a high-tech touch-screen voting machine... knowing my wife's going to be done with work in the next room in an hour and we'll have full plates for supper... and our work has allowed us to become debt-free except for the house... and that I get to work from home but still get to do weekly interviews with some of the greatest athletes in the world... and that now Reesie's giving herself a bath after a LONG nap... What was it I was complaining about earlier?
  24. I hope, like Del, titans89, texas, vg, and others that the new Democratic Congress will continue to increase funding for the military. I think we all get hung up on the War on Terror and it's easy to forget that we need a strong military not only to spread democracy but also to protect what we have here.... and to be strong enough so that no two-bit dictator (Kim Jung Il, etc.) thinks they have a snowball's chance in the Underworld of beating us. I grew up 20 miles from Fort Campbell and was on post on a regular basis for various sporting events. Military life is one of honorable service with no real material thanks for it. I also hope that they'll boost funding for V-A Hospitals so that those who don't come back whole (as well as those who served in previous wars) get the same quality care that any civilian could get at a top hospital. My real fear in Iraq is that it isn't going to matter how many more years we spend there. The factions there have hated each other for HUNDREDS of years and only coexisted under an iron fisted dictator. I would like to think that democracy would work there given enough time... but it wouldn't take long once we're out of the area for stuff to get stirred up again. To anyone on here who has served in any military branch, in war or peacetime, thank you. I still get choked up thinking about the Superbowl ad from a couple of years ago that showed soldiers walking through an airport and getting a standing ovation. I fly my American flag in front of my home daily because the U-S IS the best place in the world to live. BTW, that Japanese soldier was holding out until they started selling Sun Drop on that island
