  1. Cade Thompson QB Ut martin, Brent Burnett QB MTSU, Aaron Douglas TE/OL UT, Tyler Maples WR Ut then Furman, Jeff Smith DE Tenn Tech, Tank Baker RB originally at Furman, theres a few more I could think of but I believe its been longer than 6 years ago... (carl Stewart, Nick Black, ect.)
  2. I wasn't comparing Region 3-4A to Region 2-5A, and obiously since you have spent the last however many years in ootlewah threads you wouldn't know how tough region 3-4a is. But since your gonna compare ill say this... Region 3-4A may not have had the depth that 2-5A had, but the top 4 teams from on any given year in 3-4a could have without a doubt competed with 2-5a. Central would have at least 2, maybe more state chapionships in my opinion if it wernt for Maryville getting by them in RD 3 every year. I feel like we have had this thread over 100 times now, and don't want to start this on the game thread... but if you are insinuating that 3-4a wasn't tough because there were usually two bad teams in the region, then your probably right.
  3. This game is very interesting to me because Maryville it seems has always played a certain team twice in a year. Mainly because, whether people want to admit it or not, region 3-4A of the old was a very tough region (central, powell, halls, west etc). In the George Quarles Era, Maryville has played 13 teams twice in a season... once in the regular season and once in the playoffs. In the Regular Season of those games GQ is 11-2 with the losses coming from Halls in 2000 and Morristown West in 2001. In the Playoff rematches of those games GQ is 11-2 with losses coming from Central in 1999, and Morristown West in 2003. Its very obvious that Maryville is very tough to play twice in one year, and since 2003, Maryville has not lost to a team they play twice in one year. That being said, Mcminn has not lost since they last played Maryville, and are riding a nice little 8 game win streak themselves. They obviously must be confident in there play now, which is a MANDATORY REQUIREMENT if you are going to beat the Rebels at Skeeter. Any doubt in your mind, and you'll get left in the dust. My game preview goes as follows: I really think that this will be much closer than the last matchup. Simply because of the experience Mcminn gained from playing at Maryville earlier in the year. Maryville in very recent years has played lesser opponents in the first and second Rds of the playoffs very close due to turnovers and an overall sloppy game (Knox West 2007, Brainerd 2006, Powell 2004). Alot of that sloppy play had to do with the other team coming out fired up and causing Maryville to make mistakes. I think that Mcminn is going to come out of the gates playing on sheer emotion and adrenalin, just like many teams do when they play a team of Maryville's caliber. I think we might see Mcminn even score first. However, when its all said and done, it will come down to the play of the quarterbacks. Mcminn fans may not like this very much, but IN MY OPINION Phillip Juhlin is the better quarterback in this game (not a very sound claim though because I have only seen albes play once and read his stats for the rest of the games). The rebels go as #15 goes, and #15 is coached by the best QB coach in the state. On the flip side, Cy Ables is just that, very ABLE. However, Maryville's strength on defense is without a doubt its secondary. I think Maryville plays their bend but don't break defense and forces ables to make a few mistakes in the second half of the ball game. If Phillip Juhlin plays well, Maryville overcomes the early adrenalin rush of Mcminn and out plays them in the 2nd half to go on to win.... but closer than last time. At the half: Maryville 14 Mcminn 7 Final score: Maryville 27 Mcminn 14
  4. Who can we expect to be healthier? Macmen was a long time ago, I hardly remember specific players (no disrespect). No disrespect taken.. we had three offensive linemen and two defensive lineman that did not play for various reasons. Also Drew Massingale who scored the winning touchdown to beat Ooltewah was injured against Maryville in the first half.... Maryville has most polished team and coaching staff in this state and no doubt they will be prepared. Mcminn has not lost since Maryville beat them and they have A LOT of confidence in that program right now. Im not sure about predicting an upset this early in the week but definitely should be a competitive game. I was one of the many Mcminn fans that criticized Bo for blatantly calling Quarles to schedule this game(first coach to do this in 5 YEARS!!! ) but it actually turned out to be good coaching. There is not better environment to prepare kids for than Maryville stadium on a friday night. After playing the most dominant program in the state at home this team gained experience and that should help them the second time around. This should be as interesting a game as I have seen all year. Cant wait for the drive to Blount CO friday... GO TRIBE!!!!!!!! You are exactly right my friend. Great call by Mcminn's coach to want to come play Maryville. Now it could reward them when it really matters. Alot of kids seem to experience a bit of culture shock when they first play at Shields Stadium. Its just the way the Rebels go about their business, never get too hyped, and go to work. But Mcminn should be able to use their experience and thrive off of the energy next weekend. No doubt about it these are two teams that are way better than the first meeting.... but I also think this game will be much more competitive. Prediction later in the week...
  5. Well after being at the game last night, all I have to say is that Maryville WILL NOT be able to compete with the 7-A boys.... thats right, once they come play with the big boys in 7-A ball they wont roll through their district anymore.
  6. That was a good game but the bottom line was Powell wanted it more. As great a game it was, I literally almost left because of the the PA announcer turned play by play analyst. First of all it was ridiculously loud and secondly he was making an idiot out of himself. I was embarassed for him.
  7. Qb Phillip Eulene over 100 yards rushing in the first quarter. At the half MHS-31 PHS-0
  8. Maryville wins but closer than most people think... prediction later
  9. Wow, we truly are blessed to get see football of that intensity and with emotions running so high at the high school level. These two teams always bring the best out of eachother and tonight was no different. Now to my thoughts on the actual game... First of all Tyler Robinson is legit D-1 in my mind... he was wide open the first two catches, then had two in his face on another one handed grab... and when he gets you in his arms at DE your going straight to the ground, I knew he was good but was very impressed with his presence tonight. Alcoa took the momentum early with that first drive but the Rebels answered with a score of their own and two more field goals before the half. Chase James played a good ballgame tonight too, he made some key throws on 3rd down for alcoa to keep drives alive, not bad on his feet either. One thing I think that hurt Alcoa tonight was why in the heck did Thompson not get more touches? If im coaching them he touching the football or getting thrown too at least once a series. Alcoa played and great game and have nothing to be ashamed of. Now as for the Rebels...George Quarles is such an amazing head coach its not even funny. I hate to say he outcoached Rankin because Gary is a great one as well, but GQ knows what his offense is capable of doing and they executed his gameplan very well. This was Phillip Eulene 's coming out party, it was sooo good to see him play well. He read the option great tonight and made enough plays to help them win the game. Chris Jordan just like Sam Thompson needs to be getting more looks. Buddy Jones had one heck of a ball game and Shuler got some tough yards as well. DT #69 Nunns I believe is his name played outstanding, he had James on the move all night long and Smith always steps it up in the big games. All in all a great win and one of the best high school games Ive seen in a while. Congrats to both teams and will be looking for two more gold balls back to East Tennessee.... 62 in a row, Way to go Rebels
  10. For anyone new to the Alcoa Maryville rivalry and anyone who has no dog in the fight and just wants to see some good football, My suggestion to you is to get there as early as possible to soak in the pregame activites and watch the teams warm ups and the student sections go back and forth. Watch the fans roar when their respective teams run out and when the coaches meet and talk at midfield. Watch the Maryville drumline warm up in the endzone closest to the weightroom. Watch Alcoa go through its "Too Hype" chant before warmups. Watch Maryville counter with its Iron Cross warmup drill. This is hands down the greatest rivalry in Tennessee and you would be selling yourself short if you dont go out of your way to get there early and see all you can. This is an experience everyone should have in a lifetime. And the kids out there playing tonight will not totally understand how lucky they are to be playing in this type of atmosphere until thier careers are over. Emotions are sky high, and the intensity is even higher. Not to mention this game might be one of the best ever. Hope everyone stays safe tonight, players and fans. Go Rebels!
  11. I think both team will score between the low single digits to the high 50s and I feel the team that scores the most will probably win. /rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> MHS 42 AHS 21
  12. 2000 was the last year alcoa beat maryville... so that makes it 7 in a row i believe, could be wrong
  13. Nothing like reading and Alcoa Maryville thread the week leading up to the game... wow we are both sooo spoiled.
  14. Haha Bldrunner your hilarious... but seriosly, they're better then Elvis.
  15. Haha Bldrunner you hilarious.... but seriously, look for another repeat. /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />
  16. Well I do know MHS scored on the first possession but the ref blew the whistle bc he thought the dive back had the football and the pitch back was rolling into the endzone... so they put the ball back on the 3 and MHS fumbled... that would have made it 2-0
  17. First of all, Maryville is always vulnerable... Second of all, those no name Maryville players form the Alcoa game, made names for themselves that year, "the year they weren't supposed to win it all." Thirdly, Halls will be very good this year, I expect to see a Halls MHS matchup twice this year. And will definately make both games if it holds true.
  18. Alcoa has lost a couple of good ones in the past to WB ... If I can remember correct, Bart Hicks transfered to WB (only to go back), and Mohammed Baskin switched teams and had a really good career for the govs. Seems like Ronald Osbourne was at Alcoa too before he played for the Govs (I could be wrong there). Anyone else Im forgetting??? Or anyone gone the opposite way?
  19. I absolutely hate the wing T, but I love watching Kitts run in it. Good luck this year Halls.
  20. Very Very tough question to answer... If you count the past 10 years... I would guess that Maryville would have the most, maybe 3 or 4. You also have to throw the perrenial powers in there like Riverdale, MBA, BA etc. Still a very hard one to guess at. You just never know. As for this year, I need to see the all the teams playing at the boro to make the decision.
  21. That was one of the hardest hits I have ever seen. Prince even came out of the game for a play after that hit. Byrnes put on an air display that game, it was very fun to watch.
  22. J&J just because DB is the state all time winningest football program does not mean that they are the best team in the state every year. Yes that does sound good to say you are playing a team with that tradition, but it also sounds good to say that MHS plays the 2A state champs of the past four years. You can say, well they are 2A... but having seen both Alcoa and DB play the past 10 years, I can tell you Alcoa would be winning the series between the two (sorry DB fans), and also dominating a non existant series over WB. So talk as if its all great to drop a little 2A team but truthfully you were dropping the better team of the era... and saving embarassment. As for the MHS MBA game, I don't care until the teams have eachother on the schedule. It would be a great series over the past 10 years....great.
  23. sure does, but they truly are small
  24. He is still at Maryville because he loves the city of Maryville...or at least that is what is seems. He has a boy of 2, a brand new house, and just became the athletic director. As far as the college level goes, there is so much more going on at a college level. X's and O's wise he is already at a college level, but I presume he enjoys coaching high school football, and there is nothing like high school football. So why not do what makes you happy... And yes he would be a successful coach in NET... "He will take his and beat yours, and he could take yours and beat his."
